The maintaining relationships just because it’s easy online is SO TRUE. It really shows who genuinely wants to keep in touch when you get off those platforms, it’s baffling

totallyyyy takes some adjusting too 😮‍💨but then the connections you form after and the people who do choose to stay in touch intentionally are that much more deep friends❣and i'd take that every time!

Says you...I'm just like I am online as I am in real life. People online and real life are all just as fake and sensitive. Been on the net since the 90s and in chat rooms...and my personsality has gotten me banned more times and these days timed out in Discords. LOL. Been banned with FB too many times before i just left it 5 years ago. Bout a year ago i tipped my toe back into IG and Threads and just don't fit with anyone there either. Just Deactivated those. All i have is TH-cam and it's so easy to ignore and just walk aawy from it.

I joined Facebook in 2009 when I turned 13 after begging my mum to let me have an account. Like many others, I was hooked on social media for years, and it became such a normal part of life. By 2020, I decided to delete all my social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), and honestly, it has been a life-changing experience. I feel so much lighter and more present without the constant noise.
That said, one thing I did not expect was how many people would stop sharing news or updates directly because they just assume you have seen it online. It made me realise how much our communication has shifted, and there is this unspoken expectation that everyone is plugged in all the time. While it is a little sad, I have found it also makes for deeper, more intentional conversations when people do reach out, depending on the person.

our timelines with this journey are SO similar!!! and I completely agree with your observation how broadly our communication has shifted with the expectation for us to be "plugged in" always!i it's so frustrating but like you said - makes for much deeper connections with the circle you keep because it requires that extra intentional effort ♥ thank you for sharing your story!! we're 100% on the same wavelength here, i'm so glad you chimed in 😊living under a rock together 🥂

I’m a guy the same age as you and just felt like saying I quit in 2022 by slowly getting off it then I eventually found the most efficient way was to just bite my tongue and delete the ACCOUNTS not just the apps and I swear I had this pain in my side for about a week till I just felt relieved. The biggest thing that was your life is going to get really boring if you’re only three weeks out. So I just wanted to come here and advise that you start going outside. You get into drawing or painting, Playing an instrument, reading. Because after getting on and off of it for the last three years, what ultimately got me off permanently was finding better hobby’s.

I quit Instagram over a year ago and it’s been the best decision. For me, I noticed the confidence I’ve experienced was less about looks (I wasn’t worried about that) but more about my decision-making as an adult. I no longer feel like I’m being monitored and I can do whatever I want (within reason). I just care less about opinions now. And I also savour mundane experiences and actually text my friends/family to share it with, if I want.

oooo this is something i didn't touch on in my video but is really really valid so thank you for bringing it up!!! the judgemental nature of the digital world makes it hard to come to your own decisions about things and cut through all the noise to discover your own identity, morals, and values!! i 100% relate to that as well - people have so many opinions and are WAY too quick to share them online😓you bring up such a wonderful point!!

I reasonate with this video so much, especially with the stalking part. I barely have had convos with these random people and I'm just addicted to stalking them. I used to check peoples profiles off the wake up. I eventually stopped but I still sometimes find myself stalking those from my past or randoms. I'm currently on my 30 day social media cleanse even though I have failed numerous times, but I am going to keep trying because it truly is deteriorating my mental health.

    • @kate.cassidy
      @kate.cassidy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

i know exactlyyy how that feels!!! it is SO hard when you can point at the thing that's causing you stress/mental health strain (ie. social media) but physically can't bring yourself to get off of it because of how addictive it is!! i'm glad you're trying the 30 day cleanse 😊it'll be REALLY valuable even with a few slip ups!! and if you're already on your way with detoxes here & there, deactivating for periods of time, then you're at least aware of the dynamic it's causing you which is the first step!!
cold turkey is the only thing that worked for me ultimately, but it is definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution, it's such a personal decision! I know you'll find your way through ✨💙 i'm going to continue to make videos on this topic because i'm very passionate about it, i have an entire "social media detox" playlist i'm filling out if you're ever interested: th-cam.com/play/PLqrBN0N5p3T2pkaMHZbERX7HxPlZjsJR2.html

