    Kholat comes from "Kholat Syakhl" which means "dead mountain." However, Kholat also means "meager" So the name refers to how little game is found on the mountain for the native hunters.
    So the name does have meaning. Meager. As in meager gameplay. Boosh!

    "Let's make an ultra-realistic map and then make it impossible for players to jump or climb over a 30 cm obstacle" seems to be a design guideline in a lot of recent games.

    I kinda liked the wandering aimlessly around in a snow storm part, not because it's interesting gameplay or anything, but because it made it easier for me to clean my screen.

      Reece113 See in dark souls, or amnesia, you were actively fighting bad guys, exploring well crafted yet manageable spaces, solving puzzles. The thing is the bits of notes that told story were just that; notes on the ground you could pick up or leave and keep doing your thing.
      This game just makes it the only central focus.

    • @anthonyjensen8347
      @anthonyjensen8347 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A minimalist style of story telling can be quite effective, and is generally quite difficult to get a specific story across using it. From Software utilized the minimalist tendency of ambiguity as a driving mechanic of the story; they made a weakness in the style a strength of the overall narrative, and Dark Souls was ultimately better off with that. Everything in Dark Souls has a very specific purpose in this instance. Nothing was put in simply to put it in. The decorations, the way things move and interact, item drops, and the item descriptions all serve to construct and support the narrative.
      Dark Souls' (Dark Souls's? It looks wrong both ways) story isn't really all that complicated, when you piece it together. In fact, it's quite a simple story. What makes it intriguing is the way the story is ultimately interpreted, because the ambiguity serves a vital part of the storytelling. It's a game where you are treated like an adult; very few things are given to you explicitly, so you are left to find them out for yourself. In looking for them, you start to gain more and more information, but it's not necessarily in the right order, nor is it always remotely specific. It's the rush I imagine archaeologists have when they are unearthing tombs and the like; here is ground that has not seen people for thousands of years. Dark Souls has that same principle. You are an archaeologist trying to find the answers to a long-lost story, and the your imagination has a huge role in constructing it. I'd argue that this is where a lot of indie devs fail.
      If you want to make a good minimalistic story, but still have the game be story driven, there has to be more to go on than slips of paper. The world has to effectively be the story. The world and story that the devs of Kholat picked are not without merit; there is a huge amount of potential with the setting and story, and I'm honestly sad to see it go to waste like this. But where they fail is linking the two together in a significant way. Like you said, the world is just empty, and things are scattered without rhyme or reason. They almost exist as separate entities, which only serves to make both of them fail. They are simply ignorant of the rules of the narrative style, and I think the point of them failing is the presence of the ghost enemies. They don't really serve the world or the gameplay all that much. They exist as roadblocks. That's not to say enemies = bad for story, but the way they were worked into Kholat was honestly terrible.
      Kholat probably would've worked a lot better if the gameplay had been more along the lines of The Long Dark; you're trying to find out what happened to the five hikers, while you're trying to stay alive because of a brutal environment. Sure, you can have the supernatural, but make it more background stuff. Like, shadows moving in the corner of your eye, a few sounds just at the edge of hearing, and dim lights far from you. The world loses weight because it's just scenery, and the supernatural loses weight because it just isn't all that scary when it's pushed in your face. They don't really serve each other. Make the environment something you have to worry about, and it serves to push the hiker narrative more. You are trying to avoid repeating their mistakes, without knowing what those mistakes were. The supernatural can work as the antagonistic force, but don't let the player realize that fifteen minutes into the game.
      TLDR: Minimalistic stories are difficult to do well, and a lot indie devs generally want to have profound stories without having the knowledge of how gameplay and story interact, and making the ambiguity of the story worth keeping. They give you too much information, and it ultimately fails. On top of that, the gameplay they frequently have makes it tedious to play.

    • @tirsden
      @tirsden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      SinisterExaggerator I think they're trying to cash in on the sort of fame games like Amnesia got, but the problem is that a game like Kholat lacks the story, atmosphere, etc of Amnesia and other games that got it right. Knocking off mechanics will only get devs so far, the real heart of a game is in the writing and feel. Unfortunately we see this kind of bad knock-off everywhere, not just games, so expect it to be a trend to continue... the only way we can discourage it is by not supporting it.

    • @ProfNutButters
      @ProfNutButters 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tirsden
      I think you have a good point about cashing in on the success of other games although I think Kholat does develop a interesting cold, frozen and isolated atmosphere very nicely but it just comes across as pretty backdrop to some very basic mechanics which seems to involve collecting scattered bits of text and dodging your stalker type monster a lot like Slenderman which i didn't like either but at least that game was free. While the same might be said for something like Amnesia had some intelligent AI to make it scary and interesting mechanics.
      However even if Kholat had a good story i dislike having to stop read it by collecting scattered notes around the world as it disengages the immersion which is usually very important to a good horror game.
      Quite often i watch some TH-cam personality play something (Total Biscuit usually a good buyers guide) I am not sure on before i would even think about buying it. Voting with your wallet is usually the best way of discouraging a game.

      SinisterExaggerator i mean this game has some neat ideas. The idea of using a map and compass really makes a player appreciate the modern miracle that is GPS, and having to use land marks to get an idea of direction is fun. I think it just comes down to the map being to bloody big. Not to mention that you go some way you think is east and turns out its north ends up with players uninterested and bored.

