I remember seeing their video for Push It at like 3 in the morning on MTV. I was like "What's with his hair?".... watched the entire video and ended up buying the CD the next day. Totally under-rated.

SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS VIDEO. I had the pleasure of meeting Wayne after their first ever UK gig. I mentioned to Wayne that I wished I had had a camera, and he said ''Lets go and get one'' - five minutes later we had a disposable camera and were walking down Oxford Street taking selfies.

1999 When Bands Attack in San Diego. Saw them accidentally too. Then, saw them about another 9 times on purpose from a 50 person venue in SD, to the Roxy on Hollywood Blvd. We lost something big when he went.

I'm actually starting to enjoy watching Gibson eat itself. There's nothing i can do about it, so may as well just have fun observing the chaos.
Gibson must still be kicking themselves for letting Metallica slip through the cracks. Most people know Metallica loved Gibsons and used them on their early albums. One of the biggest bands in the world should be playing Gibsons (not ESP) and showing them off on stage all over the globe if Gibson's artist relation guys did not have their heads up their a$$.

I saw every one of his shows in San Antonio, Texas, one of the most rowdy shows was Static X and Soulfly, amazing legendary show. I love all the music. thanks for the video, the sound was very good.

My father was a technician in a music store in the 90's and he got more Marshal Valvestates than any other amp to be serviced.

Seriously, they were tinny-sounding and weak and fizzy thirty years ago, and they definitely haven't gotten any better with age. People bought 'em because they were the cheapest full-sized Marshall, and got rid of them as soon as they could possibly afford something better.

Wayne - cool dude. He and Maynard grew up about 45 miles apart - there is something in the water here, and an interesting culture of trying to find your own sound using what you have. It's less so now with online music stores, but back in the 70s and 80s we used what ever gear filtered into the area and just tried to make it our own by trial and error. Even the little garage bands had weird gear that lead to each band having a unique sonic signature, and now days everyone is trying to copy someone else's sound, so Im not sure that is an improvement.
Sounded great, another nice recreation. The valvestate was my first amp and then I later got the MG head and cab. Local band guitar snobs always ripped me for not having a "proper" valve amp, but it was all I could afford and I enjoyed experimenting and getting creative with squeezing cool sounds out of budget gear.
Gear snobs on the internet helped kill public interest in rock and metal.

Just got into this band. Industrial/nu/alternative/extreme, whatever. They were heavy as hell and had an instantly identifiable sound, despite drawing clear influences from the likes of Korn, Pantera and Fear Factory

Met up with Wayne 1997-98 somewhere in there Ozzfest. He happen to be walking through the parking lot...I happen to be walking through the parking lot...myself having a drink with some bozo's out there....and Wayne passing out their disc for the kids to catch a quick lick at what they sounded like....So much fun that year....Type-o,Pantera,PM5K,Coal Chamber guys, Oz, Rob T, Mikey Inez, Zakk, Statik-x Snot-Sepultura, Halford was there Mudvayne….well I blur the years early...we had fun every year and everyone wanted to be on that tour. Sure to be a good fucking time! Wayne was really a good guy...I must be honest and say at the time I never noticed the issues he was living with....maybe I didn't be around him enough to see things clearly...However...Fuck all that...dude was a great guy and his band was original and fucking tight. Could careless about the fighting and all this stuff....I enjoyed them nightly and Loved their work! Great guy, Great band. He is missed-...Also many other's as well Pete from T.O.N. Lynn -snot Dime, Vin Mikey, All u guys are missed some kind of serious....FLY HIGH BOYS! FLY FREE!

Wanye's amps were repaired and modified by the bands first Guitar tech Larry Melero (rip) . I don't remember what all of them were but I do remember the output transformer was upgraded.

Part of that big sound was Koichi's VHT Pitbull UltraLead. The UltraLead's have KT88 tubes in them. Huge and tight sounding. On the guitar side of things, Wayne's favorite guitar was a 1972 Les Paul Goldtop Deluxe with mini humbuckers(modded and swapped in full size humbucker in bridge). He also used a Gibson Gothic Flying V and a Gibson Gothic Explorer with a Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge. As far as cabinets go, The last stage rig I seen him with were Marshall 1960 cabinets. Majority of the material was tuned to CFA#D#GC. Some tracks on Start a War are actually Drop A#.

