Planted 10 Gallon Community Fish Tank w/ Crowntail Betta

- Here's a vid of my planted 10 gallon aquarium. The whole idea started out as just a small 2-3 gallon Betta tank, then evolved to a 10 gallon community tank. Heihachi, my Crowntail Betta gets along great with the other fish. Contrary to popular belief, Bettas can be very social animals. They can be kept with other fish as long as those fish don't have big tails/fins and look like other Bettas. At one point, I put him in his own 5 gallon tank and he just looked totally lost. By the third day or so, he was just laying in a corner of the tank. Turns out he was depressed. I put him back in the 10 gallon tank and he was right back to normal. Anyway, here's how I have the tank stocked:
Fish: 1-Crowntail Betta
2-African Dwarf Frogs
3-Sunfire Platys
4-Ghost Shrimp
7-Black Neon Tetras
Plants: Amazon Sword
Anacharis
Dwarf Hair Grass
Moss Ball
(I forget what's in the back right, so if you know, feel free to fill me in)
That might be a larger fish load than normal for a 10 gallon tank, but I'm running a Tetra Whisper EX30 filter, which is way large, and I do a 20% water change weekly. For the plants, I keep 1 Flourish root tab near the base of the sword and dose the water with API Leaf Zone once a week. The sword grows nice and steady and the anacharis grows like crazy. I'll usually propagate a couple pieces every couple weeks. The only problem I have is a little brown algae and some green algae on the substrate. I might lay off the Leaf Zone for a little and see if that helps.
Video taken with a Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10 720p@30fps.
I swear I could just sit here and watch this and listen to the music. The tank and music are simply beautiful.
This is so peaceful.... I think I'm enlightened by this....
I'm glad you found out that bettas don't have to be alone. I think that whole belief came about because of the myth that they like to be in tiny tanks. You obviously couldn't put anything else into a betta tank that is 2.5 gallons or smaller, but as long as the betta is the "king" of the tank and has enough personal space then there are usually no problems. I think bettas are starting to be more understood as of late and hopefully it results in people understanding that they shouldn't put them in tiny tanks and bowls. Great job on the video and very nice tank.

Every time I see this my heart lights up and thank you just been going though some bad things but this video always turns it around.
Thank you very much! I glad you like it. Remember, everything gets better eventually.
mikepags it has thanks n_n
Love the tank, I especially love the short, thin grass with the rocks. It looks very natural.
Beautiful set up of your tank! I'm sure your betta is very happy! This video has gotten me inspired to get a better tank for my betta. He's already in a 10 gallon tank with a pleco and both get along just fine but would love to add some plants and maybe some little tetras
Thanks so much for posting this video! It's great to see bettas out of those horrible little cups and loving fishy life!
This is a lovely tank! I love your little frog that popped up at the end! Good job!
This tank looks bad ass good job
This is an absolutely amazing tank! Great job!
This is the best tank I have seen on TH-cam so far!
There's something very special about this video.
This is a beautiful set-up! It's refreshing to see a small tank this well-maintained and lovely-looking. Keep up the work! I want to move my beta to a bigger tank; he's super aggressive, but I might see how he works with other fish just to give it a try.
Your tank is very impressive! and your SFF is gorgeous.
Beautiful tank and I really like the music. I have the same basic setup for Clint my Royal Blue Vail Tail Betta. Clint is very happy and is actually growing bigger with full long tail and dorsal fin. Nice job on the video.
Georgeous set-up. I love your tank! If all of my fish die ( i have goldfish and a pleco) which i hope they don't, i will do this.
so calming and relaxing with the tank and the music ! :)
Wow, that's a very nice community, and a sexy betta. I'm planning on making a community tank too.
Gorgeous tank!!!!! and gorgeous betta.
Oh this tank is super cool! Great job, and that red crowntail is stunning! Swift nimbus likes y
not all bettas can do this but there are some that can given the time and patients to make it work that is.
Very relaxing music; love it. Nice tank!
This is very calming to watch. thank you :)
Thanks for the info Mike. Will do/Hope my tank comes out as nice as yours.
Beautiful fish tank!! Love the video!
Dude this is so relaxing, and beautiful, awesome tank and fish! i think you might benefit from adding a small algae eater or pleco though
@Aquariumlover757 That's awesome! I like the Tetras you have in yours. It looks like an active tank!
really pretty tank! might want a hiding place for your shrimp to get away from the betta, and molt.
beautiful positive tank, i got a similar peacefull tank as well, without the beautiful music though
This is the most beautiful aquarium video I've seen on TH-cam! The only thing bothering me is that dirty filter. Otherwise, great video and excellent audio choice!
