Hi Becka and Zach. Had to laugh at your 'buggy rice' problem. You should have taken it back for a refund. Glad you enjoyed your beach barbie, with your friends from 'Sail Life'. Thanks for the underwater views. Did you manage to catch any Lobsters for your dinner? Fair winds. Russ. UK. aka. Green Man.

It's no longer Lobster season so we let it be this time, maybe next year! Cheers 😊
A number of other TH-camrs have documented this as being common throughout the Caribbean. Most don’t buy large amounts. “Emily and Clark” document a proven method of stopping the growth by carrying CO2 and using that to displace O2 which kills the bugs.
The insect eggs are harvested with the rice, and found in the rice powder of every bag. Same goes for flour with the flour beetles. Given enough time (and you don't know how long a store had it_) the eggs hatch and the larvae feed on the food.
The bugs come from eggs on the rice when it's being harvested that's why you get them when it's sealed....freeze the rice for 24 hours it will kill the eggs...or if they already hatched freeze for 24 hours and sift out the bugs... they're harmless won't hurt you
☝️This!👍 I think everyone’s got their own preferences for how to do it, like most things involving boat-life. In the ‘80s my impecunious brother and his mates bought enough rice for 6 people/6 months in the UK, stuck it in 1kg poly bags, bunged it in ice-cream tubs and crossed the pond to spend a season in the Caribbean. They just floated most of the weevil out before they cooked it. Same with the flour but the best they could do was sieve it, so they did that and cooked with it anyway. Nobody died, nobody got sick, they had an amazing time. I still prefer the vac/heatseal/freezer method, in my own mind I always imagine that what they ate must’ve had a slightly unusual musty nuttines about it. 😁 Beautiful episode, your reflection on how your lives have changed was heartwarming to hear, that and your appreciation for those changes. Yes, you’re being reborn as sailors and that is not a bad thing to be, not a bad thing at all. Just a thought, if you’re between islands the tidal current can get pretty accelerated. Over the years a few yachties have been lost through underestimating it. It’s not a bad idea to trail a floating line with a fender on the end if you’re going for a swim before you’ve really had a chance to check it out for a tidal cycle or two. That was a bit of big bro advice that I did take, thanked him for it a few months later as well. Keep on keeping on, it’s a pleasure to watch you growing into the rhythm of the sea.
If weevils are already there, either MICROWAVE the offending food item for five minutes or DEEP FREEZE for two hours. Then, when clear, insert the BAY LEAVES (or VACUUM PACK (CRYOVAC) if this is possible). This is for pasta, flour, muesli, rice, biscuits etc., all grain products.
All rice has microscopic weevils, in a hot humid location there grow quickly, the only way to stop them is to put the bag of rice in the freezer for 48 to 72 hours, then its good to put in long term storage.
The bugs are weevils and not exclusive to the Caribbean you will discover. Partially due to the age of products already before finding themselves to the shelves of Caribbean, Pacific, Indian Ocean. I lnow it sounds gross, but the other commenter was right, you can drop it in water and tgey will float to top.... you'll find them in pasta and dried beans too. You can try to keep these provisions a bit longer by discovering them before they proliferate too much.
Weevils. In food aboard ships was very common. For yourselves there is no real solution . Soak the rice and they will float off. On large MV they have chilled dry stores which solve the problem
put the rice in water, the bugs float to the top. Skim them off. No such thing as rice without bugs. Every bag you buy has bugs. can always microwave the rice when you get it for about 2 min per pound. It's just a thing you accept with raw grains.
I think the thought of bugs being in your food doesn't go well with us lot from the UK, I've lived in Australia for 30 years and I still haven't got used to bugs.
So sorry to see the "Rice Bugs" I'm a recipe developer, food writer etc, these lovely little bugs more than likely came with the bags of rice you bought. It's not a great idea to buy that much rice in bulk, due to the nature of how you buy and why you buy in bulk I totally understand. There are some preventions that you can take to help you prevent this happening again! Or reducing it anyways. Okay sorry to say that you are only seeing the adults in the bag, the female will bore into the grains, lay an egg and do this around 300-400 times in one lay. So you can't eat the other grains, also they will have gone into all your other products like pasta, pulses and grains. So I'm afraid you'll have to dump that as well. Hoover out all the holes, nooks and crannies. Wipe down, not with bleach, as this will deter the Weeviles to move to a different part of the boat. Then you'll need to get a spray Called PYRID, spray the nooks & crannies etc, then apply another spray called , NOVACIDE. allow to dry then you can replace your rice, BUT keep in air tight containers, that is a MUST. Try to only have a stock of 1-2 weeks while inshore. If you are making a passage that is going to take longer, I suggest cooking the rice, pulses etc and putting bagged up in your freezer. For that particular passage. Yes I know space is limited, but it will save you money in the long run, as you wont have to throw away unused foods. Just assume that any type of pasta, pulse, grain, almost all dry foods will be affected. Hope this helps. The sprays are available online, plus you might even be able to get them in a good store onshore. Remember it's nothing you've done wrong & most likely come from the store where you purchased the rice, as they store large amounts of grains for passing sailors. Bon voyage
The one thing holding us back from adapting this lifestyle is the question of income. I understand y’all have TH-cam, Patron supporters and a line of merch, but this was your dream all along. Before you found success on TH-cam etc., how did you plan on funding all of this? I know y’all worked really hard to save up and buy a boat, but I find it unlikely that you saved a lifetime of income. Obviously y’all live within budgets and spend very frugally, but I was hoping this episode discussed that difference a little more. As exciting as it probably is to experience it, visiting remote islands in the Caribbean all start to run together. What makes one island worth sailing too verses another? Whether your down in the Grenadines or up in the Exhumes, I challenge y’all to find a way to make every episode unique to the destination, basically giving us future sailors a reason to put a pin on that island as why to visit or avoid. Or not. Your channel, I’m just a casual observer. Best to the both of you!