I saw them live literally last Monday in Houston. That tone was way closer than you think! Don’t discredit yourself. It sounded exactly how they did live with ear plugs in, so the sound was crisp!

GOD I F#@KING HATE THAT AMP!!! Had one for 2 days, complete bitter garbage. As far as Static-X, I loved them. I loved how the played with industrial styles and still had such a unique sound. I saw them on Ozfest in like 1998 or something. They played Wisconsin Death Trip from start to finish FLAWLESSLY! It was insane! I also really dig their approach to riff and song writing. They used like 5 chords in the entire album but played in a way to give each song its own feel. These kinds of dynamics are lost on a lot of metal heads today. Everyone wants to cram as many power chords and riffs down your throat as they can without doing justice to the songs. Cheers man! RIP Wayne!

Bro your fucking enthusiasm and Energy are astounding.
I have a love/hate relationship playing industrial metal with the Tech 21 SansAmp PSA-1! It's the most ridiculously tweakable amp I've ever used, the pots feel like they've got 200% more range than they should do. The level you can refine the gain stages, and the amount of gain you can controlably use is frankly insane. Even the line out is passable for Ministry/Rammstein tones (interestingly, both Paul Landers and Uncle Al have verifiably used them heavily, most notably for me on the albums Sehnsucht and Rio Grande Blood). The moment you start using EQ and saturation and/or a character-heavy power amp after it, you quickly get album ready tones. Most importantly, it feels like no other amp I've played.
It's a labour of love though... Holy SHIT does it take some tweaking to get the sound feel right. Like grab yourself box of Adderall/Ritalin and sit yourself down with two packs of strings level, it's painful. That said, the next day when you go through the presets (and the preset function is the ultimate saving grace), you'll have 4 or 5 tones that will never be touched for decades.
The best tones I've ever had come from DR DDT strings (10/60s) on a ESP Eclipse, with a Bareknuckle Nailbomb bridge pickup (direct to jack, no volume/tone pots). That goes into a Radial Tonebone V2, purely for the clean gain, and "Baseline/Drag" function. Those last two allow you to somehow tame obscene levels of gain on the PSA-1 into something that feels perfect for playing Lies Lies Lies or Rio Grande Blood. Bit of a unique tone, but if you love it, you love it.
I thought it was just my personal preference, but my late bandmate (who could legitimately play guitar, unlike me, who literally just smashes power chords because it's fun and simple) also fell in love with the PSA-1, there's something about it when used with heavy, fresh strings. As if to cement it's perfection even more, the PSA-1.1 and 2.0 are both absolutely shite: the pots don't feel to me like they do anything, all of the balls and power is gone. It's way easier to use, and get normal tones out of, but the PSA-1 is something else. Love/hate.
One day you asked what bands we would love to know how they made their sound, I forgot one:
Blind Guardian
A lot of people have been trying to find what harmonizer the guitarist is using with his wah, I have my doubts, probably an Eventide or an Intellifex. But you are pretty gifted to find what gears the bands used, and seriously I am sure you will get a lot of hits with this one.
Same for me with Static X - they were opening for Megadeth after the release of WDT. They came on and, I mean, from the first 30 seconds I was BLOWN AWAY by Waynes huge guitar tone, powerful vocals and overall performance. Never heard of them before that night, was buying the album the next day

I also seen them for the first time opening for Megadeth in 99. They opened with Bled for days and I was fucking blown away!!! Purchased WDT the next day and became a fan for life. Last seen him in a small club in Spearfish South Dakota. A few months later he died. RIP brother Wayne!!!!!!!

This makes me feel better about still using an MG. It's not fun to mic up but I swear the emulated out isn't the worst thing ever, and it does approximate an 800/900 for practice at least.

