  • Managed to get the camera mounted onto right side of headset. Plenty of IMC, a bit of rain. Gusty winds out of the north, shoot the RNAV (GPS) RWY 1 into Lincoln Park, cancelling IFR with Caldwell Tower on the way in.

    I must say out of all the videos on the net of Lancair’s flying in real day to day flying you produce some of the best I’ve seen. I have learned so much from your content.
    thank you

      I thought Jim was the pilot's name. Did I screw that up? If so all I can say is, in the words of Texas Governor Rick Perry during the 2012 Republican primary season, "Oops!"

    Jim, I had someone do a very thorough inspection on the engine bay and we found a few things which could fix the cooling issues. When I first bought it, it wasn't as tough to keep it cool. Hopefully we'll get back to that point so I can do wide open throttle climbs from sea level (something I can't do right now).

    Another great IFR video thanks. Still hope to get my rating some time, but happy so far to fly VFR. I see you got your turn coordinator fixed :)

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll be much happier once you have the rating after cancelling a few trips due to a 1000ft celing that would take 60 seconds to climb through to VMC. :) Yep, turn coordinator in good shape now.

    Lovin the IFR... it all comes home watching you implement your great online IFR training.
    YOU SCARED ME ON THE TAKEOFF with the gear up so low & staying the runway heading and looking like you were no more than 50 feet off the deck....optical illusion I am sure.
    Thanks,
    chas

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx Chas. I stayed low and flat to build up speed to aid in cooling. It's a luxury I can afford with such a long runway and no obstructions at the end. Cleared the end of the runway at 150kias. Finished the climb with the #4CHT at around 420-430, which is still smoking hot. Imagine if I'd done a Vy climb...I'd be on fire.

      coma13794 Does the Lyco overheat easily in the Lancair?

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrStoneycool69 Yes, hence the acceleration to a cruise climb immediately after takeoff rather than a Vy climb.

    wow, I took the whole trip! even mentally flew the instruments with you for the entire "soup" portion. can I log that? lol. Funny, I actually was experiencing the same anxiety and butt puckering of the seriousness of flying in actual conditions. (private with 100hrs, fair about of hood time toward instrument, and a couple of hours of actual conditions during primary. thanks to a great instructor. Thanks for the cool vid! love the clean voice audio, but a little sterile. Coulda used a lil' purr from the ponies! great job! enjoyed it!

    Mr. Coma would love to fly with you I am a vfr pilot and fly vicariously through you . You do the things I can only dream of.. I have a lancair 320 and wish I was more comfortable in the cockpit . What advice can you give me and others wanting to learn. Thanks in advance, Steve

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very flattering Steve, but there's nothing special about my flying (really). This is just a standard IFR flight. I would be happy to offer some guidance, but first I'd need more specifics when you say you wish you were more comfortable. In watching this video, which elements seem to be out of your reach?

    Another question: I am really liking that head strap you are using for the gopro. What strap/mount are you using and how are you recording the audio. I always found the gopro a pain because of the lousy battery life on longer flights.

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      just using the mounts that came with the GoPro Silver package. Will try to get a picture of it. No straps involved. Am using the NFlightCam audio adapter: nflightcam.com/store/index.php/all/nflightcam-gopro-cockpit-kit.html

      correction, I think some of the mount came with The Frame mount that I'm using.

    What plane is that?...and why is it up in the air so fast but the climb rate is so slow...? Any way ... + 1 like from me...

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Willem P it's a Lancair 360 (the title of the video gives it away) :) I do very shallow climbs to keep the speed up and the cylinder head temperatures down. The plane has cooling issues, so climbing at 150kias is ideal. With just 180hp, something has to give...and the result is a pretty flat climb.

    • @willemp6432
      @willemp6432 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      coma13794 Thanx Coma...I`ll google the plane...your video is very cool.The camera placed on your head is ideal.You can feel and whatch your observation controlling the plane.cool,cool,cool.....
      ps .That was a bumpy ride you had there..I love flying..

    • @douglasmcintyre3297
      @douglasmcintyre3297 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Willem P Willy: The climb rate was at a lower value because he'd doing a cruise climb. That means climbing a speed somewhere between best rate of climb speed and normal cruise speed. I believe he mentioned climbing at about 150 knots IAS during one of his other videos. I hope that answers your question.

    As drone traffic increases... be careful to stay up at 800ft. as long as possible. I noticed you cruised in at 500ft. drifting to 450.... Drones can legally fly at 400 ft. outside the TCA.... give yourself some leeway.

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +brianminkc I was on the ILS if memory serves. Also, drones can't operate within 5nm of the airport. I wasn't at 500ft outside of the 5nm ring.

  • @VicariousAir

    Whoa brother... a little quick on gear up? or is that some type of optical illusions. I think you were at about 14" off the deck 4:39. maybe? 23 years ago, when I started to fly gear up was when you reached the point you wouldn't be able to set it back on the runway.

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I stay flat after takeoff, clean up the gear and accelerate until reaching 145kts (good climb speed that avoids cooling issues). Max gear extension speed is 125kts, so the gear has gotta go.

    • @VicariousAir
      @VicariousAir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coma13794 I get it. I've never flown a Lancair so I'm sure you know better than I. I just had to stop, rewind and have a second look because I've never seen anyone retract gear that close to the ground.

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, that's not enough time in the airplane. A sim at home helps a great deal, too. Properly configured, and with a realistic ATC environment, it's pretty much the same thought process as real world IFR flying.
