    I still admire The Big Valley and the legend of the Barkley Family. The theme is always inspiring. And, obviously, the show reminds me of my youth when I would sometimes watch it on ABC on Wednesday nights, and, later, Monday nights. Thanks for the presentation.

    Im going to be perfectly honest. The Big Valley though it lasted a few years, is one of those Westerns that people just straight up like. Also Barbara Stanwyck got even *more* beautiful when she did this show, even though she started her golden years. (If you've seen a few of her films like the Night Nurse, or Double Indemnity you'll see a great actress).

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I have seen most of Stanwyck' movies ( even rarities like 'Red Salute') and she is at her best in westerns ( starting with 'Annie Oakley'). Why? She was tough. Watch her fighting in the mud against David Janssen on Zane Grey Theatre ( no stunt woman it's all Barbara face to the camera ( just like when she took a punch from Clark Gable in 'Night Nurse'))

    • @matthewkoch6937
      @matthewkoch6937 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I first saw her in "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers", followed by "Double Indemnity." Whether as a scheming femme fatale or a sympathetic widow, you could always count on Barbara Stanwyck to give a dynamic performance. I'm not a huge Western fan, but this and "Little House on the Prairie" are just too good to ignore.

I recall a different arrangement for the 4th season opening theme, too, but don't have any proof. It's not on any episode of the season four DVD set. Go figure!!

    I always loved this show when I was a kid, it was shown in the UK first on Saturday evenings before switching to Sunday afternoons. Great acting, great storylines and the theme music by George Duning is divine. The only drawback was that we had to watch it in black-and-white. I wish it would get repeated along with some other great "Westerns" that we don't see anymore, e.g. "Bonanza", "Rawhide" etc. The genre has sadly completely died out now. David, London N8.

    Not to sound too morbid or anything, but I was going through some old local newspapers from the 1920's to see if there was anything of historical interest, and unfortunately here was an article about Miss Stanwyck. The newspaper was from 1927 and it was about an unknown man breaking into Miss Stanwyck's flat on Broadway while she was working on show "Burlesque" and assaulting her. She was taken to the hospital and released and her stand in completed the show the next day. The man was never caught. On a lighter note I think its great that her and many other early Broadway stars were still working well into the 1960's. Joan Blondell (Here Come the Brides) who appeared with Miss Stanwyck in those pre-code "talkies" was another one. In fact Dick Powell, Blondell's ex-husband was a partner in Big Valley's production company Four Star (along with David Niven, Ida Lupino and Joel McCrea). Aaron Spelling bought out Four Star and eventually was sold to Fox. If the information is correct, that would make "The Big Valley" rights held by the Walt Disney Company.

      ironically, didn't ELVIS have blonde hair as a child? and Majors was from the ELVIS school of acting. just good enough, and they look alike. and I always root for Heath when there's trouble. the Barkley boys were not to be fooled with. didn't Nick tell someone? "we earned this land , w/sweat, hard work, and no small amount of blood!".and Stanwyck gets into a fight w/ a crooked photographer in his dark room, lending it a sort of dream quality, and being the fairer sex, she had to put the hurt on this guy ,kicking his ass in a fight, as he was determined to ruin the Barkleys ...,or something. always fair, but tough. she uses his own equipment to break his skull. and how 'bout the time when she had to save Audra (be still my heart)from that rapist freak/spoiled brat ? the rancher's son(RG Armstrong). her acting in that scene was first rate, as always. nearly had a nervous breakdown. Jarod shows up w/ evidence that they had sent the kid "back east" NOT to school, but to a mental health facility, or corrections place(can't remember all of it correctly). the kid was no good, and RG wanted it to appear, Audra was at fault.

    Back when California and most of the western United States was still the Wild West only ceasing to be the Wild West ether at the beginning of the 20th century or the beginning of world war 2, by the 1960s California was no longer the Wild West and was the only southern state booming do to nice weather and lots navy ship building during world war 2 especially out of the San Francisco navy ship yards
    states like Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah on the other hand were not growing at much do to an extremely hot and dry climate though Colorado was growing rapidly but only on the rugged wet green half of the state not so much on the flatter dry half, until the invention of air conditioning and building of water infrastructure in much of the south west, now California aka commiefornia is a democratic shit hole, and people are leaving in droves, Colorado has gone the way of California, New Mexico is just as democratic as California, Nevada is a swing that tilts democrat, Arizona is a swing state that tilts republican and Texas is still republican but not a solid as it used to be, if all the south west goes safe democrat over the next few years, you can kiss your liberties good by for good