Totally a valid reason to have doubts, we were planning on saving up and then sailing until we ran a little low on money and getting a temporary job somewhere to up the funds, or failing that, getting a job working remotely (we have friends who work in accounting and marketing who manage to sail still!). The other type of income we have heard works well is property- renting a place out as a means of affording the boat work 'bills' and food. As for the which island we pick, its usually done on what we can do there, the diving, safety and on other cruisers recommendations. Hope this helps!

Nobody died, nobody got sick, they had an amazing time.
I still prefer the vac/heatseal/freezer method, in my own mind I always imagine that what they ate must’ve had a slightly unusual musty nuttines about it. 😁
Beautiful episode, your reflection on how your lives have changed was heartwarming to hear, that and your appreciation for those changes.
Just cook the bugs.......additional protein!
Next time we will 😀🕷
If weevils are already there, either MICROWAVE the offending food item for five minutes or DEEP FREEZE for two hours. Then, when clear, insert the BAY LEAVES (or VACUUM PACK (CRYOVAC) if this is possible). This is for pasta, flour, muesli, rice, biscuits etc., all grain products.
Get used to it. Just boil it as well as the pasta and skim them off the top. Welcome to a never mentioned part of cruising.
Stay safe with Bret coming - Grenada or better Trini.
Thanks Philip, in Grenada at the moment waiting for it to pass 🤞
You should always freeze your rice right after buying it fir a couple of days. It will kill anything that might be trying to live in tub or bag.
That’s great to know, our freezer is teeeeny but when we get a bigger one, we will be sure to do this
All rice has microscopic weevils, in a hot humid location there grow quickly, the only way to stop them is to put the bag of rice in the freezer for 48 to 72 hours, then its good to put in long term storage.
Thats a great tip- our freezer is a tad too small, but hopefully when we upgrade to another bigger one at some point, we can do this!
You need to freeze the bags as soon as you buy them. It will kill the big eggs.
We don’t have a freezer but when we get one will do that!
The bags are perforated to avoid mold, very toxic mold.
Tell us more about the ele motor
The bugs are weevils and not exclusive to the Caribbean you will discover. Partially due to the age of products already before finding themselves to the shelves of Caribbean, Pacific, Indian Ocean.
I lnow it sounds gross, but the other commenter was right, you can drop it in water and tgey will float to top.... you'll find them in pasta and dried beans too. You can try to keep these provisions a bit longer by discovering them before they proliferate too much.
YUMMY, Rice with added protien
Yep 🤣
The weevils will not hurt you. Just rinse the rice and skim them off, then cook your rice
Great to know, thanks!
Weevils. In food aboard ships was very common. For yourselves there is no real solution . Soak the rice and they will float off. On large MV they have chilled dry stores which solve the problem
Thanks for the tip Ken, we’ll give that a go next time!
put the rice in water, the bugs float to the top. Skim them off. No such thing as rice without bugs. Every bag you buy has bugs. can always microwave the rice when you get it for about 2 min per pound. It's just a thing you accept with raw grains.
That’s great to know, and hey, a bit more protein if we miss one or two 😆
Emily & Clark's Adventure CO2 food storage kills those bugs i think
That's really great to know, thanks- will look into it 😊
What a great episode 👌. What is that red thing at 18:23, a fork?😳
Thanks!! I have no idea, what red thing?
Sorry 😂16:23
Eat the bugs - extra protein
What’s the name of the song in this video :’)?! Can’t find it anywhere haha
Hey what do you guys use to film the majority of your footage? Love the videos keep living the life!
I think the thought of bugs being in your food doesn't go well with us lot from the UK, I've lived in Australia for 30 years and I still haven't got used to bugs.
Haha very new to us, but something I guess we will just have to learn to live with 😆
Hi
Hi 👋🏻
♥️♥️🥰🥰
Bon voyage
🤟😀👍...
😁👋
What's a little protein in your rice !
Ahaha that’s one way of looking at it… 😂
Hey, what snorkelling gear is zach wearing? As I have a mustache mines leaks I have to shave the top of it down
Both his mask and snorkel are Cressi, and he doesn’t when it’s cut short but says Vaseline works well to create a seal too ☺️
@@TeuluTribe thank you will give that a try.
🖖🤠
😁
How could a patrol boat run aground in 12 meters of water?
Also unsure!
@@TeuluTribe Storm? Damaged rudder?
@@Kosty19 potentially, I shall do some more research and let you know
put your rice in the freezer
Promo'SM 😓
Wash the rice it’s probably springtails they will float …….your not real sailors yet😂😂😂 eat the rice
Hahah thanks Thomas, I mean last time we ate mouldy bread and apparently that reeeeeaaally wasn’t the right thing to do so at least we know for next time 😆😆
