  • Quick demo of my new amp, a 1972 or 1973 Traynor YBA-1 Bassmaster.
    I installed a new power cord and new filter caps. I'm not sure if the tubes are original or not, but they're very old!
    The only mod that affects the tone is a PPIV Master Volume circuit. I used a dual ganged 500kOhm audio pot, 24.9kOhm resistors, and 0.1uF 400V ceramic caps. Here is a link to a document that describes various tweaks you can do to these old amps. They're relevant to most vintage tube amps (at least Fenders and Marshalls): www.kilback.net...
    Again, the only mod I did was the PPIV Master Volume, but I used different circuit values for more crunch!
    The guitar is an all-stock 2009 Gibson Les Paul Traditional in beautiful honeyburst--ROCK!!!

    @TheDevillll I'm an electrical engineer. Argue about mods improving tone or not, but you MUST replace the 2-pronged cord and death cap. That just shows ignorance about safety and modern wiring.

      Uh he mentions he changed out the power chord to a three prong grounded chord already in the beginning of the video....

      Thanks, I'm going to get another one one of these days, just don't have a need for an amp that big right now :(. Actually I still have a Reeves Custom 50PS, so I should say that I don't have a need for 2 amps that big right now.
      Old Traynors are about the best bang-for-the-buck possible, in my opinion. And just great amps for any price with a few tweaks.

      here in northeast usa yba1's are going for $700 plus...just saw a video where the reissue yba-1's (new) are $699...lol

    @TheDevillll Really? I'm sorry to hear that and hope you're ok! It's very simple to replace the 2-pronged cord with a grounded 3-pronged one, get it done and you won't have to worry about it anymore, then you can just enjoy your awesome amp!

    Thanks for the concern, I probably should be a little more safety conscious at home. I didn't have a guitar in hand for another minute, though.
    Also, if you look closely, I always rest my hand on the top of the cabinet, which isn't connected to chassis. That's just another little touch that makes these old amps such a joy to work on: a quality enclosure and removable top panel.

    @TheDevillll Don't mean to scare anyone but Keith Relf, The Yardbirds singer, died from this. "Death Cap" is slang and refers to the capacitor between power and chassis on the input side of T1. See the document I linked in the description, it tells how to install a 3-pronged, grounded power cord. Very easy. You can take a 3-pronged cord from some appliance (refrigerator, vacuum, computer, etc.) you have laying around. Or just buy one at a hardware store.

      be safe!put a 3 prong grounded cord on & ground to the amp chassis, when you sell this, the vintage snobs will put an ungrounded cord back on it.

    Thanks to everyone concerned about my safety, but as an electrical engineer I want to emphasize that I WAS entirely safe in that video. But I wouldn't poke around a live circuit if you aren't trained

  • @ErictheRed1978
    @ErictheRed1978  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @leefyboodle There's no "on" or "off"; it switches which AC leg is the "source" or "return", if that makes since. You should replace your 2-pronged cord with a 3-pronged, grounded one for safety.

    • @MrZootalores
      @MrZootalores ปีที่แล้ว

      old amps? it's easy to add a grounded cord/plug & *ground that sucker* to the amp's frame, let the vintage snobs get electrocuted

  • @ErictheRed1978
    @ErictheRed1978  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That way my guitar goes into both channels, and I can blend each channel's volume to control my sound more. You also get more gain that way.

  • @ahamay79
    @ahamay79 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @leefyboodle . First: Never let a friend borrow your amp. They always kill them.
    You can try new tubes. The amp may also need a cap job. Put in some new F&T filter caps. It probably needs them anyway.

  • @MrZootalores
    @MrZootalores ปีที่แล้ว

    any old equipment that you use gigging,make sure it's grounded to the chassis with a 3 prong cord- a shock off a mic from an ungrounded amp you're playing ain't a good thing. when you sell it, the vintage snobs can put the 2 prong cord back on...

  • @fretbuzz59
    @fretbuzz59 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @TheDevillll Wireless not always practical. And not doing non-destructive pwr cord mod just to maintain stock-ness is very foolish. Besides, even routine servicing, such as new caps, renders amp no longer stock. The MV mod shown doesn't harm anything--no holes drilled, etc--and is reversible. Why not if it makes it more usable to the player? I used to run a MV in the FX loop b/c my amp's clean tone was TOO clean at reasonable vol. I'd use pedals for more distorted tones.

