- dartsreviewcha... A review of the new Unicorn 2024 Contender Dartboard. This dartboard has doubles and trebles twice the size of a normal dartboard and the bull area is 25% bigger too. Is it the best dartboard for beginners?

A lot of people in the comments section here who clearly don’t understand who this board is aimed at. Hint: if you’re watching dart videos on TH-cam then this board isn’t for you.
Hint: if you type a comment just to bash other people and act like you're smarter than them, you're not😊
I know @tartan from the pub. Always drinking, no one is listening to him.
i have one of these, board is pretty good, but i do get alot of wire bounce outs.its amazing how good bristow and lowe were back in the day with round wires and smaller segments.people that say they only averaged 90 should try it! also hitting a single then a double without busting is dangerous on this board!
Yeah I think the board that came with the Target Arc cabinet had round wires and I got a crazy amount of bounce outs on that.
Bloody hell! It looks like it would almost be harder to hit a black or white segment! Professional review as always, Darren 👍
LOL I know :) Cheers! :)
Interesting concept. I agree its potential use is aimed at the (very) junior end of the age scale, or games/party night just for a bit of shits & giggles with family or friends who don't normally play darts.
Nevertheless, another informative review, thanks Darren 😀😀
Thanks mate, I think its one that will have a lot of differing opinions :)
Good board for a party or at the office. Looks nice! Grow the game. I wouldn't personally use it being a competition player as a normal board would suddenly appear hard to play.
Nice!
Quite like the idea of this. I guess would be more fun for players that just want have a laugh. Lovely bigger green segments Darren lol
Yeah more green is good 👍😜
The review I’ve been waiting for 🥳🥳🤩
😊👍
Has helped my 5 year old’s confidence. He had signs of Dartitis as he was trying to hard so this is highly recommended for beginners.
Feel they don’t know who the board is aimed at. Price is expensive for a “beginner” board, you can get a good quality dart board for not much more than that. I feel if it was £19.99 and came with beginner darts I’d get it but round wires, staples for £32 and still darts on top isn’t a great deal. But nice review and good to get a chance to see it!
Yeah I think you are right 👍
Be interesting to see if you could get a 9 darter, or how long it would take 🎯👍
I know I was going to try that but I don't think I will be able to play long enough to attempt it now with my dodgy elbow.
@@DartsReviewChannel throw left-hand or start again left-handed
@@BnGdarts lol don't think I will live long enough to get good left handed 😊
Are the trebs and dubs the same size as a soft tip board?
Depends on which type of soft tip board, if its the more common version then the soft tip boards are much bigger, if its the other version (forget the name) then they are roughly the same.
Seems like a fun board as you said. Looked like a 180 but not to be. Rest up Darren. 🎯 Happy darting 🎯
Cheers Vic 👍😊
I agree, this would be a good party board!
Reminds me of the board on Bullseye 😂😂😂 "I' d like a question on Spelling please, Jim"
I like the concept though
Can I have a P please Bob, oh wait, wrong show, 😜🤣
i really need this board for my collection hell yeah
I wonder how many started with an M.Y compressed paper board with the brass darts and the yellow and black target on the back complete with a hard wooden bull impenetrable by Whitlock points. £3.99 from Woolies.
Lol I had one of those 😂
Believe or not. Its still on my living room wall and I play it. I think it's 15 years old but it works fine. 😀👍🎯
@@tommy8058 Awesome! :) I think the dog ate mine
@@DartsReviewChannel haha. With paperboards it's seems to work. The dog shouldnt try this with Bristol Boards. 🐶😋🎯😂
It's a shame magnet barrel darts are not included in the supply to make the experience even more cheaty 😅
Lol 😜
Nice board - but would you think the winner in Bahrain throws on a board with... Littler segments...
roundwires - so rounded points as a recomendation?
For the algo.
The Littler the better maybe?
@@DartsReviewChannel I keep trying to make jokes/puns from his name... to avoid the obvious 'allo 'allo style one that my stupid brain wants me to type.
@@ryklatortuga4146lol I get it :)
The Problem that I see, is that the big single field is way smaller, so it's more likely to bust when you stand on 60 for example
Its possible :)
I have this board. Been playing 25+ years and a half decent player. I bought it mainly out of curiosity to see what I could do on it and my word it's an absolute blast. Can regularly go out in 15 darts or less and I have had one 9 darter so far. This board is also good for when you're non-dart player mates come round who want a quick game. It could be good for absolute beginners to build a bit of confidence but once they start to get to grips with the game they should definitely practise on a standard board. I like the concept of this board but it does have very limited applications. The quality of this board is absolute trash though. Not only are they round wires, they're thin bendy round wires. After one practise session I absolutely wrecked the wire around the treble 20, bent it all up and buried it in the sisal. Expect tons of bounce outs with this board! And the talking of the sisal, it is of poor quality. I've used my board for a total of about 6 hours and it looks absolutely battered, like I've had it for about 5 years! A shame because it is so much fun.
