- Bob Seger and the Last Heard Heavy Music Parts 1 and 2
I've heard many attempts to put one and two together. Always as if they are a continuation of the other part 1 and then part 2. But parts 1 and 2 are the same backing tracks just a different vocal take and slightly different mix and that extra finger pop at the beginning of part 2. They don't sound good as 1 and then 2 as the song build volume and energy. SO I cut this to include all parts of both sides. The only edit that bothers me was the abrupt stopping of the fade of part 1 to begin the fade of part 2. But after a few plays I began to like it. THE COMPLETE parts 1 and 2 are included. To sustain the building of volume and energy it is part 1 for a verse than part 2 then part 1 and so on.
Forgive me if I gloat but sometime when I hear popular music on commercials edited to fit I often say I could WAY better than that. This is not about being as technically accurate as it is HEARING THE MUSIC and how it moves. ENJOY About 5 minutes of Bob Seger and the Last Heard as NEVER BEFORE HEARD.
If you were wondering As far as the video YES I GOT LAZY and borrowed some others slide show and then made a slide show from some pictures I have. The quality difference is obvious and yes some actually put up a video of playing the record. came in handy.

Many don't realizeBob Seger had a career BEFORE "Hollywood Nights" and all that "popish" stuff from the 80's.
His BEST rocking stuff was in the 60's and 70's!!

I did, been listening to him since 1965 (The Last Heard), from there he just got better and better! Seger never played with a band, bands played for him!

Used to see him at bars around Detroit & Ann Arbor in the early 70's before he came out with Beautiful Loser. I've even seen him at the Howell armory in Howell MI. It was just a gymnasium with bleachers. Those were the days.

Seger is SOOOO damn underrated. His voice is legendary and he is one of the greatest song writers in terms of actually telling a great story in his songs. Amazing talent.

Followed him in Michigan, and actually spent days at radio stations picketing them to play Bob Seger and Heavy Music! Bam ! they did and we all know where his career went after this song!!

actually he didn't make it big outside of Michigan until Live Bullet came out in 76, he still lived on Rattalee Lake rd in Clarkston until about 1980, even cutting his own grass on a riding lawn mower.
Detroit had the best and was and is the true Rock-N-Roll Capital of the World ,Go back to CoBo Hall ,The Grande Ball room ,East town Theater ,Dose not get any better than that ,Rock-n F-en- Roll

Man, I was THERE! Plum Street, the whole shebang. My younger sisters couldn’t wait to do all of this great RocknRoll stuff, but in the ensuing four years, most of it was over. We weren’t Lucky!
I had this 45. We’d play it at pizza parties in 4th grade. Edwin Starr’s War was another great song. Of course I’m from Detroit.

I lived in Detroit in the '60s and bought this single. Moved to Chicago suburbs in 1969 and gave this record to our high school radio station to play as Bob Seger and the Last Heard were not known there. Needless to say, turned a bunch of high schoolers on to what was to come.
I remember Bob used to sing this song all the time live on The Rocking Robin Seymour Show in Detroit that broadcast live from the Roostertail. He was giving it up too when he sang this song, just like in the recording. It was a joy to watch him perform.

My best friend and I have been fans since junior high in the 70's in Redford Michigan so is her mom.
On her 80th birthday at.the South Lyon restaurant Old.time rock and roll came.on.
Her mother was up out of her seat,.onto the floor like she was 16!
She now has a year great granddaughter who when old.time.rock and roll.came.on was dancing and clapping in her high chair.

My Sister and I used to go to Notre Dame in Eastpoint, Michigan to see Bob Seger. Funky clothes If I remember right red and gold striped bellbottoms as some danced and we sat at the edge of the stage. Good times!
Small correction: Notre Dame High School was located in Harper Woods on Kelly Road, not in Eastpoint (then known as East Detroit). The house that I grew up in adjoined the Notre Dame football field located behind the high school. To get to the N.D. dance all I had to do was hop the fence then cut through the football field to get there. Went there many times with friends from my high school (Harper Woods). I have many good memories of the place. Notre Dame H.S. was closed down in 2005.

in 1967 the newly formed Bob Seger System played at my high school in Detroit. It was our Freshmen Fall Dance. The played music from the Last Heard and the soon to be released Ramblin Gamblin Man album. It was awesome.

one rarely realizes that the Motor City "Rocker" (Bob Seeger and the System") sang the theme song from an old movie with "Ringo Starr" as a cast member. Sorry Bob, the music was great ,,,,, but the actors didn't do your song justice. We had it all in Motown. We had every genre, of music from the voices (Davey Ruffin), the 4 tops, Marvin, Stevie, Michael, Dianna, Aretha and the whole Motown sound. But you, Alice, Mitch , and Ted made a difference that most of the world will never understand. From Tiger Stadium to Commerica Park and the love in my heart. Thank you for the music that times cannot change. and will never erase.
Dave Smith you are absolutely right about Michigan and Detroit Michigan being one of the great rock'n roll hubs in the universe don't Forget the rock'n roll roots go back to the 1950s with one of the greats Bill Haley & his comets,, and then the other guys from the 60s such as MC 5, frijid pink, the frost, Grand Funk Railroad, etc. etc. etc. frankly you are exactly right, Michigan rocks.

