My local fish store owner drill my glass aquarium he use vegetable oil instead of water and he drilled four holes and when I asked him why he used vegetable oil he said it was I like using cutting oil for metal it makes the blade last longer
I've had those clamshell chips cause bulkheads to leak a few times. To stop that from ever happening again I started drilling from the inside to the outside. That way if the exiting drill bit does chip the glass, then the chips are on the outside of the bulkhead, and they won't compromise the gasket's seal.
I use a two by four, with a hole cut slightly larger, clamped to the tank. Holds the bit in the same place and steadies it.
One aquarium, two aquaria!

Mind story. I’d need evidence.
put a towel on the opposite side, and plug won't crack the tank when it falls out.
