Love this conversation. I'm not biracial myself but my cousins are. It took time to understand the overwhelming nature of having so much culture. The African American experience is so overwrought from forced homogeny extending from slave times and understanding our individually lived experiences and differences is still new. A biracial person's experience within the communities they identify with is valid and not lessened by having more than one culture that they can identify with. We really need to move away from the checked box mentality. I hope my cousins and their kids will ever be subjected to "other" ever again.

She learned the Korean language on her own. She was not selected through the KPOP process. She forged her own destiny. Making my point even clearer. Koreans like mixed Black and white because the mixed person may have green eyes or some feature that isn't traditionally black or asian. It's kind of how they feel about South East Asians. They are cool with them, but they shade them whenever they get the chance. Blasians are no different. They just aren't on their menu. Hopefully that will change. Just my opinion on the matter. No hate towards Korean or Korean culture.
Hate to say it but Blasians are more discriminated than Wasians. Unfortunately, it comes down to how you look and your skin color. I wish more ppl would have his perspective
An attractive Blasian vs an unattractive Wasian can make a big difference in today’s society though. In the past for sure things were different but there has been SOME progression in that regard imo

Great conversation. I totally agree as someone with a complex identity where I'm not one or the other, I'm just me and it took a long time to not feel like I was disappointing different cultures
I'm a Filipina-American [with a little bit of Chinese and Spanish] mom of two children who are half Filipino and half Italian with a little bit of Chinese and Spanish. Both of my kids know that they don't look like the average Filipino kids since they're multiracial. My kids identify as Filipino-American despite being multiracial.
This was very good and insightful conversations. I am Black American woman but I lived in Japan and Hawaii so I am familiar with a few Asian cultures. With social media, it is soo unexcusable to be ignorant nowadays. You can learn about any culture with the click of your mouse. There alot of mixed kids growing up so Ryan is providing a well needed platform! Good Guest!
So basically Ryan is saying this is his Black. You don’t get to define how black on either side to include the Black community which has a sub sector of people who think they are on the board of Black Is What We Say, which no one elected them. Chatter with Ryan during COVID about helping build confidence for Blasian Kids.
Ryan's black dad is self-hating, and the way he raised him was messed up. If you listen carefully, Ryan said his dad didn't teach him to appreciate his blackness by introducing him to black history until he started acting like a stereotypical BM. Basically, Ryan's dad didn't want Ryan embarrassing him in the white-Asian community.
Very typical for his kind. From Ryan's family videos he barely knows or spends time with his father's side of the family and that was likely intentional on his father's part.
@@Ice-vm2rc People like to say that BM aren't self-hating -- because it makes them look bad -- but their actions prove otherwise. There are considerably more BW in college and Graduate School than BM. Why would Ryan's father choose to marry and have kids with a non-black woman? Why would he choose to disassociate himself from BP and stay in a non-black community? Make it make sense.
27:10 I've had two co-workers both were Afro-Korean. With My skin tone (caramel ) they fully embraced both sides but with Blackness more because of where they grew up