    I think that an issue with this game, which it has in common with a lot of recent "horror" games, is that it doesn't really give you a compelling reason to give a shit.
    You're just dropped smack dab in the middle of nowhere and "spooky" things happen and the game just goes "You figure it out". No game! Give me a hook, give me some reason for why I'm there and why I should care. A static opening narration just doesn't cut it.
    Oh, and try not to kill me the second I find even a hint at intrigue because that just takes me straight out of the experience. There's a difference between establishing a threat (Psst, do it less than 10 minutes from the last save point - Especially if you need to kill the player to do it) and undoing all progress made just straight out of nowhere.
    That fog there was bullshit, because at no point did the game establish that fog = bad. Are we to assume that orange things are bad? Well, that's undermined by those orange glowing footsteps earlier not killing us right away, isn't it? But hey, as far as a 2D screen can portray, fairly accurate.

    So if this is about the Dyatlov Pass incident, in which all 10 victims were Russian, why are the voiceovers for the notes in British accents? Could they not find or afford eastern-European voice actors (or decent fakes, we are talking about fucking voice actors) or is this like when people always put on English accents to play ancient Romans? Fuck it, call me down to the sound booth with a Slim-Jim and a can of Dr. Pepper and I'll give you my best Comrade Ivan.

      ***** Having accents displays their correct nationality without needing subtitles in order to understand them. That's just me though, it adds some character to the game when done correctly. That's one of the reasons I love Assassin's Creed 2 so much, their Italian accents were lovely to listen too and didn't necessarily feel out of place.

    • @VecheslavNovikov
      @VecheslavNovikov 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** unless there's a generic English language, people will recognise the accent as being from a region that is not the same as where the game takes place. Having them do Russian accents would sort of make it feel like they're speaking Russian but we can understand them for some reason, and won't invoke a sense that they're foreigners in their own land. Accent matters for atmosphere.

    Sean Bean even dies in voiceovers, because that's his thing. He died in Oblivion. Anyone who does not make Sean Bean die in a creative work is an amateur. One must tease the idea of the death of Sean Bean multiple times and then have him die in a significant and meaningful way. For instance, he turned into a fucking dragon in Oblivion and saved the world.

    • @FurnaxIkki
      @FurnaxIkki 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheGunMentor Only played DeS and DS1, and I consider DeS both harder and not as satisfying as DS1. Not enough variety to levels, enemies, weapons, or bosses (though there are a few gems there still) and World Tendency is a fucking bitch that just never stops screwing you over. Upgrading gear is a lot more difficult too (good luck with those Pure Bladestones!), shops sell items at prohibitively high costs, and you simultaneously get fewer souls from enemies and leveling up costs more, and Stones of Ephemeral Eyes -the Humanity equivalent- are rarer than pieces of the True Cross.
      That said, nothing in Dark Souls made me as depressed as talking to Astrea after killing Garl Vinland. Nothing.

    Goku and Superman both can fly unaided, have super speed, super strength, and super toughness (the degree of difference between the two will start a nerd war, so I won't bother bringing it up).
    Superman can shoot heat vision from his eyes, see microscopically and has telescope vision. Depending on the source, he can also travel unaided through outer space. He also doesn't NEED to eat, as he is powered by a yellow sun. A BLUE sun makes all of his powers even stronger. He doesn't get any power from a red sun though, meaning eventually he'll lose his powers until he'll get under a yellow sun. He also has the Kryptonite weakness and magic can pass through his toughness easily.
    Goku can shoot lasers from his hands (and his feet once), teleport anywhere in the universe literally instantly, gets exponentially stronger every time he is beaten to NEAR death, and can transform into similiar forms that give you anywhere from 50 times to 400 times you current power.

    • @Will.P.Wareing
      @Will.P.Wareing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GSSAGE7 Unrelated, but what the fuck happened to the senzu beans? Why did they stop eating senzu beans? They should have made senzu bean chili, but no. No more senzu beans. Also, Goku did a super saiyan spirit bomb ONCE in Super Android 13, I think the movie was called, and then it was never brought up again. Continuity errors. Blarg. *shakes fist*

    • @GSSAGE7
      @GSSAGE7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bodalla Gaming Senzu beans don't come up much because Yajarobi keeps eating them all. Yes, really. That's why they frequently only come up with a handful. That and the fact that they take a long time to grow anywhere.
      Also, movies aren't canon. If there's any continuity errors, assume anything with Toriyama directly involved is right. So Goku can't use the spirit bomb as a Super Sayain.

    • @Will.P.Wareing
      @Will.P.Wareing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respect your insight. However, super sayain spirit bomb is an amazing concept. It was like a ball of hellfire and death. He basically threw a sun at them. At a time when I was really starting to value the other characters higher than Goku, Goku showed just how much of a badass he still was. So even though it wasn't canon, it redeemed Goku as the amazing character fans originally fell in love with.

    • @GSSAGE7
      @GSSAGE7 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bodalla Gaming You have to remember, a major part of the Spirit Bomb was that you had to be pure of heart to use it. And the Super Sayain transformation taints you, to the point that you aren't pure of heart anymore.

    It's shockingly easy to get a number of high profile actors on the cheap, really. You just have the project set up and ready to go, you have the cash in hand, and you ask. Reason being, most big productions ask you on and then it's months or even years before it happens, so the immediate kind of approach is attractive to professionals. Bill Drummond of the KLF almost got Yoko Ono to appear in a twelve hour rock opera based on The Illuminatus books way back when, except she'd just had a child. He just looked her up and called her, was the approach. Uwe Boll also scores good talent using this approach.
    As well, you'd be shocked by the level of talent that will respond to a simple ad in a trade paper, even when you stress it's low budget.
