But Nike wasn't as big as Converse or Adidas at the time and those companies were offering $$ to Magic to sign with them whereas Nike could only offer him stock. Yes, stock in Nike. Being a huge Celtics fan since 1960, there is no doubt at all that bird and magic saved the NBA! They brought the skill and majesty to the game that others before them hadn’t done yet. They also brought the diversity to the game and in the fact that one was white and one was black and they both played like every game was there last! I think it brought people together watch the game and who played the game. Have no doubt that they were very prominent and lifting up the NBA

Stern is on record saying how Magic and Bird saved a league that wasn't far from folding because of being labeled a "thug" league and from drug abuse. The Lakers/Celtics rivalry made people want to watch the NBA again and especially watch those teams play. Then Jordan came behind them and took the game global by building off the foundation that they laid. These LeBron followers want to use individual stats as his claim to being the G.O.A.T and in other leagues that method would definitely hold some water. But in this case what Magic and Bird did with the foundation they laid out for Jordan to build on can't be measured. It can't be broken down to a stat or a legendary type of year. Without the 1979 draft that included 2 of the best to ever play we wouldn't have the league that we do now.

CBS bought the rights to the NBA games. They would broadcast double headers whoever Boston was playing followed by whoever LA was playing and then the big events, Boston vs LA. That is what brought people into the seats, the endorsements, and money. I worked at an auto assembly plant with a guy who had graduated from North Carolina, was a 3rd round draft pick, and played 3 years in the NBA during the 70's. He never made over $30,000 a year. The 3 of them started working on their game together during the OFF-SEASON.
THEY ARE THE ONES THAT RAISED THE OFF-SEASON PLAYER DEVELOPMENT BAR.
NBA PLAYERS SCRAMBLED TO BE INCLUDED IN THEIR SUMMER "TOURS", WHERE PLAYERS ADDED NEW MOVES TO THEIR BAG.
MAGIC, MARK, AND ISIAH BECAME (KINDA) KNOWN AS "THE THREE AMIGOS" and they SET THE NEW STANDARD wherein players became expected to learn new moves over the summer.
Nowadays tho, it's understood by ELITE FANS that IMPROVING THE MOVES YOU ALREADY HAVE CAN BE BETTER THAN ADDING NEW MOVES.

Magic and Bird and the Lakers/Celtics Rivalery saved the NBA. The league was about to collapse of drug scandals and financial issues.
Honorable mentions to Wilt and Bill who made NBA a Live TV event.

The irony of two of the highest basketball IQ players to save a league and watch it turn into a long range, bad shot selection contest.

Well Charles is right & wrong. Wilt & Russell probably saved the league before Magic & Larry resaved it.

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird save the league. They are the reason these players make the salaries that they are making today. That is a fact. Before Magic and Bird you could sit Court side for 15 dollars.