@@roberth2627 I understand it could be percieved as that, but to long time viewers we know the fung bros are always repsectful and they are very culturally aware.
Racism is systemic. Idk why that wasn’t just said plainly. Pigeon holing black people, and reducing their humanity is why all this is happening. It’s not harmless joking, these thoughts and ideas are formed, and segregated communities keeps these stereotypes real. Being mixed is a joy, because you see how silly cultural identity is. Just be who you are and like what you like, but question both by asking yourself WHY do I believe I am who I am, and WHY do I believe I like what I like. Unpacking those allows you to see all the social conditioning.
I can see where he's coming from having cousins that are a blend of all ethnic groups, they have to move between all cultures. Having to deal with prejudice or if they are passing the privilege, they can't just be. Acceptance is hard for them in general. Most communities already have negative impressions of blk Americans, until they get to actually know us then they realize the stereotypes they see or hear aren't true.
Blacs make sure they talk smack about everyone else and table them as racist to get sympathy from the world .that's the only way they know how to get ahead
This was such a good conversation and I appreciate the nuance that Ryan articulated about his experience. Totally did not expect that since I randomly clicked on this video 😅
No not really. I saw an update on her like a couple or so years back. She moved to China, got married to some rich Chinese guy, and had a son. The son being 3/4 Asian happens to look pretty Asian. And it's Ariana Miyamoto.
I loved the book and the movie, Crazy Rich Asians. I know more than a couple of blasians and wasians. But I really doubt a blasian would do well in Asian countries. The Little Mermaid supposedly "scared" one South Korean father's child because she was black. (I found that comment disheartening since the movie had every person represented as human.)
34:10 It's Black Americans specifically from Slave Descendants that folks of all immigrants have a hard time with. We have a very unique life situation, some our own doing But majority aren't.
As a mixed Asian, I've always been kind of offended when asked to check the box of my race and not given the option to mark two boxes. Like if you can relate.
Maybe I am spoiled with this whole globalism and multi-cultural concept, but I think it's a bad idea to gate keep. Everyone should be taking the best that other cultures have to offer to bring some of that happiness into their own lives. As I've said to people before, forget about percentages, it is your birthright to be able to inherit the heritage. Hell, I don't even think you need to have a certain type of DNA to love a culture.
You said something telling. "Everyone should be *taking* the best that other cultures have to offer" It's the taking that is the problem. People just take, they don't share. They take without getting permission. They take without giving credit. They take while they disrespect the people they are taking from. This is why people want to gate-keep. Because if people were graciously participating in the culture of others, there would be no problem. But people have to be A$$holes about it. So there's a lack of trust.
@@sjacks3281 Well, I agree that not acknowledging where things come from or disrespecting people is bad, but the other side of the coin are people who are unwilling and unforgiving when it comes to sharing. Both sides of the spectrum is bad. I wouldn't like it if people did the things you're talking about and I don't know if there is going to be a perfect solution, but I genuinely want people to be happier.
I have tons of cousins that look 100% asian but they are mixed with black (Jamaican), back home they move differently vs when in the US ! Ryan is not wrong with the stereotypes in entertainment and society overall - the closeness to whiteness is more "accepted" ! Boy, do I have mixed story experiences growing up in the US." they are not both equal" (blasians - wasians) real convo to have. I will say this, I don't have the energy to be the teacher anymore, maybe ppl need to go beyond their fence and learn and educate themselves. RACISM IS DIFFERENT IN ASIA ? IMO I understand nuances however it is still driven by white supremacy so ...
Well, it depends if the “bi cultural” individual is mixed race. It’s easier to navigate two (or more) cultures in the so-called west when you are one race to be fair.
There we go again trying to tell people who they are ; their DNA and how they should identify. Why do people think they have a right to tell how you should identify? This racial category construct has only worked for those who use it for division, discrimination and archaic stereotypes. What are we going to do next? Should we prove that all white people are 100% European? What if they have Arabic or Eurasian blood? Are all Native Americans going to pass someone’s idea of how pure or mixed they are? My granddaughter is not only mixed race but also part Catholic Irish, Jewish and Orthodox Christian. They celebrate all these religions, cultures and races . I think she is very blessed to belong to all these groups and doesn’t have to explain what percent of her DNA belongs to which race. African American are mixed just as lots of white Americans are not pure European. The history of the US makes it easier to understand why. There are lots of white Americans who have some black, Native American blood in them. Unless they are truly from Europe, chances are they are not pure either. That is the elephant in the room of these race discussions. There is more to it than meets the eye but most people are scared of the discussions because of the political, economic, social and systemic impact of racism in America.
@@funkthat His views tend to be racist and sexist in they way young men who are not very bright are in high school who desperately need adult male guidance

