Thanks for the skimmer idea. I have been have a lot of trouble with mine since upgrading the oase intake tube since it produces a lot more flow. I made my own with some air line tubing and a plant weight.
No more reef tank?! This is the first video of yours I've seen. I knew you had to have had one when I saw the Tunze ATO lol. I have a reef tank, about to dive into a planted one soon. No more reef tank for you?!
Put a O ring om the skimmer pipe to set the height and stop bobing. Only keep an eye on it because it can go lower than the O ring
Wow It is beautiful! Keep it up :)
Koool video Jeff as usual ❤❤🎉🎉 loved it. Regarding the shrimp being sucked into filter.it's inevitable and not because of the faulty inlet sucking up the shrimps, but it's in canister filter where bio films are generated at record level. Somehow i feel they can sense where the food is and intentionally venture into canister via inlet pipes. Though I am stating it purely from experience and dont have any proof / documentation to justify my claim.
Tunze Osmolators and the like are way less relevant in fresh water tanks than they are in reef tanks, as constant water parameters are not such a huge issue. Personally I just add the necessary RO water with a 5 l canister when the levels drops too much.
Cool feeder! I have something very similar that isn’t digital! Can’t remember the name now but has the same compartments. I’ll check this one out. Thanks
I had the same problem with the bobbing. Since I have double tap values on the tubing to my canister filter, I solved the problem by closing the valve part way. This reduced the flow. That did the trick.
Yea that is a good trick too. Though I'm betting most folks would not want to reduce flow as cannisters usually are on the lower end already unless oversized for the tank. Also for those that may not know. Always restrict the flow with a valve on the outflow only. Thanks for watching!
You could also potentially use something like a pipette to remove a little bit of the air pocket under the skimmer to get it to sit lower.
Jeff, another great overview, these type of issues are usually skimmed over, and we have to learn thru a lot of trial and many errors. Thank you from NYC
Thanks for following along! I appreciate it. I'm working on a series of videos right now as I alluded to at the end of this one. I think you are going to love them. Im debating whether to let it grow out and then show off the full beginning to end or release it in two parts. hardscape and then planting/grow out reveal. Thoughts?
@@jmaquascaping Jeff, let it grow out, you always gives us enough detail and breakdown the processes for us. Shouldn't be hard to follow, I'm sure if any of the subscribers have questions, they'll put them in the chat.
Do you have a link for that skimmer weight please ?
I don't have a website. But you can reach out to the link I have in the description in Instagram and DM Tim. I believe this is still in prototype.
Remove some of the air under skimmer #2 with a pipette and it will sit lower in the water.
Oh yea that’s a good tip. I’ve done this as well with mixed results. Thanks for sharing!
thats what i do
Thanks for the shout out on my skimmer fix
No problem 👍
how can i order?
I got my skimmer inlet covered with fine net bag (one like seachem bag for purigen). It reduced the flow a bit so no bobbing and also none of my shrimps could go down the skimmer.
Doesn’t this also block the debris as well? Seems like a trade off?
i just used an airline tube and sucked out some of the air from the undersurface to get the depth of skimming that i wanted
i also got tired of pulling shrimp out of my pre filter. i used to use an aqua rio outflow skimmer. but honestly i have just gone back to the tried and true method of a small airstone on a tiny pump and it keeps the surface just as clean. i dont have issues with leaf litter. just tweeze them out when i see them.
It’s interesting, no, I am now.
What does this even mean
Shrimps and skimmers continues to be a challenge. But what do you think of the auto topoff system? Do you run one? Are you considering adding one?
Excited to see it planted.
Thanks Nancy!
Great combo between rock and wood, look forward to the planting. Thank you from NYC
Thanks! Ill be doing a much more elaborate serpentine stone layout next. That one will be planted. And after that I have the 90cm tank cleaned up ready for a new layout as well. So look for a bunch of new step by step videos soon.
@@jmaquascaping - I look forward to it.
I used these exact ones on 2 tanks when i was away for 3 weeks. Every other day feeding. Worked great.Had my alexa cam aimed at the the tanks to watch each feeding for the first few days until i could relax a bit. Only issue might be with condensation build up affecting flake food. I have lids on my tanks so positioned it above the feeding hole. Feel like this created more humidity around the feeder. On an open tank i would imagine this would be less of an issue. Used velcro tape ro secure it as i was paranoid it would move. Good luck
Awesome review! Thanks for sharing. My testing has been going very well. No hiccups yet. Im very hopeful that these will do the job nicely. I too am worried about flake and humidity gumming up the works. I think you are right because they are open top and I run a fan 24x 7 in the room it keeps the humidity from being a problem. At least so far. Thanks for watching!
