What a lovely clip of a lovely man. I visited Wenford Bridge a few times with Michaels great niece and met both Seth & Ara, sadly Michael had passed many years before.
80+ and still kicking! Sum up all those years and you end up with a lot of practicing. Michael Cardew, I salute you. Thank you for posting this video : ]
I WAS A STUDENT OF CARDEW!!!!! he was an "old stick in the mud". NO PUN INTENDED. a 'PROPER ENGLISHMAN" he was. very very DULL. as DULL AS FUCK in fact. AND YET.....an EXQUISITE craftsman!!! he could FORM a pot so FINELY. a GENIUS in that way..... AND YET... his "skills" as a "decorator" were a REPLICATION of African FEMALE designers. he was a POOR kiln designer which led to his FAILURE in his african COLONIAL adventures. his own POST African career was MIDDLING at best. he enjoyed a reputation as a LEACH acolyte AFTER his "african" period. he is NOW known as the "originator" of the ABUJA and Vumë potteries in AFRICA. he was not. he made use of the GENIUS WOMEN of ABUJA and Vumë to further his reputation as THE designer. he was not. THEY did it! TODAY abuja and Vumë pots are worth THOUSANDS of dollars PER POT! all this thanks to CARDEW....but MOSTLY to the talents of the great FEMALE pot designers of ABUJA/Vumë . he HELPED.....but these african WOMEN generate MILLIONS per year today in sales. THEY taught HIM!!!!! AND YET... HE was the "bwana"..... how VERY English!!!
This is an excerpt from a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation episode of "Hand and Eye" called "Glorious Mud". The narrator was the late Robin Hopper. Michael Cardew died a year after this.