Near the end when you said it’s interesting to see who reaches out. Your preaching to the choir. I had SOOO many friends in highschool etc (I’m 23, I quit when I was 20) barely ANYONE kept me in their lives. I’m happily married and don’t really feel like I need a lot of friends but it was kind of wild how quickly my social life died because I wasn’t online but I made new friends, a new life. It’s well worth it

    • @kate.cassidy
      @kate.cassidy  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

the new friends you build and community you create in your life after social media are SO much deeper connections because of being offline (at least that's what i find!!). and then the handful of people from the past who do stay in touch and reach out intentionally on an individual level become really valuable, long-lasting friends ❤it's a weird adjustment period but i think you get muchhh deeper relationships coming out of it!! which i would chose any day over the many many fake friends who i only keep in touch with on social media platforms 🌱

I'm like girl ..I'm 35, we aren't 7 anymore, get over it..we hadn't spoken in 11 years 😂😂 and last time she spoke she bashed me for "loving the gays" so I'm glad she's gone forever.

When I first got into social media, I was living in the times where meeting people in person was a real thing, still. What made me quit social media is when I started to realized the threat I put myself and many people I care about out in the open. Social media is a tine wasting machine and it makes for people to follow you and judge you as a person instead of actually getting to see you in person and really get to learn about you. Social media lowers your value because of the abundance of what most people are looking for online, without the concern of supply and demand. I love to see more people in our generation waking up to see social media for what it really is.

    • @kate.cassidy

"social media lowers your value because of the abundance of what most people are looking for online" - this is a FASCINATING point!!! thank you so much for sharing! i agree we're somehow almost cheapening ourselves by putting on this funny show on platforms like Instagram, curating an image of ourselves for others to consume rather than keeping some things private for ourselves!📱
i'm also very very happy more people are starting to wake up to the dangers of these platforms! like you allude to, it's so much more worthwhile to get to see people in person and really connect/learn about each other more deeply! 🌄we're living under a rock together hahaha

From far, the most honest video that I ever saw about quitting on youtube. For me It’s been one year and a half . At the begging you think that everything changed, but no one tells you how hard is to break patterns of validation and vanity. You get used to be self centered, always in worry about your self image like it was normal, and it isn’t. And even after this time off, I constantly need to remember what makes sense to me, pushing myself to focus on what really matters and remembering my purpose and value to break this addicted cycle over and over again.
Thanks for your video, was the daily reminder for me. Hugs from Brasil! 🇧🇷

I chose not to install one of my accounts, but I think you've convinced me to remove them all. it's worth trying out life without them and seeing how it feels! if you find yourself missing the little videos, then you can go back to them in a balanced/intentional way - it's just good to be aware of our consumption patterns given these platforms are built to be addictive!
when i was first getting off being hooked on the reels/tiktoks, i challenged myself to watch long form content just to heal my attention span - you and your wife could start a new tradition of movie nights :) lots to explore in testing out being off social media!

Yeah, I'm done with all social media as well outside of TH-cam. I use it as a cable replacement, for educational purposes, and mainly watch it on the television. What still annoys me is being out in public and just seeing the # of people constantly having their phones out for social media takes. Like, can anyone just live in the moment?? It also irks me when watching a movie with a group somewhere or at the movie theater and they still are scrolling through whatever social media app. TikTok syndrome is real, people's attention spans are shrinking to the point where they can't even sit and enjoy a simple movie that they paid for.

