this is when i first started watching hockey as a 10yr old… this rivalry got me into the sport… and still a huge NHL fan today
"I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out"
I watched almost all my hockey on ESPN2 in those days living in Hawaii in the early days of expansion,(especially in tv coverage). @awood40 I don't know how you find the time, but you're channel is the best and has been for a long time. Bring back NHL2Nite!!!
I was blessed enough to see the Wings win 4 Stanley Cups, but this is still my favorite Red Wings game of all time! It was a turning point in the franchise's history!
A classic! The Wings effectively won the Cup that night. The brilliant Scotty Bowman saw the grit in Mike Vernon that night to make the surprising call to start him over Osgood in the playoffs. One of the most gutsy and brilliant coaching moves ever. Fast forward and the Wings won their first cup in 40 something years
YES!
42 years... And Bowman is the goat among his pairs.
Screw Lemieux. This was one of the greatest moments in hockey history. The cherry on top was McCarty scoring the GWG.
One of the top five sporting events ever.
12 years old, watching this with my Dad and my best friend (who was a Roy/Avs fan). Remember it like it was yesterday. I could’ve died happy on March 26th, 1997.
Being from Detroit and stationed in Colorado that was a fun time for me. :)
Being a 6th Gen. Minnesotan with a background in hockey and witness to the vile, no respect or intelligent nature of Coloradans, as well, my deep respect since childhood for the Red Wings - Michigan, I was in heaven.
Wish hockey was still this fun to watch
I miss 90's hockey.
4:28 That's how it should be. Well said by Stevie Y. Nobody says that today. A player on an opposing team can deliver a dirty hit, and there's no reaction and no retribution given.
Love the little look and smile Shanahan gives as Vernon takes Roy down to the ice. Proud of his goalie for getting stuck in
This game was the reason Detroit went onto 3 cups. What a beauty.
2 of my favourite teams! started playing ice hockey about 1990 and it was the Red Wings I liked back then but then played in Peewee international tournament in Quebec and then became an Avalanche fan . Both teams had hockey Hall of Fame players throughout their team.
IMO the best hockey game in my lifetime. I remember it well
This was such a dirty game. I remember watching this and just being in awe. Especially at how into everything the fans were. Any contact they went ape shit.
Also, I miss Gary Thorne. Great voice, and play by play man.
The best!
Вот это был матч когда забил Фёдоров как он всем поднял настроение своим и трибуны красавчик
As Paul Newman said in the greatest sports movie ever made, Slapshot, "Old Time Hockey!!!" I'll never forget it. I was at a party and we were losing our minds. That rivalry, during that era, was the best. Years of them beating the snot out of each other, love it!
I miss the old NHL on ESPN2, the font & graphics, Thorne, the music...epic nostalgia!! NHL on FOX back then was epic as well. I forgot how low the glass was on the side of ice too.😍🏒🥅
Edit: 10:34 adding to the epicness & story of this legendary game? Dudes first game. He's telling a helluva story, "Eh, it was a lot of fun, Mom. My first Ultimate Team Fighting Championship and a dang hockey game broke out, eh!" 🤣👌
When hockey was just flat out awesome.
Damn, that was one helluva game!
Match 26th, 2021 will mark the 24th anniversary of this game
Gary Thorne: "This is what had to happen"
Still feels good
Agreed....best game. Was lucky enough to watch it live.
