I took a chance and purchased a VagTacho 3.01 Opel Immo cable from a Chinese website; the cable came with a mini disc containing the necessary drivers. I inserted the disc into a laptop running Windows 8.1 and could not get it to connect. I then used an older laptop running Windows 7, inserted the driver disc, and was able to launch the program exactly as it appears in this video. I have not used it to program my new keys yet, but what I'm saying is the 3.01 cable seems to be best suited for Windows 7 (assuming you have the necessary driver disc). I wish you all the best of luck.

I also own a Ross-Tech cable and I think I will have better luck w/that. No regrets for buying the VagTacho cable though, because of the price!!

Can I still retrieve the pin if I do not have a functional RFID chip. I have a brand new key and the chip needs programming, will vag tacho retrieve pin using this unprogrammed key? Or my old key with nonfunctional RFID chip??? Thanks for the videos, hope I can come up with a solution to my problem.
It is absolutely crucial; when doing ANY programming, to use a battery charger and in the case of VCDS, it won't work if the voltage is not maintained. The last thing you would want to do; is brick your speedo or scramble your immobilizer programming! Battery voltage must be at least 12.5 V; if you are doing the work for the first time, it may take you awhile to figure out how to do things and when the door is open, it can easily drop below that voltage. I don't know about the genuine Vag Tacho but the with the Chinese knockoffs; it is always recommended to use VCDS to do the programming and just use Vag Tacho, for pulling the SKC (secret key code). Many people; have bricked their speedo; trying to do stuff in Vag Tacho.
+William Pelzel Yea I'm used to it only taking 5 minutes or so to program them so sometimes I forget to cover that step and I remembered after the fact. I haven't heard of issues yet with the real Vag-Tachos but most every ebay one is junk. I have another video programming the keys with VCDS I did on the same day. I need to link to this video too. Billy P. I was thinking the same thing.. working with vcds is a peach once you got everything you need to learn the keys in.. I do like vag tacho because it pulls the PIN without a sweat. But for the actual key learning I’d still use vcds WITH a battery charger.. cool vid man, I might order one of these. Working with dealers to get the pin for a car is major pain in the ass here, they just won’t help you.. and going to a locksmith is just a waste considering he probably uses the same equipment!

I would love to see it!. Our's is a 2001 VW beetle and it's all in that instrument cluster for the immobilizer. Program a key? And set your airbag warning light on! (Glad this program has the feature for air bag resets) Also when I did this procedure, It bricked 2 of the 3 keys. Thankfully we still have a functional key! I'm going to give it a shot again tomorrow after we do the state inspection. It's very touchy.

i'm not a fan of cheap china junk but the one i got off ebay has been working for 2 years flawlessly

vcds will not retrieve the pin code.