    • @kate.cassidy
      @kate.cassidy  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

oh i know how that feels.... especially once you've gotten off social media it becomes impossible to not start seeing how addicted other people are 😓i notice it the most on my commutes, seeing other people scrolling endlessly on the train, never looking up! it's like we need to start to build intentional communities for people who are trying to spend less time online/are off social media so we can all meet each other and hang out 😄
i haven't been to a movie in a while but that is WILD that people are doing it still in the movie theater - so grim!! even at home i try to be super intentional - when i'm putting a movie, i'm *watching that movie fully* and put my phone away! it's a good push way to push my attention span too 🌻

deleting social media was the best decision i could have done for my mid to late twenties, ive been off since 2019. The part where you mentioned the struggle being off of instagram due to the businesses using it as their sole platform is the only thing that sucks about not having instagram. also as time goes by the more its difficult to view any links to any social media from friends or family that want to send me something specific they want me to see, and now if they want to send me a tiktok i tell them to record the screen to send it to me which is hella inconvenient. on the plus side though, all the relationships i have are more real because theres effort because no one can assume how i am or what im doing, we have to literally be curious and investigative in each others lives. thank you for your message Kate, this resonated for someone whose been off of social media.

I’m so glad to watch this video. I quit most social media last year, except Facebook and Twitter. Due to increasing privacy concerns, I deleted FB a few weeks ago. I am now severely limiting my time in Twitter, as it’s so toxic, with a goal to quit soon. I want to be completely free from social media. I’m finding, similar to your point, that I need to make more effort now to find information, but I’m okay with that. It’s been so good for my brain. I read a whole book this week! I used to be a voracious reader, but haven’t been able to read more than one page at once in years. I want to have deeper, more meaningful relationships. I’m tired of the very superficial, very negative at times, relationships I’ve had for a long time. I’m enjoying reconnecting with myself and connecting more with others. Thanks for your video and channel!
Edited to add: I think the most important thing in your video that stood out to me is the concept of living my life for me, not for the on,one image. This is what I’m enjoying the most right now. I’m doing what I want, simply for the love of doing it, not for what I can post or tweet about it.

"I’m doing what I want, simply for the love of doing it, not for what I can post or tweet about it." - this is so powerful 💓and such a wonderful thing to experience that I'm afraid some people never do if they're really sucked into the addictive apps :/
i found myself SO out of touch with who I truly was because of all the noise and influence from socials! getting off was the only way I could cut through all the toxicity.
And re: needing to put in more effort to find information.... I have literally come to love "web surfing" in the truest, old school form LOL 🤣like a random site with a bunch of pop up ads or going directly to news articles. There's something so much more fun about it honestly :)

totally resonated with the whole video... never had snapchat nor TikTok, thank god, but instagram is what really got to me. lately. I don't spend that much time, but I have noticed that as soon as I press on it, and start seeing the posts, stories, my anxiety turns on. its like automatically, news, fear and scaremongering, aesthetic and overconsumption, expensive items that I know realistically ill never buy, others homes, cars, lives, realationships ... the whole thing, feels just totally and completely off.
And that's what 2024 for me was all about: slowly wean off in preparation to discard it all.
we should all be living normal happy lives! not being depressed anxious psychos ( adults) in a forever high school drama 😂

I deleted all of my social media in 2020 for a year and a half after having social media since MySpace days, starting in the 8th grade. I was chronically online. I finally allowed myself the space to GROW, because I did not have any distractions. It was truly life changing and eye opening. So many releasing of pent up emotions, so many reflections. I fully believe social media can stunt mental (and spiritual) growth. I decided to get back on in 2022 bc of work but now feeling the urge to delete it again more than ever.

I'm so happy you had that time for deep reflection :) i'm sure you'll figure out how to navigate your relationship with these apps moving forward! it's such a personal decision but i can tell you're a really conscious person and deep thinker so you're on the right path 🌱we're in it together!

