I am Jeff and I create Aquarium Art.
Forest Aquascape in This Complete Visual Step-By-Step Guide
Watch an aquascape be created while looking over my shoulder the entire way. This film shows everything from the inspiration trip, the collection of hardscape, the build and planting, and the final results. Curious? Enjoy this film showcasing one of the greatest and fastest-growing hobbies in the world.
Over the past ten years, I’ve guided countless hobbyists in mastering the art and techniques of aquascaping. I have always wanted to make this film to serve as a starting resource for them to accelerate the learning curve. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and a film is a thousand pictures making this film a way to share a lifetime's work in under 15 minutes without saying a single word.
This project demonstrates the making of a forest aquascape in an aquarium from beginning to end. The aquarium used in this film is 243 liters (65 gallons) and measures 120x45x45cm (48"x18"x18"). I collected the stones and wood in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the rest of the materials were from the listed product sponsors. If you have any questions about the art or techniques of aquascaping or the equipment I like to run to make these projects successful, drop a comment and I'll answer.

Tiny Waterfall Aquarium for Bookshelf
มุมมอง 3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Project Description : This project is about making a mini paludarium style garden for a bookshelf. It uses a shallow aquarium and contains a self-watering system for the moss and plants. The concept was to create a fantasy scenery on a smaller scale that would add living plants to a bookshelf and keep it low maintenance. The main material elements used for this project are seiryu stone, moss, m...

Aquarium Moss Farming | Easy Mode
มุมมอง 11K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a quick film showing how I used a spare aquarium to grow out moss over 125 days doing nothing after setting it up. Always have clean moss on hand or sell it. It's always in demand.
Well done, beatiful indeed! What ar e the fish? I think I have seen a similar Rasbora but wasn't as red as these ones
Thanks! The fish are Trigonostigma Espei (lambchop rasbora) and the intense color is displayed when they are in breeding condition. Which these fish have been doing for the last two years. I don't like to do favorites but dang these fish are my favorites. They are so colorful, active and fun to watch. Watching them feed is really fun as well as they are fast and aggressive. I have to remove the shrimp for their eggs to survive and when I do fry start showing up frequently. Hope that helps!
Beautiful! Didn't you have Algae issues? If yes, how did you get rid of them?
Thank you! Algae is always there but I focus on growing plants and not fighting algae. I find that as long as the plants are thriving algae doesn't. You can see some bba/staghorn on the wood if you look at the close ups. When on the wood or stone, I either use a scraper and then siphon it out or spot dose it with 3% hydrogen peroxide using a pipette while the pumps are off. Let it sit for a few minutes and then turn the pumps back on. This is lethal for bba/staghorn but doesnt harm the fish or plants. Hope that helps!
Such a beautiful work. Thank you for inspiring us to do something!
You are so welcome! I'm happy that you found it inspiring!
Beatiful video and Tank ❤
Thank you very much! I appreciate the feedback.
❤ you are my man 🙂
Thanks! 😊
Nicely put together video and great to see the direct inspiration connection with nature.
Glad you enjoyed it! It is pretty cool.
Bravo! The show was really informative, colorful and artistically edited. Also, your new formatting style is fresh.
Glad you enjoyed it! more to come.😊
How long did it take you from start to finish?
Right around 7 months from hardscape to final results. Thanks!
I believe I have that same REI bag!
Yea! I love it. It works well but what it represents is everything.
Loved this layout. I’m sure it was a pleasure to view in person.
It was! it had a peaceful zen feeling and the fish loved it darting around the maze of wood.
❤😊🎉
Thanks!
where do you purchase your vertical driftwood from?
I collected it in the California mountains. It was a Chamise bush that had been dug up and left to rot on the side of the road. This is common in the area to create fire breaks.
Very beautiful pieces of stone. Where/how would someone source the stone?