Springsteen has NOTHING on Seger. This brings back memories of my childhood growing up in the Detroit area and watching my 2 older sisters on Swingin' Time.
What an amazing voice and amazing talent.
Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp have both acknowledged Mr. Seger's influence.
@@rowlffffff Chuck Berry and the next crew like Mitch Ryder and Seger and Grand Funk and Nugent out of Michigan. Kid Rock. It's all handed down. All of our blessings. These guys were influenced by Berry but also Motown. Soulful. Michigan had that unusual influence of kids who heard Mitch Ryder AND Smokey Robinson.

Saw them back in '67 at the Rolling Stone Teen Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Persecution Smith and Heavy Music were my 2 favorites back then. Bob played the 6 string and keyboard. When switching from guitar to keyboard, he would swing the guitar over his back. Great memories...

We had Bob Seger before anyone else. He was a local phenomenon in the mid 60's. East Side Story, Prosecution Smith, this one. The first jam of his we had on Capital was "Noah."
For the "Record" His Capitol releases started with 2+2=?/Death Row then Ramblin' Gamblin' Man/Tales of Lucy BLue, Ivory/ The Last Song ANd then NOAH. Now I don't know who the "WE" in this comment refers to so I may have over stepped here. I checked the wiki on this which Discogs would have been better for but mostly I got this from MY memory of buying the 45s and the Capitol LP. I thought NOAH was better than even Bob thought. SO there is no accounting for taste. OK at least side one was.

I'd zip up there on my Sting Ray (Sears Spyder, actually) taking my life into my hands. What I have is a long fermented memory of those days. We did have 2 +2 but I don't remember the label. Good Times.
@@johnbroughton3401 Thanks for sharing memories. This is history. Unfortunately, I was born in the 80s, and never got a chance to see any bands from Michigan... The closest was seeing the Eagles (Glenn Frey was the leader) and it's one of the last shows he ever played. Downtown Detroit.

Loved it when my Downriver HS students in the 80's came to me about the "new" band called Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. They received an education that day.

I am commenting ON THIS ONE because I built it.. Most of the attempts to part one and part together have consisted of the complete part one followed by the complete part 2. WHICH I FEEL doesn't flow naturally. I mentioned I had great success with the original Tommy James Mony Mony. Stretching it by repeating a few parts seamlessly to make a longer nearly 5 minute edit. I use an already longer unedited stereo version of the song, which made it easier to put together. I read most of your comments.

Listening to this, you can see how he evolved. His early songs were done as a young man with a crazy life and his other songs were written from the worldview of a veteran tourer, successful guy who still didn't get the money the Studios owned him in the day. Hollywood Nights was written because visiting his great Michigan pal Glenn Frey when the Eagles were raking in money after Hotel California and he was still struggling after Night Moves. Don Felder testifies to this day he almost crashed his car at 100 mph listening to "Hollywood Nights." Every musician, actor/actress or wannabe in Los Angeles knew about that world in 1978. Everyone, everything ... was for sale.

This is a great video. Thanks for putting this together. Bob Seger references the 1960's Scottish rock band N.S.U. as well as S.R.C at the 5 minute mark. He also mentions Steve Winwood while throwing down some bravado. S.R.C is the Scot Richard Case Band a really good Detroit band back in the 1960's to the early 70's. If you want to hear some great obscure Scottish psych rock. Look up N.S.U. here on youtube. They toured the USA but only released one album of really great music. Almost no information exists on the Internet about N.S.U.. Just check them out and let me know what you think..

Seger wasn't playing high schools in 75 76...his LIVE BULLET Lp came out in 75/76.

I always wait for the Stevie Winwood line. :) QUESTION: do people outside of Detroit even know this song exists? I can't believe they don't -- but then again, there aren't millions of people playing this with the windows down, so ignorance is the only explanation that makes any sense. It's just one of the greatest AM radio anthems ever.
I managed to live all over the country, and am still astounded how localised the Detroit musicians were, and probably still are. Several years during the 70's in Texas and Tennessee. Nobody had heard of Bob Seger. Iggy, MC5, no one. I am lucky to have spent so much time in the Windsor clear channel area.
I hear ya'. I grew up in NE Ohio, and we knew about Seger and the MC5 because of our great station WMMS. I moved to TN in '99, and all anyone here knows about is a few Silver Bullet Band tunes.
What Davis talking about,, in part two of heavy music bob Seger calls out Steve winwood the singer from cream. One of the reasons he's called the man.
Steve Winwood was the singer for the Spencer-Davis group.
Vocals for Cream are usually Jack Bruce or Eric Clapton.
Steve abd Eric were together for Blind Faith, one of the first "Super Groups"

I don't even listen to Silver Bullet "music." This is my fave song of all time. Played it 40 times in a row after I bought it. How could Bob go so far astray? Ok, ok a little harsh perhaps. 😊

I understand that CKLW was a Canadian station. Did they use the Drake "Boss Radio" production system or did they have their own production style? I lived in the Detroit area from 1965 to 1973 (Oak Park). This radio station and WKNR "Keener 13" were the go to stations to listen to. Motown forever!!!
+Spanky Schooler, Every Station in the country followed Windsor Ontario's CKLW back then if they were not playing it, nobody was. Check out the big eight or Rosalie Trombley, she became the most respected music director in North America. She took chances on artists and made many a star, the lady just knew good music. It was because of her that CKLW was such a huge influence...