I resonate with this so much! but most importantly I love love love your mindset! and the points you made about meaningless connections is so true, I recently stopped using snapchat and now I feel like all the conversations I hold with people are a lot more purposeful as we have to go out of our way to talk to each other. Yes my friendship circle is so much smaller now but all my friendships now seem so much more meaningful to me. Getting rid of instagram and TikTok to stop my doomscrolling is my next step, can't wait to see my mind have a break from it all 😆

i'm so glad this mindset connected with you 🤩we're definitely on the same wavelength!! it is so wild how much more meaningful things become when you remove the low-barrier-of-entry ways of keeping in contact! i don't think i understood how many "less friends" it would feel like i have when i first deleted it, but i really just have much deeper friendships with my smaller circle 😊and i would so much rather it be that way!
good luck getting off IG and TikTok 💖those ones were MUCH harder for me too but i promise it's SO worth it (after the initial withdrawal period😅)

I've been on and off social media for years for almost a decade. My reasons were many and they changed over the years. I deleted Instagram this past July for the last time (it was the only account that I continuously created over a over) and never felt better. I also dislike so much that some businesses build everything around their social media presence and it's a bit tricky to find information sometimes. Social media companies offer a neverending catalogue of everything and that takes a toll in many aspects.
The most important thing about deleting social media is to feel calmer and better. My life's intentional and more meaningful. Less stressed about all that digital clutter as well.
I totally recommend to delete the accounts not just the apps.
Great video, it felt like chatting with a friend.

Found you from the algorithm and this is really refreshing!
I’ve always struggled with this because deep down, I love a slower, minimal and more intentional way of living. That said, as a full time business owner (cinematographer and photographer) Instagram is the only social media I use to promote business. I wish I could let it go but it just generates too many leads and it’s a really easy and logical place to post work when folks ask for references. And Facebook just has some church group stuff I need for updates or hang outs.
Goal is to strictly use these platforms as tools and not distractions. Love your content, Kate. Keep up the great work!

Bennett!! I'm so glad you found your way here 😊 i reallyyyy resonate with you saying how you want a "slower, more intentional way of living"! it's hard to do that in this busy world
and that is very challenging when you need to maintain a social presence for professional reasons but want to regulate your usage on them from the personal standpoint! I think you 100% have the right approach using them as tools not distractions (also love that saying) - they can be super helpful in certain spaces! if you can consciously and intentionally use them in the right way and not sacrifice your own mental well being, then that is the right place to be!

Thanks a ton from the core of my heart for such a valuable content ❣️ In fact, earlier when there was no social media, we always enjoyed the present moment and most importantly, we were complacent with whatever we had. But now, I feel there's always an urge to post our every moment on social media instead of living in the present moment. Honestly, I feel everytime I look for a chance to capture pictures not for the memories, but just for showing them to the ones who wouldn't even remember those pictures after viewing them. And what is more disheartening is the fact that despite knowing the downsides of social media , we still are actively engaged with it, no matter where it will take us in future. Your video is a sincere reminder to take our life seriously. Thanks once again! Much love ❤

I swear it aided my mental and physical recovery by not exposing myself or being exposed to other peoples ‘social media’ lives. I feel now that if you find out about people’s life changing events (engagements, births, marriages, deaths) via social media, then I would question the validity of that friendship. Late stage social media is my fav topic to talk about aaaaand to listen to. I'm a creator with a lil paying/private community so I feel a liiiiiiittle beholden to show up for them (they all came from Insta over the years), but I have struggled with Instagram addiction since 2011 when I first downloaded it, lol. So it was SUPER interesting listening to you talking about your experience with Insta as one of the OG's too! I managed to delete the app and stay off of it for three whole weeks over the holidays in December, and I couldnt effing believe it. I felt SO peaceful, so much clarity! So much grounded-ness and self-assuredness and also productivity and creativity and just all the things. But.... as addictions go, I found myself back on this week and my mental health and creativity and productivity has done a total nosedive. Anyway, loved listening!! On the friendship piece, I’m the person who sucks at reaching out to folks. I work a high demand job, side hustles etc. So I do appreciate being able to keep up with folks on a quicker beat. When I see a story, remember that person and send a quick note, I’ve found it helpful to keep connected with low effort. I do have a few close friends that I do text and connect with more but I do think some of those comments on stories or posts, does help re-spark relationships that you may not maintain as intensely as others.