Such tranquility!
This is a really pretty tank! I have 4 platys, all female, in a 10 gallon, and I was thinking about adding a male betta (as soon as my ich problem goes away!)
This is exactly what I wanted to see I have a betta fish and 1 dwarf frog, one died yesterday but he lived 6 yrs, I wanna have my betta and 2 frogs with comet fish
I use one of those magnetic things for the glass and a siphon to clean the gravel.
this tank is beautiful!!
Absolutely. People think Bettas can live in small tanks, and they can, but it's cruel. It's like making you live in your bedroom your whole life.
Very nice tank!
Awesome tank make sure that betta is safe
well ill buy a betta fish because ive always wanted one, and put it with my other fish. im trusting you on this because i had my other fish for like 6 months and id hate for something to happen to them. thank for all the advice :)
This is Amazing! one of the best tanks ive scene! : D
nice crowntail and tank. i have a crowntail in 60 litre tank with cories
nice and peaceful
it's definitely possible to house a betta with other fish. But their tankmates must have the following: They must outswim the betta, they cannot have extended fins and bright color, as these qualities resemble the betta itself, which will cause it to attack its tankmates, and fish size may also be a threat factor to them. I housed a gold veiltail in my 29 gallon with 4 panda cories, 5 minnows, a nerite snail and 2 male mickey mouse swortails, white with bright orange pigment. Othen my betta would chase them as they were bigger in size had attractive color, but never managed too do any serious damage. It was more of hierarchy dispute amongst the 3. All other fish not only smaller, but also less colorful and posed no threat to the betta, so they thrived. It would even sometimes swim alongside the cories and shared wafers with them.
@alizcool1Yeah, that's what I was figuring. The background is a picture of some roots/rocks along with some moss, sort of like java moss. Thanks for the compliment. I checked out some of your vids last night too. Looks like you have a nice setup going on there as well. i liked the Sailfin Mollys
That's okay to leave a little algae on the substrate. I think your shrimps will clean those right up!
I didn't know. I'm new to the whole panted tank thing. But thanks for the answer, I'm assuming thats a no.
@youronlycow It's aquarium salt. It's very mild and actually recommended for fresh water aquariums.
@GliderGuy93 Yeah, I would think that would be right at the limit, but it should be fine. The Tetras are pretty clean fish compared to some others. Just make sure you keep up on the water/filter changes and vacuum the gravel regularly.
@Vipstephen I don't see why not, but you never know until you do it. Fish have personalities too. They're like dogs. Certain breeds are known to have a particular temperament, but every once in a while you get one that's a little different.
This is really nice.
He has a good filter and does daily water changes, maybe? I'm happy, I just got my fifth subscriber!
Okay. Thanks! I like your tank the best out of a
i want to know i want my betta, Castiel, to live in a community like this one . :)
truly amazing
some people just have thee most crazy names for their bettas.
Mine is Sir Edwin Holms'Steer, The Commador-Edward Woodhous, and Lady Mcqueen.
I mean, COME ON!
Beautiful
@youronlycow First I added the Betta, then the Tetras and Platys, then the frogs and shrimp. Everything worked out well that way.
WOW!! amazing
!! I just subbed
!!
All Bettas have different personalities.
Hey man if you have space in your tank, get yourself a candystripe plecostmus, maximum of 5 inches, and they aren't lazy like most plecos, they work for their food. just an idea.
Great tank! This is way better than all the show-iffy tanks on this site. I like the color contrasts with the platies and black neons. Do they ever nip your betta? When it's feeding time, do they all get food to eat or do the tetras dart up and scare others away from eating food at the surface? I'm cycling my 29 gallon with 7 head and tail light tears, and the book I read said they're one of the more peaceful larger tetras. I really want a male betta and platies as well as some cories and a Sia
@DefyingGravity767 I've heard of the suction tubes falling off before. Mine's loose, but has never fallen off. I wouldn't say it's loud, but it's not really that quiet either. I can hear it faintly from the other room. If it bothers you, bring it back and get another one. I'm sure they make them more quiet than this.
Pretty!
i really want to make a replica of this for my room....after all, i do have an empty 10 gallon tank sitting down stairs.