Nice mix. First listen I had my doubts. I had to listen to it a couple of times, now I like it.
Thanks! Must check: As I recall, only one part of this is on the Box Set, "The Cameo / Parkway Labels" retrospective. Only 4 discs, CD, pretty packed. IF it only includes Part 1, or Part 2, it should have had the entire recording. Cut something not as important! So, you can see, these labels had a lot of variety! Thanks for explaining the 'backing track' aspect. Sometimes. labels 'cheap out,' & limit studio time. If you have a lot of singles, & play both sides, this sort of thing is rather common, one way or another. Side Two, may be just the instrumental. (Rare occurrence, but the instrumental, "The Horse," by Cliff Nobles, was 'just' a backing track, and became a big hit, while the overlaid version with vocal, went nowheresville.) One more: The Isley Brothers, "Twist & Shout," Wand / Scepter, the single on the B side, has, I think, "Spanish Twist," which is just the instrumental part of the hit, with a 'bargain basement' guitar overlay. If you listen carefully, you may hear some vocal 'bleed through,' baffles in the studio. If you look up the history of this track, as I recall, it was a long, evening session. Tensions began to get high, anger. The singers left, in a huff (...mobile!). Did not stick around to wax a B side. (Although other recordings from this period are available - this is, of course, B 4, "This Old Heart Of Mine." Motown.
They have subsequently released the complete CP Bob Seger which includes A and B sides. Being the lazy bum I am I did not recut this using these masters. Part 1 is from the CP 4 disc but side 2 was from a version I thought was the best of the versions I had available. Which I believe is the 45 I recorded. And since youtube may or may not allow me to replace the audio or the complete video and keep the views and comments. Bob's yer uncle..

Bob Crewe also released the backing track to Jenny take a ride by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels as 3 Minutes Heavy The Time Keepers. Search that on youtube, There are mono and stereo version. Talk about a lay bum He even took the writing credit. Bee is the freaking time keeper for sure!!!

I guess Part 2 got the airplay, I had never heard Part 1...but your mix certainly makes for some good listening. And thank you for the explanation in your script. Used to see Bob at the Sugar Shack in Columbus...Ramblin' Gamblin' Man was big. Never forget those overhead ducted drums.

@@valerieelliott410-it was a song off of Cream’s first LP, “Fresh Cream.” The initials stand for “non-specific urethritis”… a form of venereal disease. Bob might have meant “M.S.U.”… but it didn’t come out that way…
This man starved for years before he finally broke out big-time. My favorite Seger has always been the early pre-fame material, though....the music up to the "Get Out Of Denver" period. His music saved my sorry, hip, bored West Virginia ass.
I have heard many attempts to put the 2 parts together, They all tend to run side 1 then 2. It figured that was not the way to do this. Part 1 verse and chorus, Part 2 1st verse and chorus etc. The edits are hard to hear and except one The stopping cold of the fade from whichever side it is to start the fade portion of the other. It basically works. It is the weakest link in my edits, I have the TV commercial edits and knew I could do better, Consider this PROOF to that statement. NOT A FLUKE!

The only cut I don't like even now is the break in part one's ending refrain to start the part two's ending refrain. It jumps out at yeah. At least it did me. BUT I couldn't think of another way to use the second ending. It has grown on me a little. Seems plausible to a point. But it remains the only OBVIOUS EDIT, And that's the point of it. To make it all seem natural.

Yes I agree but what about the NSU mention just before SRC and Steve Winwood reference. Most people miss that, heck most people don't have a clue what Bob's referring to when he says N,S.U. I would like to ask Seger why he references N.S.U. one of the most obscure rock bands of all time. They are a Scottish Psych band that only released one album of unbelievable music and then "poof" they disappeared never to be heard from again. Check out "Turn on or turn me down-N.S.U." I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed. Hope you see this comment after 5 years! Cheers
@@JAMaxeRestoration-“N.S.U.” may be a reference to the Scottish based band, but it more than likely refers to the Cream song from 1966’s “Fresh Cream” release.
@@truethought62 you could be right. When I was playing around on Google that song came up, I was already familiar with it and thought about it. It seemed because he mentioned the band SRC and then Steve Winwood that NSU the band fit better since he was mentioning bands not songs. I mean why not just say Cream? But like I already said you may be right, it could be that saying NSU is a lyrical artistic thing because he thought it sounded better in the sequence. yep i was there also savage grace . the pack mitch ryder was there .drove there with my buddys in my 1960 ford 3 on the column . i had a seger bumper sticker up untill a few years ago i got from the forest .