When I had an aquarium in my office, the Division Director would come and sit in my guest chair and watch the rainbow fish spawn. He'd ask questions about the fish and plants. I don't know if he was testing me as a biologist or what. That was a little intimidating at first but it sure seemed like my work product would jump out the door when it got to his desk.
Amazing. I can imagine that was unnerving at first. Spawning rainbows in your office...dang...you are living the dream!
I need to get some shallow tanks.
Yea they are pretty interesting for doing some crazy layouts and awesome if you're not going to focus on fish.
Yes, the woods go great together, I have different woods in my shrimp tank and the shrimps and Oto catfishs love them all.
Thanks. I think so too. The straight stone pieces along with the curvy spiderwood seems to work though intuitively maybe not so much.
When you fill the aquarium with water, does the over hanging wood get water logged, and actually drip water on the outside of the aquarium ?
No. There is no wicking ime. The saturated wood will extend about 1 inch above the water line only.
What do you think do these two things go together? Does Dragon and Spiderwood make a good combination?
First like ❤
yea you are! Thanks for watching.

Do you promise the user interface is super easy? I'm not an idiot but I feel like one dealing with digital prompts and never trust the settings I create.
Yep super easy. And so far so good with no issues with the tests so far.
this video should have a million views, if the TH-cam algorithm catches it, I hope you keep posting videos and get the numbers you deserve!
Thanks. this made my day. I enjoyed this project and was hoping it would reach more people so they may enjoy it too. im glad you found it!
Love your thumbnail, can totally relate... Nice that your family can help, was away for 1 month vacation and my sister camed every 3-4 days and things went quite well... I worry more about water level then fish food so I wouldent keep that device but if you dad cant help in future at all I don't know what to say. At least it looks a well performing gadget!
I really appreciate your kind words about the thumbnail! It's fantastic to hear that family support made your vacation stress-free.
Your 7 day graph is very accurate.
Hah thanks! Good to know Im not the only one.
Jeff, I have never seen a feeder like that. I like the idea, that you portion out the amount of food in compartments. I would run test for two to three days, then extend them. Unit looks good.
Great idea. Im going to run all three for a loooong time. So far so good.
I use the Co-op one but the annoying thing is it doesn’t work well with very small pellets because even on the lowest setting it dumps way too much. You need to hack it by putting tape over half the opening and somewhat surprisingly the Co-op has no desire to mess with the design
Yea exactly the issue I've experienced in the past. The ones I've run across just aren't capable of feeding small amounts consistently. I tried to hack one like that too and the consistency was terrible. Hopefully this design works out.
I use this feeder on all of my tanks. It works great! I have never had a problem.
That's great news! This has me excited to keep pushing through my trust issue.
Please do updates every 3 months while you're home. My concerns would be fish splashing water, getting the hatch door that opens wet and the pellets/flakes get stuck and the door sticks or the food sticks, also any particles of plants, leaves, etc., that may break off and float, jamming the feeder door? This would have to be a no snail situation? What about fry ?
yea any water in there, even too much moisture will surely be disastrous. I measured and the trap door is at the worst case 4cm above the water line. In the best case on the paludarium its 30cm above the water.
One thing I'd love to hear about is battery depletion! I feel like I'd be paranoid enough to replace batteries every time I leave town unless I'd done some testing on that beforehand. I keep thinking of my lawnmower battery display, which, based on actual runtime, seems to be ⦿⦿⦿⦿ means 60-100%, ⦿⦿⦿⦾ means 30-60%, ⦿⦿⦾⦾ means 10-30%, and ⦿⦾⦾⦾ means I'm about to turn off 😂
Yea I cut this part out of the video where I discuss the battery deal. They are built-in USB-C rechargeable batteries. This is a glaring weakness in the unit. The manual says it takes approximately 3 hours for a full charge. Online reviews are saying it will run for months on a single charge. We will see. And yea it has the same lame indicators. I'm planning on being able to fully charge before going away. I would much rather if had a way to put your own rechargeable batteries in it. Once the included ones are shot the unit is done for and who knows what the longevity is going to be.
Have you tried the blanket blackout method? I heard that it can work on a heavily planted tank, but haven’t yet tried it. Btw, your aquascapes are amazing, thank you for sharing them, and your knowledge.
