WALK IN FREEZER NOT WORKING

- This was a call on a walk in freezer that was not working properly, I found that the unit was iced up but it was only the top half of the evaporator coil, I diagnosed a bad txv based off of the ice pattern and an extremely high superheat. I replaced the txv along with some door hinges and the unit is now working properly.

I have found to braze those fittings that have the ability to fall off , easier to braze if I first squeeze the fitting, while on the pipe, just barely enough to get out of round ( and I mean barely, where its almost impossible to see with naked eye) then turning the fitting half a turn so it binds and can not fall off. Old pipefitters trick.
I did a time comparison on my guys and me trying to defrost with the fans an motors in place compared to removed. We gained an average 30 minutes removing the fans and motors. And it also cost me 3 motors by not removing them!
Love your videos and that fact that you are honest person and are thorough when diagnosing a repair. BTW, tell 'em to make shakes with the drippy soft serve, lol.
When I have to insulate a suction line and it is cut loose from the coil I slip the armaflex on line and compress it and hold it in place with a tubing cutter. That way you have no seams and potential for leaks. Also it looks clean.

I find when unsweating I grab the pipe to be removed when i see the solder shine or start melting I find it speeds up the heat transfer to the solder, by holding early the pliers absorb a lot of heat, especially in confined places. you will half the time.great job master.

Good repair! Had same issue this week and order the same parts. Unfortunately the repair has to be quoted and approved before I do it.
It would be so smart if they used a TEV where the head could be replaced. The Carrier slab coil units have so many of those valves failing, and they are such a pain to replace them. It's always during the hottest week of the year when they approve the work, too. On a Lennox L series, I can just change the head and clean the rod, and done!
I usually valve off the liquid line service valve so you can still monitor high side pressure on the receiver. Just winging that out there to ya. Great videos, Great work ethic!

Difficult repair... I can see that was not a easy one. Good to see you going the extra mile and redoing that suction line and the solenoid. Most techs would look at that and not redo.. I feel similar on installs and repairs that I do.. Try and do extra work to give yourself a higher percentage of first time success which saves time and stress and saves customer money.

Dan D. I think using steam over hot water will be more economical in both power and water. I used it for years. Incidentally it was shown to me by my son, also in the trade. You never stop learning.
Brilliant video and explained like a pro.👍One thing I noticed is that why is the wiring all over the place on the outdoor units. Here in the uk I always run cables in copex or use SY cable which is like a flexible armoured cable and not easy to chew by mice & rats...

Funny enough me being someone that lives in the north, i kind of hate working in a walk in freezer. I'd rather do medium temp all day long haha. It amazes me at how long some of these jobs can take but to be expected.
I've had more emerson TXV vs all others over the years fail. They stink cause you cannot rebuild them. At this time sporland is all I use and always have great results. Different cartridges make the magic. Chris have them empty out the shelves..work smarter and safer. Be safe out there!

Should have a trap on SL, that's why the oil in SL, no P trap, to increase velosity and carry oil up the SL. Heard you say 8 to 10 degrees superheat, for freezer ? thats a bit high. And please make sure you have proper ventilation when using a open flame inside any closed Walkin's." Phosgene gas " very deadly. I realize you were working in difficult circumstances, been there many times. Very Good job, well done Chris
8-12 is perfect for both super heat an subcool you don't want any higher than that

You can use your tubing cutters to hold the pipe still when brazing like you were. It also adds weight to keep the pipe from falling.

Can you please do a short video on how to install the bulb clamps? I have seen many seasoned techs that can not do them properly, either they are loose or just zip tied.
That defrost pattern would make me initially suspect incomplete defrosting(assuming the element is on the bottom of the coil). Curious why you didn’t do down that route at all?
I wonder if just changing the piece of copper for the Suction line and reattaching the sensing bulb would have had a better result on the evaporator? Just for giggles to confirm if txv is bad.
i use to keep a old filter and sight glass and use them for welding the tubing holding it all together i got tired of caring it around so i just made up a bypass tube for welding it up
What do you say when the facility staff comes in and acts like there's a problem with the flame if they see this process while your working?

