Join me for a Cessac (TD) fig review with Shawna and Grandpa Ron
Join us for a walk through the orchard. We taste and do a quick evaluation of Cessac and then an even quicker tasting of Ben's Green Greek. Cessac is a fig that I've waited for for quite some time. It's a french fig introduced by Thierry Demarquest. Seems very similar to Smith in my opinion. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Sandy Lake unknown fig Review with Elie and Shawna
มุมมอง 5373 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sandy Lake is a large healthy green unknown fig that was discovered near Sandy Lake in Carrollton Texas. It was collected and planted by a Lebanese gentleman, and then given to my friend Elie over 40 years ago. Elie is a fellow fig enthusiast here in Northeast Ohio, and has been growing it in ground for the past 25 years. He's very fond of this fig and I think you'll see that his enthusiasm for...

What to do with all these figs!

I often get questions about what we do with all my figs. In mid September, it's peak ripening time for my figs that we grow in containers. We definitely don't want them to go to waste. So what do we do with them? We make a few batches of fig jam of course. But, that still leaves quite a few more that need to be preserved in some way. Several years ago, I bought a Nesco food dehydrator. It makes...

Greetings This one comes from an old friend from my Figs 4 Fun forum days. My friend Evelyn collected this one while visiting family in France and Switzerland. It’s a yellow fig with an interesting leaf pattern. The figs are sweet with a nice berry flavor. A couple of edits: I believe Neal Peterson looked at trees that produced fruit with a 6% or less seed to fruit ratio. In developing his cultivars, he weighed multiple fruit from the same tree for several years to analyze this. Not just 1 fruit from 1 year. Freezing may not kill the seed, but I would suspect that seed viability could be negatively impacted by it in some way. If you really want t...

Externally, the similarity with the Spanish Mission (Albacor) and the French Mission (Noire de Caromb) is 100%. The difference is only visible when you cut the fruit and see the color of the pulp. I'm sorry I can't taste the fruit and see if there's a difference in taste.

Hey Dan, you know back in the day around 15 years ago, I use to make my own potting mix. When I did, I got the largest crop every year. As my collection grew over time, I started cheating and buy the packaged stuff--but mixing them all together. What I learned is, they grow so much healthier when you make your own. Back then, I had around a thousand fig trees and 5 separate irrigation lines across an acre of my property. Today, I am older and reduced my collection a whole lot. I've decided to make my own again this Fall. I found a recipe in an old book that's pretty close to yours. I do add perlite and lime in my recipe and bunny poop. I get bunny poop from rabbit breeders and set it out covered and let it decompose for about 2 years. I add that to my mix. The night crawlers love that stuff! I like your videos! Your photos onlne are impressive. Keep up the good work!

Hey there!!! Because you live in Michigan where it's a little colder do you take your figs indoors in winter? I'm in Kentucky and I'd love to have maybe 3 or 4 fig trees. I just purchased 1 Chicago fig tree at Lowes. I'd love some fig tree recommendations. Ideally if like something I can leave outdoors all winter 6a-7a zone. Also do you sell clippings? Wondering if I can root something over winter and plant it early spring. Thanks!!!!!

Omg i just found the fig i think i have. I bought cuttings under the name of longue de aout. One is a true LDA the other idnt and has big 5 lobe leaves. The figs rippen very quickly, 4 days and they get unevenly soft and some spots look more ripe some less. My fig matches this unknown variety almost perfectly. The the neck region falls apart very Easily. You can feel the pulp separating from the neck when you squeeze it to see if its ripe or not. Idk about its rain resistance because its ripening in dry weather right now, but i dont think it will do good because of how soft the skin is, tight eye however, but idk if ima keep it. I dont have much space. Green fig and hardly swells when it starts ripening. Very healthy tree also and very productive. 1 yr old with 40 figs or so

It may. I can’t be sure though. In my mind, most figs have similar hardiness. What sets them apart is their ability to fruit after dying back. With this variety I would have one in a pot and one in ground to make sure I didn’t chance it.

Mike Kincaid turned me on to your green cuttings propogation. Thanks so much Dan, for sharing this new (to me) technique. 3 yrs later but still so impactful for anyone, especially newbies like me. This opens up possibilites for me since I just realized I might have gotten two figs that probalby came from tissue culture and they're all leggy with new stems coming out all over the place. This makes me feel better knowing that all the new and slender growth can be used. I understand that the cutting will not produce the spidery growth pattern of the parent plant. So it's not a loss since TC plants will be my prolific mother plants.