Yes I have. It does knock algae back pretty hard. The issue is the plants also are in sad shape. Then you try going back to your previous settings and it just takes a long time for the tank to find balance. I haven't used the black out method in over a decade. I don't consider it a viable option. For most algae you can beat it by just concentrating on growing healthy plants and keeping things clean like I show in some of my previous videos. BUT some algaes are unbeatable...in those cases I usually knock down and start over. Clado and spiro...ugh.
Thanks for this info! I use the barrel type feeders from Aquarium Coop using pellet food for big fish with good results for quite a while now. I use them on 2 tanks full time but I not for the main feedings, just once a day for a treat! The hopper type that I have tried have failed due to moisture building up on the opening and causing food to stick and clog/block the opening. I also am liking the option to suction cup the thing to the aquarium lid! This Petbank feeder seems to have solved that problem with the automatic opening and closing door. I think this feeder would be good for vacation feeding. For a trip longer than 15 days, I would probably set it up to feed every other day or something like that and load it to cover the whole vacation. It also seems to be usable with all types of dried food! I will try one myself!
Nice. Thats awesome you have a good solution for your fish! Thanks for your take on the one Ive got. It does seem to check the boxes. The test is off and running. Ill test the extended days away where it feeds every other day. Being able to go a month would be amazing. Between the feeder and the ATO I should be able to leave confidently. I probably have some issues when I get back like overgrown plants but a severe trim job could solve that too.
@@jmaquascaping I've ordered one and will play!
Jeff, I am currently testing the petbank feeder. seems to be working well. I have realized that the only way to skip a day is to not load every compartment. So, you still only get 15 days out of one load. Darn, I was hoping there was a way to program it not to rotate for a day. Still seems to be a good feeder for smaller fish and allows for a mixture of foods to be loaded. I put dried fry food, small sinking pellets and larger wafers in togethers. I will be on a trip soon, hope it works out!
I hate when feeders clump and then drop about a weeks worth of food in one feeding.... yikes.
yea that sounds like a nightmare. Im assuming thats the barrel type. Im thinking those maybe work for large tanks and fish?
What are your experiences with these so called “Intelligent Feeders”? Let us know what you do when you’re out of town.
Nice piece on the Ohko stones! Haven't ever used it before, anxious to give it a shot.
They are awesome once you get past the part where they are so dam messy.
I have 40+ pounds just waiting to get wet.
"Bring me my dragons!"
Hah! Thanks for watching.
Jeff, another great video, I find it sometimes difficult to find in NYC, but I love working with it, good luck at Aquashella,
Yea hardscape is tough to find. Not only do we need to find it, there needs to be enough and there has to be a good variety of sizes. Didn't make Aquashella. So bummed.
@@jmaquascaping 100% in agreement.
I have two massive and beautiful pieces of dragon stone. Yet, in something like a 15 gal cube, they would fill the space. Maybe even a 30 gallon with the two. Yet, I’m so tempted to split them to make them more manageable…. Ugh, the possibilities
Great video! I've recently grown really fond of elephant skin stones. What are your favorite stones to use in scaping?
Oh. Elephant skin stone is tough. I find it the toughest stone to make look good if doing a stone forward layout. I like any stone that is irregular, with triangular shaped thinner pieces. I find them the most versatile. And I really like the darker stones for the improved contrast with the plants. Sometimes you can find lava stone thats really nice but its quite rare, seiryu stones are nice but I wish they were darker...and yes I know they can be acid burned. The serpentine stone I collected in California has been excellent to work with.
Dragon stones are definitely one of my favorites, great video!
Yea its hard to beat. If it was a dark grey or blackish...Dam!
Great visual storytelling
Thanks! Ive been doing my best to keep improving. Im a newcomer to the whole youtube thing. And your feedback really helps!
I've always avoided Ohko stone as Lava Rock is so much cheaper and fits my more dutch inspired plant focused scapes. Now I'm considering trying to create a new aquascape with Ohko stone after seeing how easy you can chisel it!
Yea lava rock can be really nice but it really breaks poorly. Most stones in fact break poorly. Looking at you seiryu. I think we have a challenge of not having tons of hardscape to pick through so being able to build or break pieces makes for overall better layouts.
Very interesting. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! I’m considering making a informational video on all stones covering all topics to help aquarists choose a type for their projects. Its pricey but the stones last forever.
I love it & so do my shrimp! I've got a mix of it along with seiryu stone.
That sounds interesting. Dont see it mix ed Too often. Reminds me of a contest where the winner went all in on mixing the two!
Fantastic. I can't imagine the amount of time that amazing village took.
Oh you noticed that? Yea it took a huge effort. The effort paid off...this is the longest living layout Ive ever created. Ive made a few updates and changes as things progress but by and large its the same as it was almost 2 years ago.
