I think Henry's bike started good then went south from there, Henry's bike is not an upgrade but a downgrade. There are more budget friendly upgrade that logically make sense, like the damper upgrade, galfer brake pads & rotors with even make it better, or even for a PNW dropper. Can you guys do a redo with a proper budget upgrade bike? I feel bad for Henry. We love Henry from this side of town!

Oh, and did I mention, this Fox™™™™™™ fork performs so well!"
Yeah... that wouldn't sit well. Don't rely on sponsored TH-camrs for anything Smart Budget, go watch someone like Worldwide Cyc, KevCentral or hardtail party for more unbiased stuff unlike this sponsor-run poor viewership crap by PB...( I'm appalled really, I gained zero insight from this video series lol ).
Sponsors have a monopoly over what can be said and what can be placed alongside their own products - and even then, online shops like Jenson will also have priority for their bigger clients (for e.g Fox), and Fox themselves would have business arrangements and product placement rules that wouldn't allow for example, Ohlins, to sit alongside their stuff. So it passes down from there to Jenson and then to PB. It's just PR shit really, and is why you go to your local bike shop and ask the big kind dude behind the workstation on part tips or bike advice.
On the other hand, PB missed the ball with the potential to save this series, it could have been a "Budget Broke Guy vs Industry Standard Guy" kind of series, and those Chinese parts wouldn't be that bad in retrospect. For someone coming from a department store 100$ bike, the Budget parts would have put a smile on anyone's face. But PB made it look like they are worthless pieces of junk. Terrible portrayal to the community.

@Pinkbike - I think a variation on this would actually be pretty awesome. Have multiple hosts with a similar budget come up with what they feel is the 'best' answer, and let them each ride each other's bike. Each gets a vote for a bike that isn't theirs, and we get to learn about why those choices make more sense. I think that can be quite an interesting series, and let the team highlight why they care about what they do.

I'm not surprised by the outcome, but it's the first series, taking the extreme path sets them up better to explore the goldilocks zone in future episodes and to check out some lesser known/respected brands. Solid project all around and I'm looking forward to more capably spec'd builds in future seasons.

    • @frankthetankricard

It's not the fact that they put on bad parts. That is indeed an interesting route to explore. The problem came from the fact that it's not what they said they will be doing.
Don't call it budget upgrades if:
      A) You don't have a budget. Going as cheap as you can is not what a budget means. It's setting a spending limit and finding the best performing combination of parts within that limit.
      B) Your new parts are downgrades. The title suggest they verified that the new parts are indeed an upgrade before filming the video which is not the case.
Either way the videos were not bad at all, just badly mistitled. But I'm still a little baffled they didn't include the original parts after a full service to show that all the upgrades on both bikes were a waste of money for the average rider.

@@brandonreimer184 They should have called the series off once the first video went out and just archived it. It just ruined everyone's perception of PB, and shows how their TH-cam platform is just skewed towards sponsor placement and a blunt, useless directive. This entire series was not informercial, it merely served the purpose of entertainment and nothing else, at the expense of the presenters, crew and cash that could have gone to better use.

good shoot out and something very important came out of your series, brakes.
Im coming from background of racing pro master DH racing for RedBull / Ironhorse from 1997 - 2007. I raced all over the US and then every year Canada or Europe for masters worlds, so I saw every possible ugly track condition.
I was there for not only for DH full suspension evolution, I was part of the DH brake evolution from the early magura hydraulic cantis then discs like formula, hayes, hope, sram and maybe some I dont remember. LOL or dont want to remember!
I was there for the evolution of DH tires and tire tech . I was lucky enough to ride for IRC (missles), then Michelin then finally Maxxis during those years.
Frame withstanding..... Brakes, suspension and tires each were amazing evolution during those golden years and each season added to game changing racing.
Without a doubt I would say out of those 3 things... the best Brakes possible is and was the true game changer and made possible significantly faster race times especially when wet rocks, roots and mud are thrown in.
As was mentioned by you ...the later you can brake for less time on the brakes....the faster your lap times are....less time on the brakes= faster!
    Cheers

I'm surprised you guys didn't go over Hubs!
For about a year I been riding a GX build Ripmo. Recently I decided to buy a XT build Ripmo and sold the other one. To me, despite having Carbon wheels now, the most significant difference is hub engagement ( I went from Ibis stock hubs to I9 hydras). The increased engagement is a game changer! It's much easier in climbing and techy sections. Do you need I9s? Probably not. However, having hubs that have good engagement are worth having.