A few years back I was constantly on Social Media. Primarily Reddit, and Twitter. It wasn't even me necessarily posting anything just constant doom scrolling. and scrolling on things that didn't pertain to me or something that I could have no material effect on. For some reason though it itched my brain in the right ways, but it takes it's toll in a way. I found myself feeling generally hopeless about situations in the world, and wasted hours upon hours doing nothing on those platforms. I eventually cut it out, and replaced it with hobbies. Gaming, Gunpla, Tabletop games, reading, watching movies, 3d printing, and now electronics repair. It was literally liberating. I feel so much more fulfilled with the time I spend, and my days don't feel wasted like they did before. I still scroll Reddit from time to time, or check Twitter, however that's only after I've heavily curated to be what I want those platforms to be for me. Reddit for hobby discussions, Twitter for news (less so anymore, and thinking of dropping it entirely), and facebook for local community stuff. I hope more take this dive, as there is much more to life than just constant scrolling.
Just wanted to also say, great video. You really hit the nail on the head with this.

I’m from the AIM/Myspace age. About 8 years ago I took a break for a good 3 years, and then a year ago took another break. I got back on TikTok for a few months with my messages shut off and now am just done with all of it again. Realized I don’t want to talk or engage with anyone. My life is so much more peaceful and mindful without it. I’m not tempted to constantly check and doom scroll. I own a small art business and that’s where my focus is, as well as reading and spending time outside. Social media has its time and place but life without it is just better.

i left a gym club because every women were filming and i wrote to the manager "it's not the price is right tv set here, you should respect member privacy, there are even people in cloackroom filming my naked body on background when the film themselves in the miror". what a nightmare that gym was. horrible experience. tiktok users are so selfcentered that they can't even imagine their content can violate people privacy, making the buzz on people who never gave explicit content ever. it's like everyone is filming 24/7 now, nobody could control or blame one, because you must blame all others. it's just accepted to be shamed and humiliated on internet by random tiktoker. sometimes you don't notice the phone, and you have a woman yelling at you "I WAS FILMING". sorry i didn't noticed you privatized all the gym club, i didn't get the memo.

How I wish I didn't go back on Instagram; all I had left was TH-cam for any form of social media. I do agree on how cool it feels to catch up with people you haven't seen in a long time, recently meet up with a friend in my hometown, and it was just kinda strange to say but, a human experience. Same when I meet up with my other friend, we've caught lunch or dinner about 6 times throughout the past 3 years, always love hearing how people change and what's going on.

I started to move away from Facebook. My wife checks occasionally so if people want to know what is going on with us she can post something. We are middle aged and our relatives and friends our age are so into attention seeking and validation. When I first joined a few years ago due to a travel group that used the platform, I got friend requests from people I knew years ago and learned how many of them are just awful people, posting borderline or just flat out racist stuff. It's depressing.

the attention seeking and wanting external validation is so real, it's strange these platforms bring that side out in us 😵‍💫it's a shame!! i'm glad you're finding your own balance with it and cultivating your own safe space online - none of us need to see the borderline racist or toxic sides of each other that the social media sites unfortunately perpetuate 😒

WOW that is such a good point too!! for me it was even younger, middle school is when my peers and I started sneakily lying about out ages to get on facebook 😵‍💫but exactlyyy - it's like they almost take away the best part of our youth, the fact that we *can* be so connected to like-minded communities and living closer together and have this great opportunity for deep real-life relationships!
i am optimistic that in the future we'll do digital literacy education at an earlier age but man.... these platforms have run away with our time & attention for so long with their addictive qualities 😕
