  • What is up youtubes? We are here today to take a peek inside this notorious home built 5 cylinder engine and find out what caused the engine to fail. Needless to say I was very shocked at the condition of the internals after these last few years of excessive abuse. It's hard to kill an AAN!
    I've got plenty of footage and creativity for the channel this year, I just have to find the time to get the builds done and get the footage uploaded so I appreciate your patience. I work long hours at my job so I have very little time for my own projects. It gets very tough at times but the support from the channel really keeps me going!
    You guys are gonna love the next video, I've got some real goodies to show you ;)

    You've got the right attitude Q4L, and I'm excited to see her rebirth!
    Something I often have to remind myself with project cars, especially when I'm 10 hours deep into a job that was supposed to take 2... if it was easy, everybody would do it! _Everybody_ would have a monster, if it was easy... but it takes time, effort, energy, and yes cold hard cash too. Especially on the internet, lots of folks are "bout that life" until they throw a rod or something, then it's "fk this money pit!!!"

    Have to say these bottom ends are so strong. Just hearing how you threw it together. Not even balanced....yikes! 😂

    • @quattro4life20vt
      @quattro4life20vt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't have it balanced or line honed, but I rigorously checked all clearances and specs on the bottom end. Everything looked really good so I sent it. For the price those scat rods are very good quality, they came in not far out of balance at all so again, I sent it. Thanks for watching!

    Make sure to replace that white oil pressure sensor with a new high quality one to avoid the possibility of an oil leak. Ask me how I know.

      This is not my daily anymore. I usually just take it out on weekends so it takes me a good 5-6 months to roll over 1,000 miles so I think that is pretty cost effective. However, I do get my oil and filter for free at work so it doesn't hurt for me to change it excessively ;)

    Totally unrelated, but I saw in the C4 groups that you build your own downpipes. I’ll only be running a 7400 till I get another bottom end built, and it’s kind of a “budget” build. Thought about sleeving where the wastegate recirculates and dumping it, and then chopping it at the weld where it splits and going 3” from there. Was also told to get in contact with you and see what you’d charge to make a downpipe and dump tube. Love your videos btw, been following a while now!

    Apparently I have a 92 S4 I had a engine rebuilder rebuild my 2.2 rebuilt. It's been a long time. I finally got rid of the engine rebuilder. It needed a ECU. I took it to a Audi specialist? After 3 grand. He said it now needs a oil pressure pump? He said There's a oil pressure sensor. But he doesn't have the tool to check it. As in all things. If you want it done right. Do it yourself! Do you know what tool for the wide oil sensor with 2 prong removal tool and where I might get it? Great video.

    Pro/con of grabbing another 5 cyl shot block to build up? Pistion oil squirter nessisary? I guess one major con would be you're buying good pistons, but is that really?

    Nice work buddy. Ive been watching alot of late. This engine build was / is the same as what im finishing up aswell. Excited to see the damage was minimal.

    • @quattro4life20vt
      @quattro4life20vt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't have it line honed, when I removed the crank and bearings I reinstalled the main caps with arp studs and checked the roundness with a dial bore gauge.
      They were all perfect so I felt comfortable reassembling as is. Checking specs is a good way to sleep better at night but I do recommend line honing for arp studs as I will this time. Thanks for watching!

    I have an early 92 S4 with the tuna can and the gear on the end of the camshaft. Would that indicate 7a cams? Or were some AAN cams equipped with the gear?

    • @DarinNederhoff
      @DarinNederhoff 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the 7A cams come from the normally aspirated 90 quattro 20 valve or Coupe quattro 20 valve in the early 1990s. They were a common (less expensive) modification than fitting the RS2 (ADU) cams. So in a nutshell, someone would have had to swap in the 7A cam on your car at some point.

    Do you reccommend all OEM gaskets/seals? Theres companies like victor reinz, erling etc.

    • @quattro4life20vt
      @quattro4life20vt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No way, too expensive! All of these gaskets and seals are Victor Reinz and I recommend them as they did great over 5 years and I could probably still reuse all of them. Valve cover, cam seal, front crank seal, mls head gasket, oil pan and pump gasket etc etc. I only get the rear main oem, buy the cheap one and compare. You will see what I mean.

      @@quattro4life20vt i used vr on mine also when the oem paper(or whatever the material is) gasket blew. And no issues. But 3 months later it got bearing failure. So this block never went to the machine shop, but has ARP main studs?

    • @quattro4life20vt
      @quattro4life20vt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is correct, it would have been in my best interest to drop it off and get it decked and line honed/bored for the studs but because of circumstances at the time I was only able to drop off the head.
      With the crankshaft and main bearings removed, I torqued the main caps with the arp studs and checked the roundness with the dial bore gauge. They were all perfect, so I was confident enough to reassemble it as is.
      I know of a few shop built/tuned engines that didn't last half as long as this home built AAN and I will always be proud of that. Long live AAN!
