Yes , Chandler did re-use plot elements more than once . In fact , isn't there a certain same - ness about his characters. ? The femme fatale / the noble private Dick / the sleazy but good looking gangster / the " punk " gunman. ?? Compared to many of his contemporaries Chandler kept a tight rein on his imagination...? He criticised English Country House murder mysteries for cliche / typecast scenarios but he seemed to fall into the same trap....??
at the beginning, there is mention of a DeSoto brand car -- that was to Chrysler what Buick is to Chevy ... Have not seen one for years, but today saw a bright red Plymouth Fury with ginomous tailfins !
I’ve seen 1936 given as the date for this story. “Pony glass” and chewing cardamom. I remember asking my mom why she called a shot glass a pony glass. Never knew anyone who chewed cardamom.
Did the author tell you that? Or is this conjecture? I can do that also. If the author could hear from beyond he isn’t happy with you hearing his work without paying for it.
I don't know when this was written, but the business with the ex-cop and the gambling ship come from "Farewell My Lovely."

We had a DeSoto in 1963, light blue, gear shift in the steering column. Large and ooh so heavy! Heavy.
Bulky . Boxy. 9 mpg

Hmm.? Chandler really went to town here with wordy descriptions of every
scene . Funnily enough , he WAS being paid by the word..... 🤔🤔 ?
If the author can hear from beyond, he isnt happy with the AI.