Questions that come to mind about Henry’s brakes.
    1. Are the brake cylinders or calipers leaking and not allowing full pressure to the pads?
    2. Have the brakes been bled?
    3. Are the pads contaminated?
It seems to me a bit inconceivable that a braking system that is sealed, properly bled and otherwise in a good state wouldn’t be able to stop a bike. Larger rotors, better pads, multi piston calipers, etc WILL help to stop faster with less fade in theory but shouldn’t be mandatory for light riding. The budget brakes should be analyzed and given a fair shot but as an armchair quarterback and professional mechanic…I would say there are other issues at play here!

Again - I didn't upgrade anything and when I felt ready I bought a new $4000 Deore, 170mm ZEB enduro bike - I'll ride more it before I figure anything needs changing.

They let their mental state determine reliability. Remember, they had no failures. And every time they said something negative, it was followed with "we felt like" never actually being an issue but fear of it being an issue. Even the tires which I agree would be scary. But no true failure. Remove those logos and put decent tires on the 2 bikes, and I assume you they will ride damn near equal.
2300$ forks? 900$ breaks? 250$ seat?. Slightly better runs for 3-4x the money. And there low expectations made for pre shit runs.

Great series. A lot of comments around the budget bike components being a bad choice, and I agree it was a step back in some areas, but it did have to over exaggerate what budget means to really show the areas that it is worth spending a little more. Someone mentioned a 'smart' budget build and I agree, this could be a great idea. I have done similar on my bike, second hand forks, new 4 pot deore brakes, new giant 100mm dropper, and they can make a step in a good direction. how about a standard reign or Trance that you can buy off the shelf today (top spec) vs a frame only with control tyres and then do 'smart' budget upgrades eg deore or microshift etc

  • @benjy288
    @benjy288 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You can tweak lower end suspension to improve its performance, it just takes a bit of time and experimentation, for example I used to have a lyric with the charger 2 damper, my current bike has a revelation with the motion control damper, the main problem with the motion control damper was dealing with fast braking bumps, so I changed the damper oil to a 2.5 weight rockshox oil (stock was 5 weight), added an extra 5psi to the air spring, and now it feels pretty much like my old lyric.

Loved the series put alot in perspective on how far technically has come, only thing that I would change for season two, Henry is a world Cup mechanic so instead of "upgrading" parts, why not service them instead. Servicing the fork, maybe adding a new damper and air piston could of been a better avenue, new pads and service the brakes would of been cheaper. I got a budget set of magura brakes set for about £90 so as Henry mentioned safety is a big factor might be a better idea going forward.

I'd like to see a version of this with the cheapest reputable option. That would exclude things like Mike Bear tires and weird unknown brakes and instead pick for budget reliable components. You could test for this by making sure that you have at least one person who would vouch for the product at Pinkbike or maybe within your group of riding buddies.
Then you'd see more components like the Microshift group set which is budget, but reportedly works pretty darn well.

While I agree a smart budget category would have bee a nice addition to this season, I'm assuming they aren't going to redo the same thing with a smart budget build. Maybe for season 2 they should have a entry level build spec (say from a $2500 - $3500 full suspension trail bike build) vs a spec that a lot of people think is the sweet spot - $4500 to $6500 range. What you get for spending 2 to 3 times more would be more practical and informative than something that cost 10 times more. Maybe bring back the first season budget and baller builds at the end for a final comparison of timed runs.
