I am amazed and mesmerized by anyone who can let their bird fly free. Very beautiful and well trained birds! I would love it if he landed on my shoulder! He'd definitely have a new best friend! I've had budgies and cockatiels since I was 13 (I'm 35 now). I love birds and will always have them. Keep up the wonderful work with your gorgeous birds!!
Awesome vid, I have a galah and a ringeck.. I have seen Zachary a couple of times several years ago as I used to live in the valley, he is a charmer I must say. Great video lookforward to seeing more of them
Lol, I like the reaction of the public. There so amazed to see this what seems 'wild' bird, then it flies back and there mouths open even more x3 Good job, I could never do that with my birds.
So beautiful to watch and oh how I would love to free fly my Dino, but my heart wouldn't be able to take it. At least for the time being, we're sticking with our 30' leash and our Yurt style house, which is basically a huge aviary that he lets me live in with him! :)
@LordMattman Glad you enjoyed watching. Maybe one day you will share your flying videos with us. We love to take him out and show him off. Zach also loves the interaction with humans. He seems to prefer humans over other birds.
I just recently got a blue and gold macaw (he is 4 months old) and I was wondering if you could give ant tips to housetrain/ teach him to freefly (I like on 2 acres)
I have an 18 month old blue and gold called mikey. Would love to teach him this. I take him outside with me but he won't fly he just wants to walk and follow me everywhere talking to me and he's wings aren't clipped.
Hey in my bucket list I've always wanted to own this type of Macaw. I'm often at New Farm park, I'd love to see him if you still go to New Farm Park? Just wondering if it was ok to watch and ask a few questions about Macaws? Regards Michael Byriel
My partner's Ringneck Parakeet flew away a week ago. He spotted high in a tree and tried to lure it down using carrots and his cage. He never came back. What happens to these birds when they fly away? By the way, the location is North Alabama.
Man thats is beautiful....I am so scared to try and do this with my Greenwing macaw she is about 7 years old now and a little more calm than the previous years and she does mind better now. But I am stilol scared to try this in fear she will fly off and not know her way back or fear of a hawk or something attacking her. I live in a rural area. How did you train your macaw to do this? My macaw has flew around the neighbors house a few times and flew back home but I was so scared she gone.
Would you say a macaw is a good bird as a pet? i've been doing alot of stuff lately.. and trying to figure out.. if im going to get one.. which big bird to get... i know everyone always says smaller birds and all that are better.. but i've been set on a bit bird for a long time.. and i've grown up around small love birds, and cockatiels my whole life.. trying to decide which is better a macaw, a hawk head, or a cockatoo... please help a little and tell me about macaws, :3
Does he ever fly out of sight of you? My friend used to free fly her B&G in Hawaii. Hers would also invade others space, landing on people etc. One day she was free flying her and something spooked her. That had happened before and her bird always flew home. This time she never showed up at home. We think she might have landed on someone and they grabbed her and kept her.
I'd love to get a Macaw! How did you teach him not to fly away forever? Do Macaws always stay near their owners even if they are new owners, or is this self learnt over years of trust building? How long did you have this Macaw before you let him fly freely? :) Thanks!
Thats really cool... I'm looking at getting a macaw in the next few years, would love to be able to do this with mine, how long did it take to teach him?
Depends on where in the world you are? If you are in Australia, there are breeders in most capital cities. The Parrot Soceity of Australia can give you breeder contacts or I can put you in contact with someone in Brisbane.
wow, how do you get him to come back? When i do eventually get one i really want to let it live freely around my house but im worried that it would fly away. Is there any tips you could give me?
I'm on the Sunshine Coast and have a B&G. Pluto is 2 - I'd love to let him fly outside but I'm terrified of losing him. Can you tell us more about how you accomplished this please?
is there a risk involved in this action >? Also I used to have an African Grey who unfortunately flew away one day :( I am thinking of getting a Macaw, is it totally different expiriance?
@hayderade Training is quite simple and easy to learn. You need patience, tolerance and time. Having a good relationship with your bird is of prime importance.
@Dorothyinstead How do you teach your parrot to do that? It chooses you instead of the open wild. How did you manage to get that right? Weren't you afraid that the bird might fly away? 99.9% of people who don't clip their birds' wings loses them forever. No matter how closely they were bonded to each other and how happy and well cared for the bird was. Once they find out they can fly they take to the skies. What's your secret?
@sshakallis Hi, there is always a risk in allowing a bird to fly free. You can take precautions to lessen the risk of loosing your bird. Having an intimate bond with your bird is paramount, being educated about freeflight is equally important. Generally a Macaw is better suited for freeflight because of its size. The smaller the bird the greater the risks. To minimize risk, you need maximum space, maximum bond, patience, and education. Checkout 'Wings at Liberty" website. Ask questions!
If you are ever in Sydney and are in need of a moving perch/target, I am available. Preferred payment is a snuggle (with the bird - although you look hot, I'm a straight girl). How did the ring-neck behave while seing your Macaw flying? Is he/she free flying?
Wish I could freefly my kids, The Blue and gold would be fine but the Green wing, wouldn't find a nice high place and refuse to come down... Also, in Perth it is illegal to free fly exotic birds. :(
Hello there! First of all im so excited that i have finally found someone who freeflys in brisbane! I have been looking all over chris biros yahoo group and site for someone who can help me since im a begginer! My 15 week old alexandrine has a a fairly nice recall now and i think hes ready to start going outside but I would really like some help particuarly for his first time out. Is there anyway you could help me? Id be willing to pay for classes from you! I just really need all the help an
WARNING! It's wonderful to see parrots flying. They were meant to be born free and living in the wild. However, this is extremely dangerous for your pet bird. It puts him at risk of being killed or seriously injured. An unsuspecting dog could easily try to attack the bird and he/she could fly out of the area unintentionally and lose his/her navigation. This happens all of the time. The bird could also be seriously injured if attacked, or a frightened human could inflict injury. DON'T DO THIS!
@CarnalContessa The first time is always a very anxious time for the bird lover. Have you checked out Chris Biro's website on freeflight? There is information i found quite helpfull. I would be happy to give you tips if you like.
Okay, guys, you cannot just train a parrot freeflight in a few simple steps. Please do thorough research on the subject before attempting this. Asking on a TH-cam video is useless. Also, as a proponent for such, if you are looking into buying a parrot, check your local rescues for birds, too. In other words though, great video! I had heard exotic species of birds are illegal in Australia. Is there a way around that? Or do I have incorrect information?
be very careful these are birds they are not boomerangs! I know fo a fact this bird has spent nights in the tree at this same park when it would not come back down untill the next day. it all looks great in this video but reality is they scare easy. This bird now is housed in an aviary not doing any free flight.
@15667 Tip1: educate yourself on the subject of freeflight for companion parrots. I found the website wingsatliberty dotcom very helpfull Tip2: form a close bond with your bird.
No, African Greys take a lot of time to get freeflight trained. They are far more intelligent than macaws, You have to train ur bird for freeflight, u did'nt do it thats why ur bird flew away... Watch the freeflight training videos...

