    Kinda fitting that Roy's two most humiliating losses happened at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings.

      He was a great goalie that we face a lot in the playoffs and lost some and won some. Rival and hatred is what defined Avs v Wings in the late 90s/early 2000s

      GrassValleyGreg hall of famers aside, the Avs were coming off of a championship season. They were pretty damn good. It's not about how many players made it to the hall of fame its how you play as a team. The Wings and Avs were an evenly matched rivalry. You sound like a salty fanboy

      This game really really puts on display two things, Roy's falloff and haseks rise into the books. Roy was at this point known and was using HUGE pads, while hasek was known for the opposite, his leg pads in his early years barely came up that high at all. If you find pics you can see what i mean. I was a huge buffalo fan, and was going crazy during there 99 run. I bought a home sabres jersey that year, and i live on long island im an islander fan. But the sabres i love, there like new yorks forgotten team. But yeah man Roy was getting real lazy here, and huge pads are on display. Those Kohos were ugly to, the Bauer react 5's are to this day one of my favorite set of pads, they were expensive but good. Koho doesnt seem to make pads anymore, and bauer makes like the best pads or atleast top 3 still to this day. But yeah alot of people like the era of Roy, alot of trading sports cards have him rocking those giant Koho pads. But this was also during his decline. Roy was the reason there was a limit put on pad sizes i beleive, and it was sometime around this era.

Game 7 was on at the Hall in a back room, and I remember the pastor of her church coming over and giving updates to everyone when the Red Wings scored a goal, which was early and often in the first period. Brandon5495 As a Wings and UM fan, I have to agree with both of you somewhat. Wings/Avs and UM/Ohio isn't as great now, as it used to be. UM and Ohio were only both really good (top 5 ranking) at the same time in '97, '03 and '06, but most of the time, one was playing the spoiler role for the other.
      Wings/Avs, while even in '02 the rivalry was starting it's decay, was still a good rivalry, but nothing in comparison to the late '90's teams. Both were championship caliber teams, and the road to the Stanley Cup HAD to go through either Detroit or Colorado for the other to win, combine that with the bad blood from the Draper hit, the revenge on Lemieux and that fantastic March 26, 1997 (No Wings fan will EVER forget that date), and this was a rivalry just as good as UM/Ohio.
      Both rivalries were fantastic when they were relevant, which is why I can only agree with both of you. IMO both were equally amazing to watch as a sports fan.

      TUdaToken Me too & I'm a Leafs fan, a Wings-Leafs Stanley Cup Final would've been EPIC! But the Leafs were a banged-up team by the time the Hurricanes finished them off in 6; TOR had already been through a pair of 7-game battles vs the Islanders & Ottawa Senators & played hard vs Carolina but just simply ran out of gas. Carolina in their own right was a good tear themselves, eliminating New Jersey & Montreal in the 1st 2 rounds. But they were still no match for that powerhouse Red Wings team. :)

    • @ckendall67
      @ckendall67 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Les Moore And besides, I don't think anybody was beating that stacked Red Wings team in 2002. For nostalgic purposes, a Wings-Leafs Final would've been fun to watch....but the Wings were probably going to win anyway regardless of who they played. Might've been a blessing in disguise that the Leafs didn't get thrown to the wolves against that Wings team in 2002 maybe. ;-)

    • @ckendall67
      @ckendall67 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Les Moore I guess maybe it would've been interesting to see if actually could've matched up against the Wings, but I dunno, like we were saying earlier, the Leafs went through those earlier series vs the Islanders & Sens and it took a lot out of them by the time they made the conf. finals vs Carolina. If they couldn't get past the 'Canes then they certainly weren't going to beat the Wings, that's for sure. I always refer to those 2002 Wings as the 'Hall Of Fame Red Wings', because practically everyone on that team either is in the Hockey Hall Of Fame or will be inducted there at some point. Easily one of the greatest single-season NHL teams ever assembled. Once they added Hasek and Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille to their lineup before that season, the Wings were the heavy favorites to win the Cup & anything short of that would've been a colossal failure for that group.

      Ah. Don't feel bad. My brother surprised me with red wing tickets on my 35th birthday wearing #35 Jimmy Howard and they lost🙄😥😭 i even got a complete makeover with a new hair cut, curls, red streaks, my nails done with red tips AND I made a huge sign in bright red letters...even though they lost, best birthday& gift I ever got

      Certainly in my lifetime. I remember watching this and thinking it was a great bookend game. I remembered watching the Wings light up Roy in Montreal so badly it led to him getting traded to Colorado. Man, I miss those days.