One of my employees who is Chinese and married a Greek man, she said she never taught her kids Cantonese because their kids don't look Chinese. Kinda messed up IMO, I mean unless you're ashamed of your culture why deny that for your kids?
I'm curious to know how some Blasians truly feel about the anti-Asian hate. When one side attacks the other side you're both a part of? That's gotta suck because what do you do?
I think he touched on that when he said both groups getting attacked and receiving hate , then both parties attacking each other . That both groups should learn to work with each other .,but that’s easier said then done .
@16:00, Um it’s a fact you are mixed race, both - it is what it is. Perhaps, they shouldn’t say that to you, as it can come across as rude. However, as black people are allowed to have their own group and not want to be represented, nor lumped together with people who are mixed race. It contributes to black people’s erasure. Another question is who are you to tell black people that they cannot differentiate themselves from mixed race people? Chill. The reaction towards a black people versus a Chinese person saying that statement was telling!

Filipinos don't claim to be the Asian blacks. They (we) claim to be the Asian Latinos or Mexicans. It's due to also being colonized by Spain - similar religion, customs, etc. Re: the present Ms Philippines, Fung bros did an episode re: her recently. Yes she's Blasian. She faced a lot of difficulties & bullying while she was growing up because of her skin color. IMO, she won because she was the best candidate for her time - it's not due to being "woke" or PC. Based on netizens remarks, there were many comments of "why her?" - she isn't pretty enough, she's dark, she isn't full Filipino, etc. Those comments weren't there when the Ms PH was a Wasian (e.g Pia Wurtzbach, Catriona Gray) or even mixed Asian (Venus Raj - half Indian, Michelle Dee - w/ Chinese ancestry).

I'd say this is true, wasian fetish is ridiculous.
No one is discriminatory towards blacks or asians, anymore than blacks and asians are discriminatory towards others... give it up.
Maybe in the dating sense, yes. But wasian will not face racial profiling like blasians do (especially those who look more black than Asian).
@@ryryjagoat9494 Blasians girls are nice, though, I think Blasian men might find it harder in the dating scene unless they're rich and skilled like Tiger Woods. Sydney Park is a beautiful Blasian actress.
Great guest. He was awesome on The Morning Show!
Ryan has a great perspective on things
This was an insightful talk. Get it ore regularly
And apparently he doesn't like Dominicans either
Very typical for his kind. From Ryan's family videos he barely knows or spends time with his father's side of the family and that was likely intentional on his father's part.
@@readyornot27 He spends time with his fathers side of the family. Stop assuming shit r*tard
He was not self hating shut up
@@Ice-vm2rc People like to say that BM aren't self-hating -- because it makes them look bad -- but their actions prove otherwise. There are considerably more BW in college and Graduate School than BM. Why would Ryan's father choose to marry and have kids with a non-black woman? Why would he choose to disassociate himself from BP and stay in a non-black community? Make it make sense.

You've been brainwashed and live in your self-imposed box.
Very good episode and guest.👏🏾👏🏾🧠🧠
I can see where he's coming from having cousins that are a blend of all ethnic groups, they have to move between all cultures. Having to deal with prejudice or if they are passing the privilege, they can't just be. Acceptance is hard for them in general. Most communities already have negative impressions of blk Americans, until they get to actually know us then they realize the stereotypes they see or hear aren't true.

"Everyone should be *taking* the best that other cultures have to offer"
It's the taking that is the problem.
Good point the. Black community is very accepting of all cultures period
I am afromexican Filipino Italian German Spanish afromexicans many times can be mixed with indigenous
Bi cultural and or bi race people go through it in America
Well, it depends if the “bi cultural” individual is mixed race. It’s easier to navigate two (or more) cultures in the so-called west when you are one race to be fair.
HIS FATHER MIXED.

I'm curious to know how some Blasians truly feel about the anti-Asian hate. When one side attacks the other side you're both a part of? That's gotta suck because what do you do?

It's good that Filipinos are becoming more accepting of Blasians. Several of them (who have been in show business in one way or another) - Wilma Doesnt: a model/ actress, Luke Mijares (singer), Jay Rey (singer for Black Eyed Peas), Jinky Oda (actress) - in their interviews, they said that they all experienced bullying during childhood.
