What you describe here is EXACTLY what happened to me. I asked for the Viper, I got the CSP. I scratched my head over it; I hated it ... and then one day I loved it.
I had the orginal as a kid and loved it. I probably used it more than the orginal viper. I loved how you could transform it in so many different ways. I was never a snob about things having to be in the movie or TV show if they looked like they fit. Probably because I was not really into reenacting the scenes from the show but into creating new adventures within the universe. One of my favorite Star Wars Toys was not a star wars toy at all but the large Eagle from space 1999. It was sized for star wars figures long before there were star wars figures.
I remember seeing these in the store as a kid and somehow not noticing the "rocket" aspects and instead thinking it was a Colonial Top Fuel Space Dragster, and that Starbuck and Apollo were going to stage up and lay rubber on the Cylons, then use Boxey's Daggit as a drag chute.
Weirdly, as a kid if I’ve seen this, I might of considered over the Viper… Simply because you can get a pretty close Viper facsimile with the fighter mode, as well as other configurations as shown by Michael. But then I’d worry about being that kid with the “fake” or “cheap” version of the popular toy… like when I ended up with Bone Age figures instead of Dino Riders 😂 I suspect it would’ve been what my mum went for when buying toys off the shelf for me… maximum play value meaning potentially less spending. As an adult, I think this would be an awesome piece for a Battlestar Galactica collection on display.
Oh Nostalgia! I had this toy as a kid! For the exact reason Michael describes. No "cool" BSG toys were on the shelf but plenty of the "dumb toy"! Have no clue what ever happened to it. Maybe sitting in my old closet at my parent's house. Thanks for the memories!
Wow, I'd have had fun playing with that as a kid. Reminds me of my Micronauts Mobile Exploration Lab. I used to love "transforming" it on adventures around our living room. I did have a few Battlestar figures and a viper and Cylon craft but don't remember seeing those...
As a kid, I would mostly just build the "attack fighter" configuration. I never had the Viper toy. But I would look at my Stellar Probe attack fighter and say... "Identity theft is not a joke, Stellar Probe. Millions of families suffer every year!" 😉
I did not have this as a kid. I had never seen one in the stores. I had a Viper, Raider, and even the Scarab, which rolled on land and had interchangeable pieces like this does. I knew about this because of the boxes and advertisement for it. Very nice attention to detail. Great toys are coming from people who have a passion for the toys and not the big companies. Thank you for the great videos.
I find that its actually a great idea, its basically several toys in one. If I had owned one as a kid I would have spent hours playing around with its various configurations.
If memory serves, almost all of my friends who had the BSG toys in the late 70s here in the UK also had the stellar probe to go along with their vipers and the like, and it was used quite a lot. The upscale is a wonderful piece of work.
I've just watched a post by the excellent WWII channel about drug use in the Allied military. I suspect the executives at Mattel in charge of the line at this point in time were ex-military, still high and gytery, going all bonzai on their plans, when cooler, more sane minds were required. Well, it kinda fits the timeline, it explains the decisions on the Galactica line, so I'm sticking with this idea! Great ship recreation by Rob, fantastic work! 👏
I just can’t get over and bright white these are!😂. Anyone who collects these vintage know how they turn a crème color. Thanks for letting us know sir! Have a great day!👍😁
Nicely done. I love that the maker community is breathing new life into some of these old "classic" toys. It is a niche market to be sure, but you have to admire the skill and effort, always.
As a kid I used the minifighter configuration as a early era colonial viper in the 1000 yahren cylon war. I also remember this vehicle and the one with the wheels as pegwarmers that were on clearance for years.
I'm actually gonna start to make my own 1:18 scale toy line but in the classic three and three quarter inch scale not the modern four inch scale it probably won't start until a few years from now but what I plan on doing is essentially make real world vehicles both old and new probably more old ones at first because I just love vintage military but with similar details to vintage g.i. Joe but better and plus a fare amount of my own unique creations and I plan on advertising by sending sample boxes to some g.i. Joe TH-camrs including you so be prepared for that in the future but again it probably is not gonna start anytime soon like it will probably be a couple of years before it comes out but again I promise not to disappoint and just be prepared to start seeing my line start to pop up here and there.
The only toy I had like this in the late 70s was a micronauts space vehicle modular and could be made into several smaller vehicles this toy is a total surprise to me never even knew it ever existed
I had the small scale one back when I was a kid, as well as that buck rogers laser scope fighter. Probably because my mom went to the store to get a viper or buck rogers fighter and they were what was left. great memories, wish I still had them.
Holy Crap! I had forgotten all about that toy, a friend of mine had it!! Another friend had the Viper and Raider, i used to play with them when we would go visit.
I had the Stellar Probe as a kid. I liked that it was modular and you could configure it in different ways. I didn't care that it wasn't on the show. I just thought it was cool to have a space ship toy that you could put an action figure in. I never had the Viper or the Raider. I did have a plastic model kit of the Viper. I remember catching Battlestar Galactica on TV a few times, but I don't think we managed to watch it every time. To me it Star Wars, but on TV, and without as many space battles and more grown ups talking about grown up things. As a kid, Buck Rogers was a bit more accessible, but I somehow never managed to acquire any Buck Rogers toys.
I think it looks great 🤷♂️ Their work is phenomenal and as odd as the ship is, seeing it scaled up is actually pretty impressive. Thank you for the share Michael. Cheers!👍
