  • James O’Brien and LBC’s political editor Natasha Clark analyse this week's PMQs as Rishi Sunak faces Keir Starmer.
“Another stunning outing for Keir Starmer”
“I thought it was better than last week.”
“He went in hard on Rwanda and quite effectively”
    “Really ripping it to pieces.”
“This is why it’s rubbish. This is why it doesn’t work.”
    “The small print is terrible.”
“It makes it easy for Keir Starmer when these deals are so full of holes.”
    “There’s lots to go on.”
“He didn’t reach for the emergency Corbyn button, I think they’ve realised it doesn’t work.”
    “It’s working, isn’t it!”
“It does seem like he’s sharpened up his act.”

Sunak was yelling across the dispatch box that "Labour doesn't have a plan!" to tackle immigration. Let's say that's true for a moment. If the Conservatives plan to reduce immigration is to spend hundreds of millions of pounds to send 100 people to Rwanda, for them to send some back - then I think, genuinely, having no plan at all is a marked improvement.

Sunak's real assets are in a "blind trust". They have never been disclosed and are not on the MPs register of interests, and the Cabinet Office refuses to reveal who manages the trust. The public is entitled to know if a public servant has any possible conflict of interest.

Does anyone else find PMQs an exceedingly weird feature of our system?
Essentially two people hurling criticisms and insults at each other in the form of questions, those questions being completely ignored to return the favour. No fact checking, no discussion, plenty of "questions" but no answers. Then the partizan press takes away the "zingers" they liked as proof their guy or gal smashed the other. Why? What does anyone gain from this? Did it always used to be so ridiculous?

The media driven forgetfulness of society is what undermines it breesing the politcs we have. Starmer just a few weeks ago said Isreal had the right to cut off water, food and electricty to two million people. Now his PMQ performances are being celebrated - as if it is what matters. As if his fitness for office does not matter - just as long as the Tories are out.
If getting rid of the Tories is a blinkered existential issue - then so too will become what replaces it.

  • @cockneywhite

Not a fan of Keir Starmer as he is NOT a socialist and wont do anything to reverse the awful Tory policies, all we will get from his leadership is several years of things getting no worse but also no better, having said that he really has Sunaks number when it comes to pmq's.

What was blatantly obvious today was that Starmer's front bench was cringing at his performance. Anyone see a smile from his deputy or any reaction to the mention of Thatcher. He's become a laughing stock.

Starmer has given no indication that he wants the UK to have closer ties with Europe, or to rejoin the EU. I think he's a coward and should have nailed his colours to this mast some time ago.
I hope James is not becoming a Labour party cheerleader considering the state they left the UK after their last session in government. People have very short memories!
