Me: "n-no im from singapore-" Others: "but you said you're chinese" Me: "well my ancestors were from china, and my mother tongue is chinese but im not from china" Others: *confused looks* Me: "...you know what, my race ain't even that important in this convo so lets just drop it." Once i was waiting for my aunt at the airport and a japanese lady waddled up to me and started speak in full blown japanese. Oh man I lived in Singapore till I was five and it was TOUGH. I’m born in India, but I was exposed to so many different things in Singapore. Like I was this lone Desi kid while everyone around me is various shades of the stereotypical Asian (like Korean or Chinese or Japanese or fricking Singaporean). I was a three year old learning FOUR languages and had no idea why I was doing it.
Leanne_ HWAGEUMMAKNAEJEONJKIMNIDA DUDE. I just went through that a few days ago- I just moved to the US from Singapore (born in Singapore, been in Singapore my whole life) and I had a tough time explaining that to people. And some even mistaken Singapore to be a part of China. Like, what?!??? 😫
I'm half Asian, half white. I used to go to religious school, and everyone there was white. I felt like I was an outsider a little bit because as much as I was the same religion and partially their race, I didn't look like them and I felt like others saw me only as Asian. There were kids there who weren't nice to me. I'm not sure if it was because I joined the school late and wasn't apart of the cliques, or if it was because I was Asian and "was different". Luckily my teachers were really nice and I got through it easily. I've been made fun of for being Asian. It solidly hurts. And when I was surrounded by people who are all full Asian, I felt like the one white person of the group. I felt awkward, because I didn't feel like I fully belonged either. I can't speak my family's native language. When I tell people I'm Asian, people tend to ask me if I speak the language. When I can't, I've felt sort of ashamed I can't understand my relatives. It's been a constant identity crisis trying to determine who I am and what culture I should stick with. But having done enough questioning of both sides, I figured it out. I AM half white and half Asian. I am neither full Asian nor full white. I am both, and I am proud to be both. I try to embrace my cultural crossroads, and own it. Be proud of the cultures you come from, and own it.
Whenever I tell people I'm partially Asian, the always go, "Oh YoU'rE ChInEsE?", "Oh YoU'rE JaPaNeSe?", or " Oh, YoU'rE fRoM nOrTh KoReA?" I'm (half) Vietnamese

I find it funny because I know a completely reverse situation where my friend is full Mexican and people think that she is Asian, like she really pale and does have an Asian feel like she looks like one
Alina im a quarter black and the rest white so im dark but not as dark as most mixed people so i get that im mexican a lot. ive got literally every race though. ive heard that i look asian, hispanic, Indian, native american, just white, black but light skinned, and my actual race: mixed. i just look at them like they're crazy when they say i look hispanic or ASIAN! i have almond shape eyes and hooded eye lids but i dont look asian! idk, its crazy how people will assume your race and be totally off. just ask, please dont assume lol.
Hi, I'm Mexican. I just want to say, not all the Mexican people is brown. Literally you can walk on the capital of Mexico and you will see a lot of white people.
Bro I relate so much to the whole not knowing what you look like. I’m mixed white and Hispanic but I look slightly more white, even though I feel like I relate more to my Hispanic culture. I’m glad there are other people who experience something similar
My cousin is half Mexican, half Korean, and dark skin. And when he goes to Spanish church they try to talk to him in Spanish but the only language he knows is English
I'm half Chinese, half German but everyone, including the asian side of my family, says I look Mexican. I swear, the number of times I've gone to school and had people randomly test their Spanish on me is staggering.
I'm part Japanese and White but most people think I'm either White or Hispanic. Its rather funny to me how some people are surprised that I'm part Asian. Some can tell I'm part Asian, but not all people. What's even funnier is those who can't even believe I'm Asian at all, and it can include other Asians as well. So while I was influenced by Japanese culture, those who don't see me as Asian don't understand how I can relate to Asian culture because I don't look it enough to have quote "experience" it. In this day and age in say the U.S., I'm seeing Whites as feeling like they don't belong in their own country. So while we can bemoan our mixed identities, they can also feel left out in a rather mixed society. It shows how feeling like not belonging can occur in ways we can't always imagine.
thatonegirljessica there aren’t a lot of Cambodians in the US. There is the city in Massachusetts called Lowell that is known for having the second largest Cambodian population in the US.
Holy shit, I didn't know how badly I would relate to this. I didn't learn the language either, and it actively makes me feel less Asian. And the thing about having to ask other people what you look like and then they give you some weird-ass answer hit home for me so hard. I had a friend tell me I looked Native American.
I'm black so I can relate.

Like I know my cultural background, I eat Mexican food all the time, not the taco bell crap like actual Mexican food. People just don't believe that I'm Mexican unless they've met my dad or I'm online. Kinda sucks ngl.
Full Korean checking in. Can confirm that there is no right answer for the fork/chopstick question. I still get it wrong to this day.
AndThen IWasLike I prefer a fork because it just feels fitting for me, but I still have a couple pairs of chopsticks

WHAT WHO DOESN’T TAKE OFF THEIR SHOES eww
Me: do you wear shoes in your house?
Friend: no.
Me: oh good.
Friend: but my sister does
I was seriously grossed out. Also, I'm a germaphobe.
Well I'm white and I always take off my shoes, but I know a lot of people who doesn't and for me it is strange.

Its so funny when you are a Turkish person in Istanbul. And you live in Europe but your school is in Asia. So you wake up at Europe and go to Asia for school than come back Europe to your home. That's my life and I didn't put much thought on to it until then. I guess being Turkish is a whole different level to it.
Them: Are you Chinese???
Me: uhm no-
Them: You look like Chinese!
Me: But I am not-
Them: So you're Japanese??? Oh wait! Are you Korean????

Matthew Ng I am full indian and came to australia when i was 8. I know this family also fully indian and they basically gave up on teaching their 6 and 4 year old hindi. The children only spoke hindi until they started kindergarten and from then on only spoke english. There is also this other 6 year old who I know that is EMBARRASSED to speak hindi which really annoys me tbh.

Barber sees me and talks to me in Spanish

Si. No. Si si. No .....si?

I am Mexican, look Mexican, but not full Mexican. Im about 18% the rest is white. People try talking to me in Spanish and I don't know what they're saying.
I keep coming back re-watching the video. Relatable and gold. It's funny but some experiences are still sad but hey, gonna make the best out of it and accept being who we are. Thanks dude. We should feel the half asian pride 😌 🙏🏼
4:43 These scenes always makes me so happy. Love this video so much 😂
Listen... I'm full Korean, but people ask me all the fuckin time if I'm Mexican. I LOOK KOREAN (ASIAN IN THE VERY LEAST) SO I DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS CONFUSION COMES FROM.
too much time in the sun, Koreans have a hard-on for pale-looking skin
Literally you can walk on the capital of Mexico and you will see a lot of white people.
irene mata hi I'm Mexican too I've told I look asian, once my teacher thought I was korean because I knew a little bit of it.
As a half Asian, I can relate the the shoe part.

Holy shit, I didn't know how badly I would relate to this. I didn't learn the language either, and it actively makes me feel less Asian. And the thing about having to ask other people what you look like and then they give you some weird-ass answer hit home for me so hard. I had a friend tell me I looked Native American.