Before watching, I remember as I had the same model for a while which was a Marshall MG-series 100 watt transistor/solid-state amp before they began adding onboard modulation and delay. I also have had a few valvestate Marshalls in my time. The contour control on the high-gain channel of the amps is very useful along with the typical tonestack, It has/was often abused by people, in the same way, the infamous Boss MT-2 have been yet in moderation it is possible to keep the mid-range you want/need dialled in whilst cutting out some of the lower mids around the 260 to 380 Hertz region. It is a shame Marshall decided to stop doing that as if they were to release a good proper transistor amp with a class A/B solid-state power amp instead of the now common class D variety, With that contour control brought back along with keeping the more recent "frequency dependent damping" switchable FDD option which tightens up the power amp and adds a more aggressive voicing. No onboard stuff such as DSP modulation and time effects and also no digital spring reverb algorithm as that is an area we all have pedals, multi-effects floorboard units and/or rack mountable devices which are capable of far better results. The team just spending all their time and research put all into making a really good transistor amp that hasn't cut corners and isn't specifically aimed at beginners as such. A pair of or even a trio of FX Loops (One for the clean to crunch channel, one dedicated to the high-gain rhythm and lead channel plus the third would be universal over the amp and regardless/independent of the others. A preamp out and power amp in and finally the array of loud speaker outpiuts.
I'd buy one for sure.
If I am wrong then my bad but still stand behind the rest of what I said regarding Marshall bringing back stuff from older designs to offer a great qualuty transistor/solid-state amp.

Props on the Boss NS-2, A pedal that I depend on and no other suppressor/gate does it so well for me and I've tried a ton even my studio rack gear like Drawmer and dbx gates are not the same, I hear people claim they "suck tone out" but that is nonsense to me, Yeah best to not use if you don't need but for heavy high-gain stuff they get rid off all the crud you don't want and leave what you do, They don't chatter....etc. either. I've not tracked other players without using one and most have ended up getting their own after playing through one set up right. Dean
:D I just "discovered" Static-X this week. Completely missed them back in the day. Good stuff. Regarding his wife, yes he was obviously into booze and drugs, but she got him going on the oxy meds. They were her prescriptions for the most part. Oxy is highly addictive so there you go.
As sad as it is to say, his wife is the reason Wayne is dead. He never got heavy into drugs and drink until he met Tera. The implosion of the band happened around 2007/08 when Tera started having tons of influence over him.

The key to Solid State is to use as neutral of speaker as you can. EVM12L or EM12 Legend work VERY well. Solid State heads hate vintage voiced speakers. (The Eminence EM12 didn't exist in '98-'99, so it's a safe bet that Electro-Voice were used.)

It's funny how people either love this amp or hate it with a passion. It sounds like shit on its own, but boosted with a decent overdrive and an EQ pedal in the loop, it can sound pretty good.

If the Valvestate was the VS 8100 model, like I suspect, it's responsible for early Meshuggah tones as well. I bought that head and a tattered JCM800 cab for $600 even at a pawn shop 10 to 15 years ago at a local pawnshop, and the current me absolutely kicks myself for letting that rig go for even less, though I paused the video right as you were speaking on VS to digital issues. Hoping some functionality knowledge of such is a consolation prize. On with the rest of the video, fingers crossed.

As a guy who is recently getting into Static-X, I can't tell how close it was, because I haven't listened closely, but the tone was awesome. My suggestion is something Tremonti plays or played in. I remember you have a Dual Rectumfrier ;)
The VS-100 was the first Marshall I bought. But I used it with a 1960A cabinet, which at that time had the 75 watt Celestions loaded in it. It was a good move buying that cab instead of the dinky Valvestate one, as it had a thicker tone and was convenient when I decided to upgrade to a real valve amp, but I got a Peavey 5150 instead of a Marshall though. Yeah, I think there is something in that it sounds better recording valve amps to digital than solid state, no matter what kind of analogue or digital "tube modelling" they are attempting. Tape sounds great with both valve & solid state amps.