That was incredible. U and ur parrot must be extremely close. So beautiful
Haha, I can only imagine some people's response to seeing him free-fly like that xD Awesome! I hope to teach all of my future birds how to recall.
So beautiful to watch and oh how I would love to free fly my Dino, but my heart wouldn't be able to take it. At least for the time being, we're sticking with our 30' leash and our Yurt style house, which is basically a huge aviary that he lets me live in with him! :)
I love this video! It's so good to see this.
Zach is beautiful. His markings are stunning ☺

He totally buzzed that old lady! LOL
@LordMattman Glad you enjoyed watching. Maybe one day you will share your flying videos with us.
We love to take him out and show him off. Zach also loves the interaction with humans. He seems to prefer humans over other birds.
just great!! thanks!!!
I am sure the lady has every size of perch imaginable, including her arm, legs, shoulder and head, which are a macaws preferred perches!
It is awesome that you can do this. Birds should fly, even if only in the house.
@mapaboy Glad you liked it. It is a good feeling when he returns.
awesome. great job.
awesome bird you got there :) i wish i could afford 1 :( one day :)
Wonderful birds and you handle them with so much ease, great song. What is it?

You should have a thicker perch for a Macaw bird. :)
I love this vid so love your pet Macaw, they're my 'Wonderwall' do All Macaws get along?
How do you even begin to teach a bird to do this without having to worry about it never coming back
I'm on the Sunshine Coast and have a B&G. Pluto is 2 - I'd love to let him fly outside but I'm terrified of losing him. Can you tell us more about how you accomplished this please?
Elizabeth Leahy We now live on the Sunshine Coast as well. Do you still have Pluto? We would love to come and see your B&G. Are you flying him yet?
Wooooooow!

What kind of perch is that and where can I get one?
is there a risk involved in this action >?

I am thinking of getting a Macaw, is it totally different expiriance?
I was wondering did both of those birds bond with you?
@hayderade Training is quite simple and easy to learn. You need patience, tolerance and time. Having a good relationship with your bird is of prime importance.
how come he doesnt fly away?

Awesome video! How old was Zach when you allowed him to free fly for the first time? Do you still have him? :)
is there a risk involved in this action ?
@revounette I wish i could read french.
I am guessing your comment has to do with the fact Zach is flying without a harness.
1:50 lol
What's his name, Boomerang ?
