It's surprisingly easy to fall into a mindset where we feel like we deserve to win. A chess game isn't won by being a good chess player; it's won by playing good moves. Every once in a while, even Magnus plays a game out of form. There's no doubt that he's a good chess player. He's the best in the world. When he plays weak moves, though, the same thing happens to him as anyone else. What makes him a great chess player is his tendency to play great moves almost all the time. A higher rating doesn't make us play better moves. Playing better moves makes our rating higher.

The psychological effect of failure at chess (losing a game you should win, losing to a guy that has low elo on a tournament, blunder a good position) absolutely destructive effects on me, nothing like it. I often feel so pissed to myself that i lose all kinda respect for myself and makes me spending the day with anger. Damn it hurts. I think the hardest part of playing chess is not calculating moves for hours or practicing boring endgames but to deal with these kind of sadness that comes with it.

Maybe not quite as abstract, but I’m honestly just curious what trying to improve at chess even looks like at an IM/GM level beyond that it involves a lot of hours. How do you even practice in a deliberate way at that point? Do people play practice classical games and if so against whom? How and when do people learn theory? And where do engines come into all of this?
Would love to hear what your routine was like when you were last studying seriously.

I try to analyse my games as much as possible, but I especially analyse my losses and take them as opportunities to be better ... and it works. Going back and looking at why I lost helps reinforce an idea or leads to learning something new. So, psychologically, while I hate to lose, I like learning and winning the next time when the situation comes up again. And when I say "analyse" it might be quite in-depth or tkae 5 seconds. All depends on the situation, but don't be put off of "analysis" -- it's crucial to development.

My thoughts when playing a higher rates players:
Be solid, look for an opportunity and take it, even if it's small, be patient, of he has forcing moves let him control you as long as you survive, don't got for tricks, he is better than you, he will see them and you will get a bad position, if he makes an obvious blunder see if it's a trap but don't take too long, if you see him underestimating you still do your best as it will take him a while before he realizes you are here to win.
My thoughts when playing in general: make moves with complex depth and multiple threats, play waiting moves leaving your opponent with complicated choices to make a mistake or waste time, pick up on his playing style to predict how he might act, think about your opponents next possible moves, play fast consecutive moves when you have calculated them to perplex your opponent and pressure them to play fast, if you blunder, revert to good play and cancel an unreliable attack plan, if possible switch all focus to the other side of the board fast to invalidate your opponents calculation, if you enter a loosing tactical sequence by miscalculation move confidently as if your opponent will be loosing in the end and maybe he will cower blundering in the process, if your opponents plays fast you play slow and precisely leaving landmine and bait waiting for your opponent to become impatient, if possible leave a tactic for the opponent that wins them material but loses overall and they are more likely to mistake it as a blunder rather that a trap.

Thank you for the content Levy, I enjoyed the Queen’s Gambit and started playing the game after not touching a chess board for 12 years or so, and your content really helped me understand the game more deeply. I really like playing a game or two before a long day of studying and I can imagine I will be playing it to relax after I just started my first “real job” next year, your content really contributes to me enjoying playing myself:)

An interesting topic for me is what happens when you study theory and your opponent just evades it with some passive garbage. I don't mean like him playing Philidor. I mean you playing Benoni and he declining with playing e3. Really hard for me to get edge in such games. And there is the psychological factor that all my preparation goes to waste. And I feel like I am forced into drawish positions.

I play and coach at high level in a duel type sport. I can relate to the event of having an edge over a stronger player. This situation creates a huge tension on yourself who wants to seal that deal ASAP. However this is where I relate with your advice. Here's my take: stay calm and play as if the score was tied, do not look for a bang. Keep the same pace, DO NOT ACCELERATE as you might surpass your capacity but not your opponent's one.