I held off on seeing Static X for so long. i finally gave in when they came to Denver years ago With Otep, Hell yeah, Horse... and Coal chamber or was it powerman 5000? it was one of the colfax joints. Fillmore or Ogden theatres. but Static X fucking killed it! I was blown away how powerful they were live. had so much respect for them after that. everybody else... okay.
EXACTLY! I saw his hair, thought ah shit here we go with this crap...Then after two minutes I was ploughing thorough the pit fanboy for life.
I'm at the point now where I'd love to hear any other speaker than a Chinese-made V30. The V30 sound has been way beyond overdone, and since they started making them in China, the quality went way the fuck down. There are so many other kick-ass speaker options out there that it drives me batty to see pretty much everyone using V30s for recording. For example, I have an Eminence HempDog12 in my 1x12 practice combo, and that thing drives like a beast, and the comparison between the HempDog and the speaker I changed it out for is literally like night and day. I also have a 2x12 ext. cab loaded with a couple of ElectroVoice Black Labels for live use, which they are perfect for, since they are rated at 100 watts. They hold up to loud stage volumes better than pretty much any other speaker I have experience with. They are also a drastic improvement over any typical V30 tone I've ever heard.
Great job on this. RIP Wayne. The Cure, eh? I think Smith was using a Fender Bass VI at the time or at least that is what he used when he was writing riffs if I am not mistaken. There's footage of them playing "A Forest" in the early 80s and he's using the Bass VI.
That's the exact song I'm doing. I'm probably going for the tone from their first TV appearance because it was better than thier album version IMO but both were gold.

They absolutely played in drop C. At least on Wisconsin Death Trip. At least Wayne. Unless when I asked him face to face after this album was released he lied to me for no reason. COT is also correct Wayne used a gold top on this release. The pickup was a Duncan Distortion. There was a pop up he was endorsed by Washburn at one point and I do not recall that. I just remember Gibson, the gold top on the album, a gothic flying v live and SOMETIMES a gothic explorer. I remember the other guitarist using a VHT and Ibanez. Though, I do question if the amp was a valvestate. I was under the impression it was a completely solid state amp like an MG100 or something like that.
@@zeusenstein watch the video's from their first tours or the Ozzfest 2000. You can see how he is grabbing chords. I stood in the front row on their show in 2003, I remember he played in C standard and it was drop Bb for the "newer" stuff (back then). Some people just call it drop tuning but they don't particularly mean "drop".

My first 'big' amp, a VS100R combo after having a VS15R as a home practice amp. One of the big capacitors wasn't properly secured properly and came loose after about 4 years but that was the only problem I ever had with it. Clean tone was OK, but the distortion was hot garbage. The VS15R is still in a cupboard at my parent's house somewhere, they're meant to sound huge if you record with them and I've seen a couple for sale for daft money.
their live sound was heavy as fuck. I couldn't believe they used a valvestate either. I saw them open for fear factory on the obsolete tour and the sound was perfect

I have a question about amps: Is it possible to put two head amps on top of one another? I saw a video off of Sylvia Massy's home video of System of a Down in the studio and Daron Malakian's amp setup was a Marshall Plexi running into a Mesa Boogie Dual or Triple Rectifier. Love love love watching your videos and I just burnt the Peace Sells video to VHS so I can replay your awesome stuff man! :)

Sad thing about valvestates is they’re better than the Marshall 25 I got two years ago. I didn’t keep it very long. I was something like 13 or 14 when Wisconsin Death Trip came out and I LOVED that album. Loved the tones you got for the video. I saw the ripped dvd footage you mentioned. I think it’s called something like Where the Hell Are We and What Day Is It? Ulrich Wild worked some magic on that album. Nice work, man!
My backup and "going to jam and have a few beers" amp is a Marshall avt50 . I'm not saying it's great, but it's not bad. Has fooled more than one person...

Have been tempted to pick up a VS100 a few times as they are so cheap. Just never went through with it though as they really are only good for one particular sound. Maybe someday if I have play money sitting around...

Not to nitpick, but I'm fairly certain that Wayne Static used C-standard, rather than drop-C. Hatebreed and Arch Enemy do the same thing. Tis part of the reason why there are some tracks that were recorded in Drop-Bb. It's rather more easy to take C-standard and turn it into Drop-Bb than it is to detune every string.

I have an old valvestate combo. It still works but the fan is noisy... but the noise is an 'A' note so you can tune your guitar by it. Though if you want to mike it you better write a song featuring a droning 'A' throughout.

any comments about the SMG video where glenn explains about the guitar recording technique used by Ulrich? its basically a good amp, V30, shure sm57, Audix d2 tom mic covered by a moving blanket all going through a cheap behringer mic pre amp.
Yep I haven't seen it yet but it's in my feed. That's been a similar setup I've used for years re the moving blanket and drum mic blended with the 57 so that's pretty funny. I'm sick of the v30/sm57 thing though. Overdone IMO. That's a newer techniqie and since that was introduced in the mid 90's as a standard, the hits dried up re metal and rock.