Great feedback, thanks 👍 I think it would have been better if they made it with a bladed type spider.
@@DartsReviewChannel yes totally. I wonder if they made it cheaply just to see the reaction, and if it does well maybe they'll bring out new, higher quality versions. Similar to those "trainer" boards with the thinner trebles and doubles. Plenty of manufacturers have brought those out over the years, maybe we'll see it with this type of board, especially with the recent boost in popularity of the sport and darts continues to draw in new audiences and people taking up the sport.
@@crooty9 Possibly, maybe they were not sure how the market might take it?
Yes, start with normal board. Why go through the leaning process to then have to relearn when you swap to a regulation board?
I think I am inclined to take that same stance, probably use the Contender more for fun and casual parties and such like :)
Would you have a recommendation for rear grippers ?
I’m fairly new to darts and enjoying it but found I’m a natural rear gripper who holds like I would a pen, (thumb and 2 fingers)
Prefer and torpedo shape i think. Fits nicer in the hand.
Any recommendations?
what weight and what kind of grip?
Hi, what set of darts would you recommend for a beginner as a 1st pair of darts? Would the darts corner gallant m1 or m2 be a good option as they are the ones I'm looking at?
Yeah they would be fine, check my video here on the kind of dart to be looking for: th-cam.com/video/UROdjGRcWPM/w-d-xo.html
Let's try this on the PDC Masters
LOL that would be fun! :)
Not a fan of this idea.. However huge thanks for The Winmau Launch vid pre Christmas!! I picked up The Iron Maiden Surround ( I caught a glimpse of it between frames)
Nice one 👍😊
Wow. Quite big double triple
It is good for training soft tip players, especially because of the noise of the dart hitting the plastic of the board.
Could be, the segments are even bigger than soft tips though! :)
Nice idea to encourage people who may get demoralised on a regular board but I can't stand stapling. So many more bounce outs caused by it.
I know, its amazing how much that happens! :)
I played pro darts 2024 (it's a mobile darts game) and i played this kind of board on the game
Maybe this would be good to build up confidence who suffers dartitus ...🤔
Yeah never thought of that one, might help 👍
That's really a dartboard for kids in my opinion. A good one to learn for them. But anyway good review Darren.
Yeah it's not for me 👍
I think this board is ONLY good for people/families who don’t ever want to get serious with playing darts and just like to very casually mess about with dart games here and there. BUT IF you are beginning and want to get serious with playing darts, this board will just cripple you if used from the start because when you finally switch to a real dartboard, you’ll be endlessly frustrated (it’s already frustrating enough) and will probably never get into having a good time with darts.
Yeah good point! :)
I'm very happy with my winmau blade 6 dual core
I don‘t think this really helps getting more confidence because the bigger doubles/triples mean that the singles get smaller. And is it there anything more frustrating than missing the single when you need it? 😜😂
Lol yeah it's a bit of an enigma 😊
To mutch... i love my champ.choice train Board with half size double and triple. But this Board with the monster tripple will give a lot 180 😊
It's good because your mates can beat you lol on it good board 👍
Yeah but you would be playing on same board too lol
I like the idea. It's a good Training Board for the single numbers, cause they are definitely harder to hit on this.🎯😂
😊👍
I’m really not sure. If you hit a 180 on here is it really a valid 180
Will I guess on that board only, same as soft tip board 180's :)
Rest up the shoulder Darren as I’m looking forward to the phase 6 noir review when you get around to it 🎯
Thanks, I will, I may not review them the same way, as already reviewed that model, might just do a close look etc will see :)
did you throw with both phase 6 sets to notice any diffirence in the feel of the darts at all or is it 100% looks ? wondering if maybe the black coating makes it feel diffirent than the phase 6 world champion edition? im a Gary anderson fan and i have 1 pair of noir s a pair of world championship 5 edition a pair of his code's and now his phase 6 but i dont wanna buy 2 same sets who just have a diffirent colour thats all :D.
