  • The Canna Lily plants have leaf damage caused by leaf rollers, slugs, or snails. I find one of the culprits on my Dwarf Pink Canna Lily. Some of the Canna Lilies are flowering and it's not summer yet. Shown in this video are the Pretoria, Cleopatra, Tropicanna, Tropicanna Black, Tica Yellow Princess, Tica American Dream, Canna Indica, Wyoming, and Dwarf Pink growing in my tropical garden. I also purchased and planted four new Canna Lily plants - Mango, Chocolate Sunrise, Yellow King Humbert, and Alaska.
    Canna Liliy plants are also invasive and they need to be dug up to keep them under control or they may overrun your garden. I dug up the rhizomes and many plants can grow from just one seed. The Canna Lily rhizome grows underground runners that spread throughout the garden.
    I find out that snails are eating my Canna Lily leaves and leaving them with holes. I remove many of the damaged leaves and remove some Canna Lily plants because they are growing out of control. I later find out the snail has a new home.

    I had so many of them of different kinds for many years … but the leaf roller started to eat them for last 2 years. So annoying to keep up with the chemicals after each rain . I got rig of all plants last week . I will miss my beautiful Canna Lillies .

      That’s terrible, I couldn’t imagine having to get rid of mine. My fear is getting a Canna virus and having to remove them from my garden.

      I don’t see many snails, when I do see them I just pick them off by hand.

    Your cannas say "I have a full time job" am I wrong to make this assumption? Or do you just have a lot of plants?

      I have over 70 varieties of tropical plants in my garden plus I propagate a lot. I’m also retired, so I guess my plants are my “job” 😀

    hi...i am seeing similar holes on my canna and hosta leaves. Infact my jalapeno plant is now just left as twigs, all leaves are eaten.. do you any suggestions to avoid slugs snails and even squirrels from eating my plants?

    • @Tropifornia
      @Tropifornia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my garden, the snails love the hostas and I've lost many of them. I have tried the slug and snail bait but I don't know if it works because the hostas don't get better. The cannas look ugly because of the holes and the snails hide in the unfurling leaves.
      So for about 2 weeks I went into my garden at various times between 9pm and 6am with a flashlight and there were snails everywhere. I removed 200 the first night and after 2 weeks it slowly dwindled to where I only go out once a week and maybe find 20. The plants that were eaten by the snails are slowly recovering.
      I've read about other tricks to deal with snails, but I wanted to actually see the snail population decrease so that's why I did it nightly. I did notice it makes a difference going out at different times of the night instead of the same time. As for squirrels I don't have any squirrels in my area.

      @@Tropifornia wow...i didnt know that they are found in night lol, I dont see them during daytime so I was confused as to who was eating the plants. My veggies are attacked the most. I have put bird net around small veggie plants. Is sluggo from costco a good deterrent ?

      Sluggo should work, go out one night and see how big of a snail population you have and then use Sluggo. Wait a week and go out the same time and see if the population has decreased. The snails like the soft leaves that's why your vegetables get the most damage.
