Foam board makes the best mold boxes. It's all o use. One trick I use is to coat one side of the board with clear acrylic gloss sealer. This is the side of the mold that comes in contact with the rubber. After applying the acrylic gloss, let dry completely. A blow dryer helps. Apply a fine coat of mold release spray. Do this just before you pour your rubber.
Great video, thank you. What do you think about springform cake pan with removable bottom and contact paper as the removable bottom. I would tape around of course. have a lot of moulds to make for shallow flat ornament business. What do you think? Would that work?
Very cool!! I never stressed about making a mold box. :) My son did when I asked to use some of his Lego pieces to make a mold box many years ago now. He was so worried he would not get them back. Of course he did. :D I did not tape them up though inside and really had almost no leakage of the silicone. I use anything for making a mold box... or even as a mold. Once I cut a tennis ball in half to use as a resin mold. :P It worked and I still have the tennis ball halves. - Heidi
I wanted to let you know that I tries using cleaned out yogurt cups to mix clear slow resin. The resin came out all cloudy. Must have reacted with the plastic cup. Live and learn. At least it was a small pour. Love he how toos. Mike
One tip is that when you've used up a mold, cut it into pieces and include it in your mixture of new silicone. You'll use a lot less of the new stuff while recycling the old stuff! Also measuring properly and using the right-sized mold box will help cut down on excess waste.
My first time I used plaxiglass to make the mold with, I just cut it to the size I needed and rolled it into a circle and tapped it together, unmolding was easy since plexiglass doesn't like to be bent, it just snaps itself back flat when tap is cut demolding the silicon.
Ok , good video but lack of details. some materials here can inhibit silicone cure process, papers and u must know which plastics u r using, especially when you r working with platinum-based silicone
I have a question now in a few videos I’ve seen in between molds I seen they brushed on some clear stuff so the molds would separate easy can you tell me what that stuff is please
Hi Rob - that sounds like Rubber To Rubber mold release! When making a two part mold it's necessary to use in between layers to avoid the silicone sticking to itself. Here's a link! www.alumilite.com/accessories/rubber-to-rubber-mold-release-1oz/
@@AlumiliteCorporation thank you now I for got to ask another question I’m trying to make molds for parking light lens for my car so I’m lookin for the the color amder in color so what do u recommend or what the product is it I’ll be needing for my project see I’m a 1st timer in doing this so yes help is much needed thank you for your time
I'm shocked , you don't put a bottom ? something to stick your blank to? I just started making and am going to start selling molds. I know I am a little late in the game, lol. The bottom to me is what ruins my molds, I have tried book binding tape which has wrinkled on me and left wrinkles on the mold....the piece from the mold would not be effected, but of course it's not sellable. Then I tried transfer tape and it worked good for one of the molds, but the other it had wrinkles. So how do you get a way with no bottom? TYIA .
For a successful mold, it's ideal to leave about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of space between the item and the box on all sides. This ensures the mold has enough thickness for durability without using excessive material. If the item has delicate or intricate details, you might consider the larger end of that range (closer to 1/2 inch) to protect the mold during de-molding.
hi i would like to make a silicone mold of a dead baitfish or shiner so i can pour a white plastic resin master of it. I need the silicone to be able to capture all the detail of the baitfish scales , gills and fins etc. What silicone from alumilite would work the best? i want to take that master and make more molds of it so i can pour plastisol to create my own paddle tail style soft plastic lures. Thanks 😀
Dollar Tree is Full of mold boxes, and foam core 🙂
YES! Dollar Tree is a great place to find affordable mold-making material - especially if you get creative!
I like 3d printing my mold boxes, i print them in vase mode and it makes for really easy demolding.
We were just talking about trying that! Great idea - thanks for watching :)
this guy will optimize your workflow, thats for sure.

This video inspired alot of cretivity for me ty so much
So happy to hear!
Thank you for this! Tried finding alot of videos on making molds and yours was the only with valuable info thank you!
We're glad it was helpful!
Thank you i love you!!! 🙌🏾❤️🙌🏾
Hi, thanks for video. Please suggest what glue should I use for pieces to stick the ground and is easy later on to remove after mold is ready.
I love the Legos option, genius!

The right mold box is important, especially when using materials pricey materials.
Foil tape is interesting for little bookmark-thin items

That's super interesting!! You really can use anything, can't you 😂
@@AlumiliteCorporation well not everything. :p resin sticks to a bunch of materials. HDPE is my favorite and never sticks.
I use PVC Pipe up to 4" and can cut with simple saws. I have used disposable aluminum pans like for cooking a cake.
Great info in this video, but also this guy is awesome on camera. Well done! Kept me entertained while learning. Kudos.
You can add clear plastic acrylic sheet to make box for see through. It will helpful. Good trick. Thanks for your video. It was great.
What?
I have totally used that Lego trick! I also save any of those little plastic applesauce cups since most of the molds I make are small
Really helpful, thank you!!
How about a model wich does not have a flat back? maybe it has a really rounded back? Would you need to do a 2 part mold?
Thanks great ideas. Appreciate the effort on making this. I'll try the HVAC tape
Great video!! How long does the finished alumilite mold last? Does it deform overtime?
After you've made so many molds, what do you do to label them so you know which one it is? Does sharpie write on it and stay?
Thanks! Making a small mold now

@@AlumiliteCorporation Turns out that humidity and water in my compressor were the culprits. Thanks.
Do you need to use mold release with any or all of these?
Yes!
Can you use a PVC tube to make a cylindrical mold or would you end up with cure inhibition from your silicone?
Great great insight there. Thanks
I'm trying my hand at my first... Second... Ever casting project and am using a peanut butter container I cut the top and bottom off of lol.
Wow so helpfull
Do you have a video on cleaning up the new mold to the first cast in it?
Not yet, but it's definitely something we're looking into!
You can use a two liter bottle cut off, split on one side with tape on the inside.
That's an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing!
Good jobs thanks I am from Pakistan
Thanks for watching!
Thanks a big help.
Have a video of how waste less silicone? In my country is a little expensive, not sure about if same price in USA

Maybe plastic storage bins for larger project...?
The election signs that candidates leave in your yard make great molds and are free. Love your videos.
Can I use a silicone mold as a mold box for this silicone rubber?
No, silicone sticks to silicone
Good content
Thanks Bob, glad you think so!
Just wondering, if the mold when it is finished, should feel tacky? Is that normal?

How can I make a mold out of a flat pic that I would like to make a bit thicker?
Great advice!
Been looking at the new Amazing Mold Maker silicone to possibly make some small projects so this video was perfect timing.

Glad it was helpful! Reach out if you have any questions :)
Am I going to encounter problems if I add the mold maker on top of the dried product? Ran out of the product mid session
Yes! Silicone only sticks to silicone so they should adhere perfectly together!
@@AlumiliteCorporation thank you so much!
CARDBOARD from juice box or milk (with foil)
Have you tried using pieces of a cardboard box to make a mold box before?
Tuck tape vs. Shipping tape..... Are they interchangeable?
Great question! The short answer is it depends. The goal is to use a tape that has a plastic-like surface so that the epoxy resin doesn't stick to it!
anyone know if the legos work for resin??? or does the resin stick too much?
Resin will stick to the legos!! Silicone doesn't which is why you can use it as a mold box.
