Ben’s story reminded me of the time I told an old coworker about my hobby and he says “oh I have some old fish tank stuff I can sell you for real cheap” so he sent me some pics of it that night. It was a 30 gal with a shattered front, a disassembled HOB with broken impeller, rainbow gravel, fake plants, and Tetra flake food (lord knows how old). I just politely told him to please throw all of that in trash 😂.

I was an idiot and bought very nice jawbreakers. They came all unattached, mouths gaping, and definitely zombie. Later on found out major vendor uses kfc dip and antibiotics to limp them along to their customers. If I knew I would have never given them my money. You could have the deck on hydraulic hinges to allow access to under the house , a client has a similiar thing over their pond to access the filtration underneath it .

Don't use PT lumber, it shrinks and distorts too much as it dries out. No 4x4 or 8x8 either - they twist. Kiln dried 2x lumber or just go with steel, or aluminum.

Really interesting listning to Jonathon and his observations. As he pointed out, the product DinoX actually has the Algaecide - Biocide listed on its information sheet. It also has a referance so you can investigate further. I have used it in small doses in an attempt to eradicte certain algae and Dino over a short time frame and it appeared to work without me personaly observing any detriment at least to the coral species I had. But I knew it was a biocide so was fully aware of the risks. On the EU info sheet it clearly states harmfull to all aquatic life, so should be disposed of carefully.

Just a heads up, the relay that is being used for the chiller or other large current devices is a mechanical relay. It will wear out or the contacts could get fused (welded to each other). I prefer a solid state relay versus a mechanical one. No moving parts. If routine maintenance is performed and checks then it should be good. Plus, you have the Apex to monitor the temperature.

There's a lot of noise out there. The worst part is it's intentional.

How would you make the Potassium Hydroxide solution? Let’s say how many grams per 500ml of water?

Ben, my understanding is that grain doesn't contain taurine, animal protein does; meat, eggs and dairy. The problem with the non grain dog food is actually that they substituted legumes for grain, the studies are looking at legumes as the cause to the disease. A friend's lab was actually one of the dogs first studied with this condition at NC State vet school. Love you guys ❤❤❤❤❤

I looked everywhere for the relay for the apex. I asked on 2 apex forums, and everyone said I was crazy.

I have three dogs, I myself and went down that rabbit hole of dog food, and I came to the decision that the dog food people are crazier than saltwater hobbiest

In a harsh environment the relay could stick, not sure if Ben's relay is normally open or normally closed. Normally closed could have been the reason it did not come on. The relay should be normally open then energized and closed when needing power. Just double check that.

What is the link to the potassium injection? I would like to try eliminating some that have overgrown onto overflow boxes.

I think what Ben's doing is great. I wish most, if not all, LFS's and fish vendors took QT and treatments seriously. The fact vendors don't take the veterinarian side of fish health seriously is a real problem with our hobby, it's longevity, and results in the very high losses between the fish being captured and sold. However, I don't think an individual hobbyist should be doing anywhere near that. prophylactic treatments from an average hobbyist creates as many issues as it solves: unnecessary deaths, inadequate/improper treatments, and resistance. Hobbyists should be isolating new fish and only treating when necessary. This is a great example of where the hobby should go one direction, and the industry (like Ben) should go another direction. As that burden of initial treatment should be on the business and the professionals. It's because the industry was failing so hard at this, that it was left to the hobbyist to sort out. It should be on the breeders, the importers, and the retailers. Not the home hobbyist.