Thanks again, for your fantastic videos. One of the best creators on TH-cam. Funny, set I owned this, along with some of the otters: Ceylon Raider and Viper! I liked the ability to take the Probe apart and transform it into a Viper.
my suggestion for you, is to spray a clear coat over the toy with the decals on ,this should make the decals have a permanent bond and add a layer of protection against yellowing, this is what i learned from making model ships with a lot of decals, and gloss clear coat will make it and the decals shine great but there also non gloss as well i use rust-oleum spray paints
To be fair this was a great toy. And worked really well if you already had the Viper. Which was similarly modular, but only split into 2 parts. The nose and engine block. I’ve never been sure if Mattel invented this out of whole cloth, or if this was in part inspired by some concept ideas or designs from the show. There was one episode where Starbuck was sent out in a special unarmed long range recon Viper. I always suspected that the idea for this thing came from early concepts for that episode, which were scratched due to no money for new models or effects. Oh and Mike you’re wrong. The Weirdest one of the Mattel Vehicles was by far the Colonial Scarab. The land vehicle that was Not the Landram. The weird hybrid Viper 6 wheeled ground vehicle that shot missiles out of its ass.
I was one of the kids who WANTED the Stellar Probe when I first saw it. Unfortunately the one I got didn't have the satellite. But... It was still a missile firing version thanks to it (and other BSG toys) being at a US Toyland store at Kadena AFB in Okinawa at the time. So they didn't get recalled like the ones in the states. The probe was cool with it's three missiles. To me, the one that sucked a$$ was the Scarab. That was a goofy toy. Nice to see a big Stellar Probe available now!
Can't say I agree with you at all. I remember seeing the Stellar Probe in a department store and being fascinated with it. The artwork being a main reason. I had all four vehicles and had the most fun with the Stellar Probe. Another thing, check out the Lego 60227 Lunar Space Station from a few years ago. From the sleek spacecraft up front, the modules behind it, and the solar array at the back. With just a little reconfiguration you have the Stellar Probe. Lego often borrows from other sources. So, not bad for a toy from 40 years ago that supposedly no one wanted.
I’ve never seen this toy before, so I don’t have any nostalgia for it, but man, this thing is cool! Great job to the maker and excellent review Michael!
This was the only Battlestar Galactica toy I had. Mine didn't have the launching missiles so it was after the choking incident that forced Mattel to make the changes.
Looking up vintage Battlestar Galactica toys, the only one I remember specifically having was Muffit the Daggit. I can't directly recall ever experiencing, much less owning, any of the ships, though I have vague recollections of something modular, but I'm not sure. I was 3 or 4 at the time, and memories of that time are scant and fleeting. Though I would like to think I would've found the Stellar Probe and the Colonial Scarab to be pretty neat to play with back then.
Thanks for sharing these! I'm starting to watch Battlestar Galactica and now I want the upscaled vehicles. I wonder of this guy making them will do Expanded Universe ships like the E Wing.
I remember that, but I never had one. I liked the "modular" gimmick. (I did have the viper, though. And the plastic model Galactica, which I still have, it held together very well considering it's a model and not a toy!)
At least they knew what kids were really wanting--a Viper mode!, and the multiple, multiple configurations give this a lot of versatility at a cheaper price point. So you kind-of get a Viper, and you can make several other things as well. If it was two different modes, Viper and something else that would definitely feel cheap to me, unless the other thing was just somehow way, way cooler than the Viper was. And all the other things can actually make sense in the Battlestar Galactica universe, as opposed to the Justice Jogger...
I wondered in the Landram video, if he was going to do the probe, and he did it. Now, I'm kinda expecting the Colonial Scarab and Viper Launch Station sometime in the future.
I had one of these back in the early 80s. Yes it was a bit strange (and not in the show), but I had fun with it. Close enough to a Viper, sort of. Also I had the Colonial Scarab (had to look it up), which again wasn’t in the show, but you could mix and match all the pieces to make some very strange and entertaining vehicles!
Wow! I have never seen or heard of this thing. I remember bugging the hell out of my mom when we would go to the store for anything Battlestar Galactica and I never got anything from that series...nor did my brother. No clue why but I'm sure she probably told me I had Star Wars toy and that was enough. lol
Hey, instead of stickers, have you considered using water decal transfers? You could scan the stickers, and then laser print them in blank transfer sheets, which Is a common technique in the Warhammer communities to make custom decals.
I had the Stellar Probe. I put a small ball on top of the satellite nose cone and rocket engine and used it as a robot. It was really a neat toy. Great work on the upscale version.
You said this is either for a fan or nostalgia purposes I think I would treat it a third way which is this is a brand new spaceship that can be used with dozens of 3 and 3/4 scale figure lines... This is Boba Fett's new ship or hey how about the GI Joes are going to space in this, my Tron figures are going to use this in the Grid, or Evel Knievel is going to jump over the canyon in it.
I never even knew this existed. It's kinda ugly but really beautiful at the same time. I can see how if this was your toy you'd love the upscaled version. I really this. Of course I am talking about the original design and not this product. That is amazing work and a first class print.
Pity they never made a Flight Corporal Rigel action figure. She's the girl with the Princess Leia hairdos that did the countdowns for launch. Complete with her IBM console.
What you describe here is EXACTLY what happened to me. I asked for the Viper, I got the CSP. I scratched my head over it; I hated it ... and then one day I loved it.