    @metalcore929 I played it through the Celestion Vintage 30 in my 1973 Traynor YGM-3, not a "real" cab.

    do you have a tremolo on there int the clean section? I know you said you didn't have anything in there but it sounds like there is. I love these amps. Super awesome sound and great mod too.

    If you read all the conversation you would see that Im bringing in the amp to get a complete update but thanks for your concern I appreciate it.Im also getting a master volume installed and a mod to get some good gain out of the amp.Since Im getting work done to it why not hot rod the amp ehh.Also how are you guys emailing me.Please tell me.

    @marvinbrando Sorry, I didn't see this comment earlier. I'd recommend just going for the Lar/Mar mod, you can always undo it if you don't like it! It's definitely a better design than the one I did in this video.

  • @ErictheRed1978
    @ErictheRed1978  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @likemike06 It depends on the style of music you play and how much volume you really need. Most people think they need more power than they really do, since most venues have a PA system, etc. I also don't play bass...
    Having said that, it's got great tone for both bass and guitar. It's also louder than most 50W tube amps to me. With no mods, it's too loud for most guitar situations. Unless you're playing for thousands of adoring fans I would think it'll be plenty of volume for a bass.

    Thanks for the info. I'm not sure I pulled up the right link. I was hoping for a schematic. I see Metroamp sells a Lar/Mar PPIV master volume kit, (apparently named Larry in part). Is this the mod you'd recommend? I recently bought a YBA-1 and am seriously thinking about doing a MV mod, but I want to do it right.

    3 prong cord... My house (the only place I use the amp) doesn't have 3 prong sockets, they didn't do that in 1916 or in the 50s-60s when somebody rewired it. Happily I have the 1969 version of this amp which doesn't open on top.

  • @ErictheRed1978
    @ErictheRed1978  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheDevillll P.s. I only own a Reeves Custom 50PS with matching 2x12 cab and a Dr. Z Maz 18 now. 15+ pedals, most boutique, and while I can get great tone, none have the same sound this amp did :(.

  • @roncarter2188
    @roncarter2188 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just wanted to know if you put the master volume control through the extra speaker jack instead of drilling another hole in the chassis? I think this what I'm going to do to mine, that way it's completely reversible. Cool demo man, sounds bad ass.

    • @ErictheRed1978
      @ErictheRed1978  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a long time, but I believe that I put it where the Ground toggle switch is. Once you install a 3-pronged power cord, that switch is no longer in the circuit.

    I have had this exact now for 10 years now....It's always performed amazing....I love it...I lent it to friend and now it's screwed. I have no knowledge of how to fix amps...SO it's killing me....The bass has completely dropped off....There is literally none compared to what it used to be like......It's still loud enough to gig but sounds pretty bad....It distorts far too easily compared to how clean it used to be...Could it be a vavle issue? any reply would be very very welcome at the minute.

  • @leefyboodle
    @leefyboodle 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ahamay79 ....Also....The ground (earth) switch?....Scary little thing....I've always assume the "up" position is on.....Is it? there is not an on or off tag on it so i've never known....I always left it in the up position as ive never been electrocuted. :-D

    @marvinbrando There is a link in the description, but I did another one that I like a LOT better now. TH-cam won't let me post a link, so type this into Google "The PPIMV site:forum.metroamp.com" and follow the first link. The moderator that signs his posts "Larry" explains everything you need to know on the first 4-5 pages or so.
    Good luck.

    I like your tone and effort to put this up.Onr thing that was cringe worthy was at 1:34 even though you were using a pencil to touch the circuit(good) resting your hand near a live chassis with i presume a guitar in hand makes me hope your family knows CPR.

    @ahamay79 HI there again....I've no real clue what F&T caps are....sorry. I would try and work it out but i don't want to mess up and break something forever. I put an old set of valves in to see if that changed my treble issue...Alas it failed.....I have considered selling it but im sure i'd never get what i beleive it to be worth...And i'll never ever have the chance to own a vintage amp of this quality again.**************** CRIES*********

    Why modd these great vintage amps it takes away from the original of it.Fuck just use good pedals.I have a yba-1a I will never touch it.Thats just me.No offence to anyone.No need to change power cord to 3 prong just use wireless keep it original guys.I have been shocked once and I learnt don't touch anything while playing wont be a problem.It does sound great but It will sound great with pedalsin blind test you would never tell pedal or amp dont say you can cause you cant.