I collected it so if you are in California go for it. If not try Tom Barr.
ah yes, another beautiful scape by jeff that wont be seen by anyone because the algorithm would rather promote bettas in 1 gallons, crypto scams, and let's plays of 10 year old video games for children.
😒 algorithm is brutal. Thanks for the support and being upset on my behalf. Would i like to reach a bigger audience….heck yea. Will i stop making videos…nope.
@@jmaquascaping the absolute irony being im pretty sure i saw you scape at a fish store on someone elses channel and that video with you in it got them more views than their standard videos or any of yours. im glad you show off your work man, you're great.
Awesome 🤙🏼
Thanks! 😁
Love the new format Jeff! Amazing forest scape! Thank you!
Awesome, thank you! Appreciate it bud.
This new style of video is awesome. Keep up the great work :)
I appreciate the support! I will do my best. Filming right now in fact.
Very nice. Got yourself a pretty good haul there.
Yes I did. Tom Barr was an excellent host. We went to so many places, the hikes, jumping off waterfalls and collecting hardscape!
Very nice, got yourself a pretty good haul there.
Thanks, Yea I ended up with an entire pallet of wood and stone. Some of the best stone I've ever used. And the first time Ive had enough straight pieces to mimic trees.
Thank you for watching! This layout is special to me. This trip I was inspired by the majestic Muir Woods, collected the stone and wood from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and bred and raised the fish. I know it is a very short film and if you have any questions I am happy to help. I'd love to hear from you so just drop a comment even if it is just a quick hello! Thanks again.
I often try to replicate a scape I have seen but never really achieve my goal. Using the photo and dry erase markers is pure genius. Nice work!
Thanks! You can do it! It helps to understand the scale and perspective. Even after all this time I need the assist when creating something complex.
wow amazing video, really enjoy the proces, and beautiful layout of course
Thank you so much 😀! Keeps me going.
Jeff teach me how to do a thumbnail like that! Delicious!❤
Oh Thanks! I put a lot of effort into them. I use multiple pictures and edit them in Lightroom and then bring them together in ProCreate on iPad. I love that app!
@@jmaquascaping thanks for answer. But the truth is your video itself is even more captivating, i fell like i will rewatch it many times, will try to apply the thumbnail method in future. The angle of the picture must be the same or LR can corect it? I'm so noob at that...
Just similar angles and then i use the warp and distort in procreate to line it up perfectly. It would certainly save time if i set a mark on the floor to line up the two shots as they are separated by weeks.
why did you fill the aquarium up and then empty it?Is that for maturing your filter? Great video very relaxing to watch.
Yes, I let the aquarium run to get things started and get the ecosystem running while I waited for the plants to be delivered. Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it. Got another one coming in a few days. And working on doing two more!
Fantastic
Thank you so much 😀
what art program to you use on your tablet to create the layouts?
Good question, I use Procreate on iPad. I love it and use it all the time.
Amazing 😮
Thanks 😄
❤😊🎉
Thanks! ☺️
Great video! Love the idea of a bucket vac for cleaning up wet aquasoil.
The best way to quickly and cleanly get it out of there! Not my idea. It was my teammates idea at a live scaping competition back in 2017.
Great, this is the absolutely correct way to doing this! ❤
Glad you think so! I've taken down so many aquariums both at home and places like conventions and clubs.
Man those roots all looked amazing, what a beautiful video from start to finish. Thanks for sharing
Yea it is pretty cool! I want to make a video on growing plants but I'm not sure it would be well received on TH-cam. Maybe I'm wrong?
@@jmaquascaping I'm always looking for fresh takes on plant growth. Everyone has a very slightly different recipe that works for them. I'm sure there are plenty of people like me who are interested to hear from someone like you who has clearly figured out something really really solid
@@FlowstateAquaticsill see what I can do to share my take on how to grow plants.
Thanks all for watching! This is meant to share how I have streamlined the break down of my aquascapes. I skipped a few steps to keep the flow of the video going and keep it short. If you have any questions let me know in the comments and I'll be happy to share my insights.