DITTO! Ditto on all counts! Brothers from another mother?
Wow. As a kid who was 5 when Battlestar aired this thing would've been the toy of my dreams. SO MANY OPTIONS.
Another awesome product from Geek Candy Labs!
Thanks for review Michael, appreciate you sharing neat stuff like this!

You weren't kidding when you said you were hitting the ground running! YES! Great video.
I remember playing with my Adama & Starbuck figures in my Landspeeder.
So good to Michael happy. It's fun to see rants but wow this is fantastic. I'm so impressed by these upscales. Bergeron is a mad lad!
Also insert my © rant here again. The fans ar doing the best work!
Just came from the hasblow livestream. I wanted to be reminded what GOOD TH-cam can be. Thank you retroblasting.

Bring on the Scarab!!!
Six wheels, three missiles, and a whole lot of awesome.
Up until 5 minutes ago I didn’t know this existed but woahhhhhh. So cool. Configurable !!!

Thats one proud looking probe.
If I would have realized how great the toy was, I may have bought it. I like the modular design. Thanks

Never really been a Battlestar fan but man is that a cool concept for a toy.
I had one not ever seeing Battle Star Galactica as a kid. My aunt thought it was a Star Trek ship when she purchased it for my birthday. lol
my suggestion for you, is to spray a clear coat over the toy with the decals on ,this should make the decals have a permanent bond and add a layer of protection against yellowing, this is what i learned from making model ships with a lot of decals, and gloss clear coat will make it and the decals shine great but there also non gloss as well i use rust-oleum spray paints

"To be fair," and the unnecessary "Michael you're wrong." You're batting zero with this comment in endearing yourself to my attention.