@PuganPoo Grab like a 10/20 gal filter. Some people say less flow is better. If you only have a Betta in there, just get a smaller 10 gal filter.
nice fish
It seems like they are alright now, but earlier the Black Molly I got had Ich, and it spread bad. He and 2 Tetras died, but I assumed it was 3 Tetras since 1 was hiding. Got the medicine and had to immediately replace my Tetra's so I would not have them all stressed due to a small school. Then the other one came out of hiding. But all aside that, I think my tank is doing pretty well. Think I could fit a couple more Neon's though? Might make them slightly happier with more.
i think cherry barbs would look real nice
@martsotto Hey thanks for the compliment. You can find the Buddha by going to Amazon and typing in "Serene Buddha Statue Classic Home Table Shelf Decor". The price varies depending on who's carrying it at the time. Right now, they're $2.79 + $6.99 shipping. The size is 4 in. x 3 1/4 in. x 6 1/2 in. You can also find these on eBay sometimes by typing in "Alabastrite Buddha"
Very awesome tank. I really like the plants, & Buddha you have going on in there. I have one question. Is your Crowntail Betta a male or female?
beautiful tank! love how its a community betta tank, been thinking about doing this too.. we have the same budhha lol. let me know what u think about my tank :)
By the way i am thinking about doing something like this, LOVE the tank!
Yup, positive.
Also, the order in which they are introduced in the tank matters.
@Vipstephen I didn't have an air pump, but my filter is a Tetra EX30, so it's a big filter for that tank and causes a pretty big current. My Betta seems fine and hasn't had a problem so far.
@mikepags Thanks for your informative response!!! :)
@Braden8558 Actually I'm not really sure what dwarf sag is, so I'm gonna say no. The rotalla is the same as it's been since I got it, but the Platys started to eat it, so it doesn't look as full. I agree though, the color is a little brown. It still produces new growth.
Omg. Love this tank so much!!!! May I ask where did u buy all of your stuff at? Like the really small grass in the center. I love this tank :)
The statue is available at petsmart.I've seen it their before.pretty tank also btw(^_^)
Awesome tank!!! Love your combination of Fishy!! :D Do you use any CO2 or ferts?
awesome looking tank i have 3 bettas an ive put shrimp and white clouds in with my bettas an he has attacked an killed everything so now i leave them be
@Helms97 I've heard they help clean the tank. Mine however, developed this green algae on it. I picked the moss ball up to brush it off in the water, and six months later, this green algae is all over and I can't get rid of it. I finally got rid of the moss ball.
That tank is AMAZEING i hope to do something like that some day. How much does that all cost?
very nice
@CaliforniaBEARmd My fish have been doing fine together. I'd advise getting other fish that don't look like Bettas. In other words, no fish like guppies with big fins. That's what I've heard anyways. I've also heard that it depends on the individual temperament of the Betta. Mine was a little territorial for the first couple days, but then he chilled out and has been fine ever since.
Nice video and beautiful tank. I was told by the people at a couple pet stores that I should not put live plants in my 10 gallon tank because when vacuuming the gravel you will break the rooting system and in turn kill the plants. How do you keep the plants in such great shape in your tank. Are you vacuuming the gravel when you do your 20% water exchange?
not going to say you dont know your tanks, but compared to my ten gallon that tank looks huge. im actually looking to stock it with a gourami, a female betta, a platy or two and some shrimp and otos once its done cycling.
That's a really awesome tank man! Is there any algae problems with the live plants in there?
No, they don't fight. The music is a royalty-free song provided by TH-cam.
Heh, I already got my fish. 5 Neon Tetra, although one is a hider, 2 Molly, 2 snails, 2 ADF.
Nice tank, can you make one video changing the water
@ztetnies The moss ball is cool, but it started forming some green algae on it. I cleaned the algae off and some of it fell on the rocks and spread like wildfire. I'm not sure if the algae came from the moss ball or if it was just coincidental.
Give it a shot. You'll never know unless you try.
I forget exactly what the substrate is. I think it's regular gravel with fluorite mixed in. The lights are the longer, tubular cfl's from IKEA. I think they're 11 watts each.
@CupWave I forget, but I think you could get it all going for about $125
really nice set up! since you have the shrimp, did you have to put a sponge over the filter intake?
@patriclop2pl No CO2, but I do use a Flourish tab right near the African Sword and dose the tank with Leaf Zone about once a week or once every other week.
@evrdrandosity I have no first-hand experience, but I would assume so, since they don't look like Bettas. That's mostly when Bettas get aggressive...when they think there is another Betta in their space.
@anstar99 It was either at PetSmart or PETCO.
nice setup!do u have substrate or ur hairgrass doing fine with your current gravel?i am also have hairgrass with the same size of gravel, all the other plant grow well, only the grass doesn't seem to spread out as i aspect!
The current is a little strong for your betta IMO. But the tank looks good.