@@georgephillips6521 yes they will. The secret is that when it's originally made they flash freeze it to give it a "light" and "creamy" texture. (both myself and my Grandfather worked in dairy. Me with cows and my Grandfather at Bordens where he retired. )

The back of that coil looked like it frosted up pretty quick. Was there a lot of moisture in there? I'm assuming that's why you fixed the door

When I was working I would defrost an iced up evaporator with a domestic steam wallpaper stripper steam would condense on the ice so no mess and was quick.
would u say its quicker than using plain old hot water from a garden hose? or some what the same? i want to try ur idea, sounds good

For which one's faster, I looked at thermodynamics. It doesn't look good for the steam wallpaper stripper.
To melt ice, you need energy, not temperature. A gallon of hot water carries less energy than that same gallon of water turned to steam at 212F, sure, but that steam will now take up 106.5 gallons of space. Steam is a lot less dense, meaning it takes longer to deliver it assuming the same flow rate as the hot water hose.
So with those assumptions, the hot water hose carries higher thermal energy per second into the ice (energy per unit time is power, so we could simply say that the hose carries higher thermal power).
Also, last time I checked a steam wallpaper stripper runs off a standard 15A 125V circuit, so you can only get a max of 1875W of heat into the steam, whereas the water heater the hot water hose is connected to might run off gas (lotsa power) or a 40A 240V circuit (9600W), so even if you "run out of hot water" you're still delivering AT LEAST 9600w of heat into that ice using the hot water hose.
I don't really need to do the math to know that I'm right, simply because a pound of steam takes up so much more room than a pound of water.
This means that the hot water hose is better in both respects, but feel free to use the steam wallpaper stripper if you have a restricted drain or are getting paid by the hour.

also, have u ever poured water onto a ice up coil in a freezer were it sticks out futher than the drain pan? using a hose, it pours onto the floor. using buckets kinda work, but it will freeze to the floor and u have to use a small steam of water, but of course u know that? depending how bad it is of course

Installers should reduce the size of a vertical portion of a suction line to increase refrigerant velocity for proper oil return so it wont sit at the evap.
When brazing inside walkin box n some have sprinkler systems do u need to shut them off b4 brazing ?
No P-trap on that suction line ?

Hey Chris, I’ve noticed and commented that some of the jobs you are on do not have pee traps at the evap coil. I’m betting your oil issue is what caused the txv failure. There should have been a trap on that system. Furthermore, since you were already removing the boogered section of suction line for the bulb - you should have installed a trap! You still wouldva needed a place for the bulb but heck since you were doing all that work anyhow, why not add the additional piping and do it right. Just curious...love your videos and watch them all.

because than when you have to change the drier again you need another csg, more or less a personal preference.

Just curious on those flare adapters that you brazed on, are those actually good flares from the manufacturer? I never trust manufacturer flares on line sets for ductless units, you can always count at least one bad flare.

Have you every used a turbo torch? I prefer them as you only need an acetylene tank. I find it works well for Residential HVAC.

D W Oil trap usually on to of box. At least that’s how I’ve always done it. That way keep as little piping down below as possible.

Chris. You ever seen a walk in freezer where the time clock is mounted in the walk in. I recently went to a new call where this is the case. My question to you is, is this acceptable. I've never seen one like this.

It’s been running like that for a good while, see it all the time. A lot of the customers I see keep theirs also when they have an issue with the w/I freezer.

Shawn Price For oxy torches there’s really only 2 sizes small and large. Small for 1/4 to to 7/8’s large for 1” and up.
There are plenty of sizes. I believe they range from 4-10. They also make dual tips. Used to braze 3/16” to 8” copper.

Does that solder you use already have flux? I’ve never seen you use any flux paste before when soldering. Just wondering. :)
No flux needed because it is 15% silfos on copper to copper just clean the metals and apply heat. If I am working on dissimilar metals than I will use 56% silver solder with a silver paste flux
Ever try using 6? I find it flows much easier without needing as much heat.
I am personally in electronics technician so most of the time flux is needed so we don’t burn the board since it aids in more efficient heat transfer without needing as much heat. I wasn’t aware that that was actually possible for soldering pipe. But then again I’m not an HVACR technician yet. If all else fails I’ll probably be looking into getting into the field. I do know a bit about it and more so thanks to your videos. so who knows?

not sure if you actually paying attention the coil was still freezing the same way 30:22 txv didn't fix the problem
At 30:22 I said it looks good and had an even frost pattern vs when i got there it was only frosting up on the top. The coil was not frosting the same way, these walk in freezers are expected to frost up like it did at the end of the video especially under the load it was trying to cool down

All that oil is from no oil return trap problem.😵
Had a similar icing up on 404a freezer. I added defrosts problem solved.