Kinda want Playmobil to make Battlestar and Buck Rogers. Playmobil Micronauts would be my dream toys though. Great video!
I’ve never seen this toy before, so I don’t have any nostalgia for it, but man, this thing is cool! Great job to the maker and excellent review Michael!
K.O.R.A. and I will toast a bottle of Ambrosia over this Labor of love.
I had this one and loved it. My brother had the viper I always made the shortie. May have to get 1
This was the only Battlestar Galactica toy I had. Mine didn't have the launching missiles so it was after the choking incident that forced Mattel to make the changes.
Never heard of this toy but looks very cool. I would have loved that as a kid. Be De Be De Be De
I like it, the ship looks pretty nice

0:27 Now I'm picturing Superman in his Justice Jogger chasing after Lex Luthor pushing a cart full of 40 stolen cakes.
A couple dabs of mod podge (in the jar, same kind people use to preserve jigsaw puzzles) placed under those stickers should help them stick better.
Thanks for sharing these! I'm starting to watch Battlestar Galactica and now I want the upscaled vehicles. I wonder of this guy making them will do Expanded Universe ships like the E Wing.
Final faction had a series 2 I got them the other day at the dollar store love the videos
I loved the BSG toys.
Another beautiful vehicle by a great fan maker.
I remember that, but I never had one. I liked the "modular" gimmick. (I did have the viper, though. And the plastic model Galactica, which I still have, it held together very well considering it's a model and not a toy!)
Reminds me now of what Evel Knievel would have used to jump the Grand Canyon

Yep, this is the one Colonial ship that I had.

More fan-made goodness!
The viper mode is really close to the older model viper that predated the Mk1 in the episode The Long Patrol
Wow! I have never seen or heard of this thing. I remember bugging the hell out of my mom when we would go to the store for anything Battlestar Galactica and I never got anything from that series...nor did my brother. Classic BSG don't get enough Love.
I kinda like the short fighter mode of this vehicle. I can imagine it being a close air support variant of the traditional Viper
FRACK! That is so cool! :)
Fantastic!
I guess I feel privilaged to have had the Viper, the Raider, and the Stellar Probe as a kid.
Hey, instead of stickers, have you considered using water decal transfers? You could scan the stickers, and then laser print them in blank transfer sheets, which Is a common technique in the Warhammer communities to make custom decals.
Geek Candy Labs/Rob please make a Spectrum Patrol Car for Captain Scarlet's 3 and 3/4 inch line of action figures !!!!!!!
I had the Stellar Probe. I put a small ball on top of the satellite nose cone and rocket engine and used it as a robot. It was really a neat toy. Great work on the upscale version.
Wow. Nice.

I would want this just for my G.I. Joe stuff. I'm not even a Battlestar (old or new) fan.
I never even knew this existed. It's kinda ugly but really beautiful at the same time. I can see how if this was your toy you'd love the upscaled version. I really this. Of course I am talking about the original design and not this product. That is amazing work and a first class print.
It looks like the Evel Knievel stunt rocket.
By your command
Pity they never made a Flight Corporal Rigel action figure. She's the girl with the Princess Leia hairdos that did the countdowns for launch. Complete with her IBM console.
cool video bro
If the stickers won't stay-would clear coating over them work? I'm not sure how 3D printed materials would react to clear coat.
What is so funny about the Name "Colonial Stellar PROBE" ha? Wait till Biggus Dickus hears of this.
I had that!
NICE
Great video! Hope you and Melinda are doing well.
Wow
I have the original Cylon fighter
Would a clear coat of paint sprayed over the stickers work for making the stickers stick or does the #D print plastic not like paint either?
Not sure.
Nothing is as bizarre as supes jogger
I had one
I wonder can your friend or Stan Solo, make repro Panosh Place Voltron figures? And finally make Sven?🙏👍
Great to see this type of work for fans. So refreshing to have individual people doing this stuff!!!
Robert really nailed the modular coolness of this unique toy. Thanks for highlighting it. 👍😎
mmm cool
Has he cosidered making helmets for the pilots, now that they can actually fly their ships?
He already does. I talked about this in a previous video.
I include an unpainted helmet with each probe/viper.
@@geekcandylabs28
Awesome, sorry, I know I've seen it, but ptobably forgot. You do amazing work!
Always great videos and reviews in this part of TH-cam.
I immediately clicked to see the video. Man...this brings back memories as I never actually owned any of the originals back in the day.
Not bad for a "stellar probe".