Can't wait till I get to see your next aquascape.
Thank you for watching! I am filming right now and will post the video up as soon as it grows in. I have both my large tanks in farm mode to speed that process up from months to hopefully two or maybe three weeks.
Great video my friend! A very relaxing Saturday morning watch.
Glad you loved it! Im glad to hear it was relaxing as I really am trying to emphasize how zen this hobby is and how it helps me center myself in today's world of chaos.
What would you say help achieve such extensive amounts of lush plant growth?
I'm glad you asked. I will make a video sharing my 15 years of contest experience on how I grow plants and share with you all how I light, fertilize and trim the plants to get them in optimal condition.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing. Also - are those Chihiros lights? I would like longer legs like those on my lights and was wondering where did you get them? Thanks.
They are awesome! I got them from AquaLife at sevenports.com and the price vs quality is at the sweet spot of value. The light itself has a builtin timer with ramp up/down and two leg mounting options. The short ones that sit right on the tank and the long ones in the video. I've added two units to my setup but you certainly only need one to grow most plants. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely inspirational! Please make more of these videos. The editing, the creative vision, and the attention to detail are perfect. You've opened my eyes to a whole new artform. Makes me want to be a little fish just so I can explore this aquascape. t.Roy B
More to come! I have one coming out on Saturday 12/10. Im so glad to hear this. I've been telling people about this hobby for so long and while it is a lot more work I find that showing is the best way!
Obra de arte - top
Thanks! Im glad you loved it!
Let me put my honest opinion.. Although end result is heaven i found few steps artificial, starting aquascape by copying any image (doesnt matter it won something ) and going line by line is bit uneasy.. As like nature it goes with flow aquascape idea also should be as much as like available resources like stone.. No need to break something or mold as per idea we thought..all the best ❤
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback.
I love it
Thanks!
250 ppm 😮 whats the GH and KH??
Yea this was high as I matched it to the source water the guppies came from. My target is 170 ppm after dosing. Target numbers are calcium at 20 ppm, magnesium at 5ppm, potassium at 20 ppm, nitrate at 16 ppm, and phosphate at 3 ppm. Hope that helps.
❤🎉❤
Thanks!😊
Hi Jeff can I get a video about the paludarium in the background at 0:21 with the tavern and miniature. It looks absolute amazing.
Thanks so much for watching! I did have a few up for a couple years but the interest was low and I decided to focus my channel. I do have all the film still and may create a new version but right now I am working on two more step by step videos. Both nature aquarium focused.
Woaw so impressive that is. Those little creatures live in heaven. Magical
Thanks! It is wonderful to see the fish and shrimp explore and enjoy the layout.
Have you ever tried the Aquario Neo Flow Premium? I use them on all my tanks and I'm extremely satisfied.
Good to hear! I have not. They look pretty nice. The skimmer on the outflow would be great for the shrimp but the downside is any floating stuff would just recirculate in the aquarium instead of removed in the prefilter. Maybe not a big deal depending on the plants kept.
@@jmaquascaping I don’t get much floating debris, but when I do, I simply net it out.
Your work is awesome. The layout is attractive. Congrats bro !
Glad you enjoy it! The layout has had another several weeks to grow in and looks really great now. I think I'll enter it in an international contest and share the photo with everyone.
I like your videos.. only music and aquascape aquarium speaks here
less talking...more scaping!
The best video for this year 😊
Wow, thanks! I appreciate it. Hope you like my next one as well!
It has a perfect perspective, nice depth, and a good shadow. Good work :)
Thanks. I did the final photoshoot this morning and it really turned out awesome. Can’t wait to show it off in several weeks!
This is one of the best instructional videos I've come across. Not only for how methodical you've been, but for the accompanying music - it fits perfectly. You did a wonderful job and your tanks are beautiful!
Great! I wasn't sure about the music but it did feel right when I was editing. The pace and the vibe just clicked. Hopefully I can get this right again and again.
