Mike Kincaid turned me on to your green cuttings propogation. Thanks so much Dan, for sharing this new (to me) technique. 3 yrs later but still so impactful for anyone, especially newbies like me. This opens up possibilites for me since I just realized I might have gotten two figs that probalby came from tissue culture and they're all leggy with new stems coming out all over the place. This makes me feel better knowing that all the new and slender growth can be used. I understand that the cutting will not produce the spidery growth pattern of the parent plant. So it's not a loss since TC plants will be my prolific mother plants.
if you do this method again (tips growing in the large bins with bin on top) would you please show a video update? Id love to see if this method worked with the large bin on top of another. Thank you!
I came here after seeing Mike Kincaid do a video about green tip cuttings on Figs...I Have a couple figs I want cuttings from and I was ready to cut tips off Thanks Interesting videos. You and Mike answered so questions for me as My fig cuttings have a low rate of rooting.

Anthony Grech the blocks are pre made. You can buy Root Riot or Grodan cubes at your local hydro shop. A seed tray with good soilless media would work also.

Perhaps at this time of yeat (mid-August) is not the right time to try to do the rooting as temperatures here are very high 35 degrees Celsius, but I shall try when it is a bit cooler. Whew! Last night I took the plunge for the Root Riot plugs. Thinking I have some other trees I'd like to try to make cuttings of (Hazel Nut and Mulberry) and most likely more, so I invested in the 100 count bag since seemed most cost effective for the long haul. I still have some rockwool left, not much, from decades back though was thinking better not to use from what I watched and read online. I'll save that for later. @@danfoster25 I'm over in what appears to be zone 6B in Coloma. Guessing will have to take a trip over and get some other varieties to see what all will grow on my south wall and possibly out in the yard. I plant to get another Chicago Hardy this Saturday that is left outdoors year round in South Bend. Is neat finally getting my first fig plants in the ground. I need to remove the plastic frame I placed over and set up against the house to protect from the snow the last few days. I plan to bring two branches plants inside for the winter and most likely leave the rest in the ground as the previous owner I got these from in Michigan City did for the last few years. Do you think is OK to prune back some of the stems and take cutting now?

Anyway, I was wondering if the tip cuttings had any new leaf growth while rooting? It looks like they put on mostly amazing roots... I have started some of my own, thanks to your helpful video.. This is just awesome news, to be able to grow viable plants from tip cuttings.!! Sometimes I spend a lot of money on cuttings and then less than half of them root. Very disappointing.. Do you have a forum where you sell your rooted plants? Thanks for what you do..

Dan is the magic man! I tried this after watching the earlier video that showed success in getting roots. Didn't work for me, zero roots and a bumper crop of mold after 3 weeks, lol. I followed the same concept and only difference was potting media, I used cups of coco coir with 25% perlite instead of the root riot cubes.

This is all well and good, thanks for sharing! I am excited to see how well the green cutting technique works. My main failure point with cuttings is after this stage, then the fungus gnats attack and kill almost all the rooted cuttings. How do you fix that???

I bet it would! Next year I’ll probably just use a good Greenhouse mix like you mention. Mikes a great guy and in his videos , he shares so much enthusiasm and energy.
Hello Dan ! I’m from Michigan also. About 6 or 7 years ago I messed around with root riot cubes and they rooted great, but the roots choked off when they were potted up. Others on the forums back then had the same problem. What has been your experience now that it is a year later.

Grodan Macroplugs look like they're rockwool. I don't think they would work as well as the Root Riot cubes. As for follow up, all the plants that I rooted here have been transplanted and sold. Nothing really to show there as they grew up and moved on to other figsters!

Through further testing, I didn’t like the rock wool cubes. The Root Riot plugs were best. The the rock wool cubes only kept the stem too wet later on and caused some mortality.
No. I know cannabis growers might do that. But figs don’t really need a low pH. But also, in the end, I thought the root riot plugs outperformed the rock wool cubes.
@@danfoster25 Thanks for the reply. I have soaked some cubes in a 5.5 solution to attain a ph of 6.5. I wondered if maybe that's why you had roots on the surface and bottom and not so much in the middle. I ordered some riot plugs to try as well. I have some rockwool but it tends to grow algae, attract fungus gnats and they never break down. I use them for veggies but not cannabis, I feel a lot products are being geared more toward that industry and gardening cost have increased because of it. I might try presoaking some to get a neutral ph and see if it gives different results than what you experienced with the rockwool.

How was the success rate with the transplanting of the rockwool? Also with the root riot? thanks for sharing.
Rockwool final results were 50/50. Root Riot, 100%. Root Riot is recommended over Rockwool.

I like to use Gnatrol in the irrigation water 1x per week.

I used Rock Wool Cubes and Root Riot Cubes. I definitely prefer the Root Riot. The Rock wool cubes seem to hold too much water.
