    • @errbt
      @errbt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stratcat3216 You still aren't making any sense. What "combination of games"? Vernon and Roy only faced each other as starters in the playoffs four times: '86 (Finals, Calgary vs. Montreal), '89 (Finals, Calgary vs Montreal), '97 (Conference Finals, Detroit vs Colorado), and '99 (first round, San Jose vs Colorado). They each won two of those four series. The only time you could say Vernon "got his ass kicked" by Roy was '86 when Roy was a rookie sensation and beat the Flames 4 games to 1. Vernon was able to get his revenge three years later, though. If anything, this fight (and game) marked the end of Roy and the Avs' mental dominance of the Wings (which had only lasted a year anyway). If you're simply comparing them in terms of goalie skill, of course Roy was better overall. IMO he was as good as any goalie that ever played, up there in a tie with Sawchuk and Brodeur as the best ever.

    • @keithpellegrini9197
      @keithpellegrini9197 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's nice when other fans of other teams recognize greatness and rivalries I often think about when Mark Messier lifted the cup up back in 94 that was a long drought but well deserved.
      The game has gotten softer can you say maybe safer yes but the intensity is not just there back in the day every team had an opposing team that they hated now it's only a few I miss the good old days of just clean heads hard big hits and instead of going after the dude the guy that got hit just got up and kept playing. It has definitely gotten softer but it's still good to remember those days I certainly miss them now your Rangers are probably going to win a Stanley Cup here in the next 3 to 4 years probably.

    • @rgiardelli
      @rgiardelli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@keithpellegrini9197 I agree with everything you said. It is sad that true rivalries are dead. It happened with going 1 thru 8 for the playoffs, which I understand why they had to do it. As you remember , it used to be 1 thru in your own division , so every time you played someone in your division it was a 4 point game. Plus you would meet the same teams from your division in the playoffs every year. Boston vs Montreal, Rangers vs Flyers or Islanders, Detroit vs St Louis or Chicago etc, now you very rarely play the same team two years in a row, nevermind every year. And free agency and cap don't allow you to keep the same guys for years , so the familiarity, which breeds contempt lol isn't there either . The Rangers are in a good spot right now and I think they are well rounded and really good goal tending so they have a shot, but TB is loaded, so tough to get by them. Detroit is rebuilding and are on the upswing. It's good for Hockey when Detroit and Chicago are winning bcz of being great hockey towns and knowledgeable fans. So hopefully you guys rebuild quickly and get back to business.

      I'm an American, and from Detroit... This was one of the best games I've ever seen... but it was because of the passion and loathing these two extremely talented teams had for each other (this level of loathing was genuine and rare)... If it was just fighting and not great play it wouldn't be remembered as one of the great games of all time..
      Also, the European style (especially Russia's) has been and is still the best style of play... My favorite player when I was a kid was Petr Klima (Czech) but the Russians have put out some of the greatest most gifted players of all time... If the NHL played on an Olympic size ice sheet European/Russian players would've dominated the NHL for decades!

    To me one of the greatest hockey rivalries of all time! Two teams, and fan bases who genuinely hated one another. Yet both teams were well stocked with hall-of-famers. I watched this game that night knowing full well that if Claude Lemieux was going to play something definitely was going to happen. And did! I'll always remember this game, and rivalry. Go Avs!

  • @tmacba

    A classic! The Wings effectively won the Cup that night. The brilliant Scotty Bowman saw the grit in Mike Vernon that night to make the surprising call to start him over Osgood in the playoffs. One of the most gutsy and brilliant coaching moves ever. Fast forward and the Wings won their first cup in 40 something years

    4:28 That's how it should be. Well said by Stevie Y. Nobody says that today. A player on an opposing team can deliver a dirty hit, and there's no reaction and no retribution given.
