I cannot imagine personally climbing the Eiger. K2 looks risky and Everest appears treacherous, but I would still prefer them to the north face of the Eiger!
Mount Everest South Col route has relatively low fatality rate. In an old interview with Messner, he said high altitude climbing in the Himalayas is less technically challenging than difficult climbs in the Dolomites or Yosemite. The difficulty of high altitude climbing is different, more about pushing the mind and body to the extreme.
It’s different challenges at high altitude the oxygen level is getting very low your physical and mental abilities decrease. Your physical ability is some fraction of what you have at lower levels. Your decision making ability is limited. Even with relatively easy technically routes this is challenging. And the weather conditions can kill you easily. They eiger combines highly technical sections with dangerous weather patterns at a medium altitude
