    I've told people that before Silver Bullet there was Bob Seger System.. they had no idea! I had the "45" of Lucifer... hearing that voice come out of the young Bob Seger is amazing!!!

    What's always tripped me out about Seger's early songs was that he was barely out of his teens when he started making records, but he always sounded so much mature for his age. You'd assume a much older dude was doing these tunes, and then you see this mop-haired young dude tearing these songs up like an old pro. That must have really surprised folks back in the day,lol.!

      Off the album titled Mongrel. This record was one of many reasons I have been a life long fan. Bob Seger is what one wishes all rock legends were, a solid person and great player who has delivered for 50 fucking years. I'd bet there's not a phony bone in his body. Thank You Bob!

    Can't believe i forgot Lucifer. Grew up listening to him on a transitor radio tied on to my bike with the antenna sticking out between the handle bars. Moved to rural Alabama and alot of people tried to get me this listen to this new guy. It was Seger singing Night Moves. I started laughing a friend had sent me the album when came out. I put it on my stereo then started pulling out my old 45's and albums. We listen to Seger the rest of the night. Needless to say ever time anyone came to my house that is what they wanted to hear. Will die loving Seger!!!!!!!

    Gotta love Bob! He is one of the very few who was around since 60's and has made it all the way up to the present day without embarrassing himself. Seriously! Never went off following some ridiculous fashion trend and just did his beautiful thing. Not many others could make that claim. I want to say Neil Young because I love Neil, but in truth he did have a few miner moments of what we'll just call lapses in judgement.

    Had this song in over 40 years.... I live in the south now, man, I miss the Detroit Rock sene of the late 60's - early 70's. SRC, Amboy Dukes, Seger, Grand Funk, MC 5, et. al. Motor City ROCKS!

    • @stevee231
      @stevee231 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alan Hause that really was a special scene...and if you look at the musical landscape of the time, it was so heavy in comparison. I think it has had more influence over time than the much more widely known SF and LA scenes of that same era. It was raw, gritty and music for the sake of making music. And aside from the MC5, it wasnt steeped in politics like SF nor had an art house/folk vibe of those LA bands...and even the MC5s political overtones were more of a satirical middle fingers up type of thing. It was just gritty rock n roll with absolutely no window dressing.

    From "Travelin' Man," the book by Gary Graff and Tom Weschler, Tom explains that he sold the Gibson Firebird guitar to Bob for $75 profit in August, 1969, and it was pristine at the time. Tom was amazed later that Bob painted it, but the paint was inspired by a flag-painted guitar owned by a member of the MC5.

Knowing that Brand New Morning was like Bruce's Nebraska, I passed, for Rambling Gambling Man, Seger Seven and Mongrel, Hoping to come back later for the rest. However, my opportunity passed very quickly, as they were "recalled" within a month. Maybe within Weeks. I got what I wanted. Smoking OP's and BAck in 72 were on a WB subsidiary Palladium. He is so young he doesn't even look like Bob Seger!

    Back in the early 80s I would run into Bob stopping at the Lemon Peel. It was a great place to stop for a drink on Woodward Avenue. He was just socializing. He would talk to anybody.

    i always thought the crosscut saw was a reference to the albert king song of the same name featuring the subtle lyrics: "Now, I'm a cross cut saw, drag me 'cross yo' log / I'll cut yo' wood so easy, you can't help say "hot dog" i'll let you draw your conclusions as to what the meaning could possibly be there

    I'm really embarassed to say that I did not know Bob Seger was the embodiment of garage rock in the 60s...this stuff I'm finding on youtube ranks up there with the best of the music in a era that set the blueprint for rock....anyone know if there are CDs with this old stuff?

    On the new Deep Purple album "turning to crime "( all songs are covers on that one ) there is also a version of this song.. Good choice.

    Translated, "grey snake" refers to the interstate highway, and means touring ("Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" should come to mind)...
    "Takin' time to grind my crosscut saw" means in between all the ladies ol' Bob was gittin' wit, he actually had to take time to play some gigs and use his tool of the trade (the guitar, which other guitarists called an "axe" in order to appear just as inventive as Bob's witty term of "crosscut saw")
    Damn hippies, always makin' up catchy phrases and code words...
