Calculating the chance of survival is important especially when you carrying precious item (drop upon death, expensive limited usage and etc.) WOW have very complex mechanics with endless combination of strat.
If you ever raid in wow, you’d see that they always plan. You have to plan, or else your team will all get killed (wiped). Especially on bosses or tricky raid sections. People need to have a plan or everyone will die.

The guy that cast aside the meticulous planning and went "Save him!" is a gem. I can't imagine such mindset nowadays in these toxic and competitive multiplayer environments we find ourselves in.

It was more toxic back then. Everyone just cries and hides in private chats more so you dont really even see teams anymore.

You rarely get randoms that see themselves as part of a team, you most likely get matched with tryhards, lone wolfs and 3-4 stacks that let you know that THEY are a team, but not the rest of the players. The rising team spirit, when you were matched with randoms, is gone. Nowadays, I hardly find anyone, besides myself, joining a server and trying to make the best of it by thinking as part of a team :/
I get told GGs by everyone these days. Back in 2008 i got called the N word 15 times a match
