I find the 2nd one better since basic spells don't use much mana, and you can actually use it as a suppress fire tactics, and not letting your enemy have enough time to recover and use spells
the reason why Frieren taught Fern to only use basic spells (zoltraak/soul track) is because zoltraak is a spell that is new to older demons but it is something every human knows since childhood. In essence, she wants to teach fern to master a spell that is vaguely known to demons to catch them off guard. And practicing a basic spell over and over greatly improves ones mastery on the said spell. This is explained during their fight with Macht.
Soul Track, the "basic" spell is actually one of the newest spells developed by humans. It's highly effective (especially against demons) because it's fast, strong, and spammable. While this is due to the spell's simple nature, this further tricks demons into underestimating it.
Soltrakk/Soultrack was invented by the demon Qual ( the first demon they fought in the anime). It's the ultimate killing spell. Frieren just modified it to be more lethal to demons (remember the words of Lughner: " It is like soul track but more akin to killing a demon). This is not developed by humans. Humans developed a counter for the original soultrack. A counter so effective it made soultrack from ultimate killing spell to basic magic offensive spell. And the counter was named basic defensive spell.
When other mages fought fern, they commented that she fights in a very old way. Even comparing her to fighting someone who's their grandparent. But old tactic, doesn't mean outdated.

Just ban the trolls, Fern.
Next spell: cranking 90s and pumping them demons
I find the 2nd one better since basic spells don't use much mana, and you can actually use it as a suppress fire tactics, and not letting your enemy have enough time to recover and use spells
She's just doing the achievements so she can 100% the game basically
the reason why Frieren taught Fern to only use basic spells (zoltraak/soul track) is because zoltraak is a spell that is new to older demons but it is something every human knows since childhood.

She has come to the simple realization that fighting with honor and dignity gets you dead, but using cheap tactics keeps you alive for 1,000 years.
When other mages fought fern, they commented that she fights in a very old way. Even comparing her to fighting someone who's their grandparent.
But old tactic, doesn't mean outdated.
.....I mean.
If you aren't cheating, you're not trying.
It's not even a war, it's a fight for life.
Anything goes.

Best troll tactic: get trained to suppress your mana, so that arrogant monsters who like to show it off as a status symbol get butthurt when they get pwned in 1v1.