@@kevinL-tv9rk I never tried the P6 Noir yet, but I just felt them, I think the darts feel pretty much the same as you just feel the rings more than the coating, but the parts were its smoother the coating just has a very slight dry feel to it.
I reckon this board would be good for beginners . I find that people who enjoy throwing a few darts do not have the confidence to go for trebles let alone doubles at the 'end game' stage . This automatically means they do not learn to think about the maths and potential paths to winning available on the board . The bigger segments on this board might help in encouraging newbies to think about using the dart better . Once beginners have learnt the advantages in at least trying to use the trebles , or bulls , though I think this type of board should be hidden away ! For serious players a board with smaller triples would be a better training device .... !
I was amazed when I visited my brother in London a few years back . We ended up in the East London pub , the Bow Bells in Bow , for a lunch break . The dart board there was a black and white affair with , if memory serves , black and white segments numbered either 5 , 10 , 15 or 20 only . So there would be multiples segments of each number around the board . Also , if memory serves , there was no treble ring , only the outside ring of doubles and the bull . I was told that games typically ended at 1000 points . The board might have been slightly wider too and I think the doubles a bit skinnier .
This local speciality board is one of maybe five found still in use around the country apparently , maybe worth a video Darren !
An older chap I know told me that around 1950 in Kent , West Malling actually , landlords would soak their pub dart boards over night in a bucket of water . These boards were cut from solid wood , a horizontal cut across the tree trunk , and the score areas were cut into the board . The over night soaking would allow the wood to expand to repair the dart point damage !
Definitely worth a video Darren , what do you think !
Yeah I know all about those boards, London Fives and yes they were often made of wood back then and its basically how we ended up with the boards we have today. First it was plasticine boards that did not need soaking but the smelt which is where Nodor came in, as in No odour and the rest as they say is history :)
good board to practice the grouping on the trebles, can be a big help if you like to work on the grouping, thanks for the review darren!greets from belgium ☺️👍👋👋
@@djdavid36 No problem! :)
☘️ thanks Darren 👍
Great review as usual Darren, but you are right what is the sense of that board anyways
Thanks mate, yeah not entirely sure, I am sure some will like it though
@@DartsReviewChannel agreed some definitely will like it
I've got this board great for family and freinds to play . Think it's easy as a dart player 🤔 wrong .
Off topic, but anybody else really despise the new darts corner website? Bring back the old one! This board might be good for the moral of beginners, hitting high scores ect. Some people probably give up because they get frustrated about how difficult darts can be.
Yeah it's not as good
high power alreet
High Powa! :)
@@DartsReviewChannel 😁🤣🤣
Twice as much scoring opportunities to make up for twice as many bounce outs.
😂
Does anyone know if the Winmau Vertex stand is in stock anywhere?
How, good vidéo. 🎯
👍💚😊
Would be good for under 13s who are learning the counting
Yeah I think its got some usefulness like that, but we still end up back to the same questions as in why not start with a normal board :)
@@DartsReviewChannel because you won't be hitting 3 figure out shots very often as a young player unless you are a prodigy
One question have u ever played some darts video games before?
@@waylandquiaoit3871 years ago I had
@@DartsReviewChannelHow long is it my friend?
@@waylandquiaoit3871 I think I played something on Xbox or Playstation probably 20 years ago
@@DartsReviewChannel Which darts game u played btw?
@@waylandquiaoit3871 not sure what it was
What a beauty😅
I would still score 26.....
😁
The Main Star would hit 9 darter on any board lol 🎯
He can with his tail!
Definitely NOT a good board for anyone other than those who just wanna dick about. I mean, staples in 2023 !! Be recomending wooden darts next 🙂
It’s rather like an American/Asian soft tip board! I suppose one should shoot from 8 ft… 😂
😂
This board is what the word "gimmick" was invented for...😉
Good review but pointless board if you’re over 10
Thanks, you may be right :)
Id still end up on double 1 lol
I dare someone play a DartConnect/online match against someone else with this board lmao
Lol I bet someone has 😂
@@DartsReviewChannel If true, I can imagine someone celebrating a 9-darter like as if they've beaten Luke Littler lmao
@@abzhuofficial 😂
We bought this for laugh. It really is terrible. Its like they had a bad batch of boards and had to do something with them.
LOL! :)
Mmmmm biscuits
Maybe for little kids
Its awful the best way to practice when just startingbis champions choice a couple of days on that put the original board up and its like throwing them into a bucket.
That's going to be a lot harder for a beginner than a normal board though
Not really my cup of tea
Not for me either 😊
