- As popular as the Mustang was in 1965, almost twice as many full size Fords were sold. This Galaxie 500XL was one of the sporty ones.

I was never a Ford fan as everything about them was sloppy, but they have their followers.....
Yup, with the VIN, you win: 5 for 1965 model year, E for Mahwah, NJ assembly, 68 for Galaxie 500 XL two door fastback with bucket seats, X for 352 V8 with four barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Mahwah, NJ plant operated from 1955 to Friday June 20, 1980 and then became Sharp Corporation's US headquarters for a time. Today Jaguar/Land Rover has their US headquarters on that site, along with Amazing Savings. It's located in Bergen County, NJ and replaced the Ford Edgewater plant on 309 River Road in Edgewater, NJ in 1955. The song "Johnny 99" on Bruce Springsteen's 1982 album Nebraska makes reference to the Mahwah, NJ plant closure in the lyrics.
We got the tag, we can brag, and go all the way, don't you say? 63C for Ford Galaxie 500 XL two door fastback with bucket seats, M for Wimbledon White exterior paint, 76 for Black vinyl interior trim, 15D for Thursday April 15, 1965 production, 13 for New York sales district, 1 for 3.00:1 rear end ratio, non-locking, and 4 for Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. There was some sort of dealer sticker on the trunk, but you weren't close enough for me to get a look at it.
One tire fryer, one wheel peel, one peg leg, I like all of them for describing a non-posi rear end. LOL.
A Sure Grip or Positive Track rear makes a lot of difference in rear drive vehicles but unfortunately many didn't choose this option and someone like me who only purchased used vehicles felt lucky when said vehicles came with that option.
@@garymckee8857 Yup, my coworker had ordered a 1970 LS6 4 speed Chevelle SS new and from I remember him saying, he had to tell the sales person what to order as the guy really didn't know. He still has the car, and it maybe has 30,000 miles on it at best from what I remember.

@@stepheng3667 1967 Galaxie 500 four door, 289 two barrel with the VIN for the win: 7 for 1967 model year, G for Chicago, IL assembly, 54 for Galaxie 500 four door sedan with bench seat, C for 289 V8 with two barrel and the rest (which you should edit and take out) is the production sequence. The Chicago, IL Ford plant opened in 1924 and still operates today. It's located at East 130th Street and Torrence Avenue in Chicago, IL.
@@googleusergp Yes! My older brother owns this vehicle. It was the early days of Ebay Motors in 2005 when he found this for sale on a farm in Iowa so he bought it for $2200. A bare bones car but it was and still is super clean. We are not Ford guys neither, but I have to say this is a great riding car. He hasn't spent a dime on it in about 10 years. It just fires right up and cruises, you just have to remember there are no power brakes LOL. His dream car is a 64 Impala SS but ti doesn't look like he is ever going to get one. Ironically, now he is living in Windsor Ontario on Riverside Drive with a view of the GM Renaissance Center.😀
My grandparents had a white 65 Galaxie XL, it had a 390, automatic, white with an olive color interior, bench seats. Got my driver's license in that car in 1969. Loved that boat.
friend of mine has one now .. less than 40 thousand miles one owner .. white with black bucket seats ..
Love the olive color Granpai had a 70 La Manas in that color in and out looked like a Italian Steff car 🤓🤓
We had a silver '66 4-door, 390 auto that I learned to drive in. Sister eventually totalled it. It was a great highway cruiser.
You would be surprised how well that thing would clean up. Very solid near complete car. Someone please save it!

@Ken Craig I bought a 1962 Corvair Rampside off my buddys Dad about 6 years ago it sat in his backyard for at least 25 years. Put a brand new fuel tank from Clark’s Corvair the timing right and cleaned the carbs rebuild the single master brake system it had. Stoped on a dime by the way. Truck ran like a champ had a lot of rust though. I think all vehicles can be brought back to life. Sold it about 3 years ago live in San Diego guy came from Las Vegas he brought a trailer to buy it.

Hard to know if it's solid. Looking at how the trunk lid wiggled when Steve tried the key I feel like this car shows better than it actually is underneath.
@@mikep.5517 Sitting over dirt, even if it's not belly-down on top of it, will rust a car out quickly, especially an older car like this. It looks like it's been there for well over a decade, so I wouldn't bet on having much left in the way of floors, either inside or in the trunk. Does anyone make replacement floor panels for these?
The 64 is my all time favorite car. But the 63, 65, 66, and 67 are awesome as well
Learned to drive in Dad’s 65 Custom in 74! He worked the production line building those in St Paul Mn. Really brings back great memories of him and those 65s! Thanks Steve and hope you’re doing well!
My cousin had a 67 Galaxy 390 I believe. He was the son of a pastor in a small farm town in Nebraska. One day a police officer wanted to pull him over and because he had beer in the trunk and was under age he decided to run. He was going so fast the police officer decided to stop chasing him but he eventually caught up with my cousin when the car ran out of gas. Lost his license for a little while. But that was nothing compared to dealing with my Aunt.

@@Daniel-fd3wp in the old days when a small town might have two or three cop cars, it was tempting for the townies to run, knowing all the back roads as well as the cops did (since there was nothing else to do in your spare time, no video games just pinball machines and they closed after 6pm). but the real deal was, the cops typically knew every hot car in town. as soon as you bought one, the old school cop would pull you over for some dumb thing that made no sense...but they had you in their notebook. so when someone reported you doing burnouts or whatever, if they got the color and the car and your custom chrome rims as the description...the cop knew where you lived and paid you a visit.

Oh, to be a 25-year-old guy with $4000 burning a hole in your pocket in January 1965! Which will it be - the all new Galaxie with the sharp, square styling? The Impala with the soon-to-be iconic Coke bottle taillights? The Polara that has finally been wiped clean of Virgil Exner weirdness? Or maybe take a look at the GTO that made so much noise over at Pontiac last year? Oh well - guess I’d better make the dealer tour and take each of them for a test drive or two!

My Dad took us to the Ford Garage in 1966 to see the new models, right out front was a white. 7Liter 2 door hardtop red interior 4 speed transmission. I was 14 then and remember it like yesterday. Thanks Steve for the wonderful job you do!
Do not disrespect the older cars !!! There were NO 7 liters back then. It was a 427 !!!!!

My parents bought a new 65 LTD in spring of 66. It was mist blue with a blue interior, had a 390, no A/C nor Power brakes. My 12 year old self LOVED that car! The styling, the power, the smooth, quiet ride all were great. Parents traded a 63 Galaxie with a 223 6 cyl, 3 on the tree and no P/S or P/b. Dad hated that car! The LTD seemed like a rocket compared to the 63.

That 427 might not be as hot as the hemi but boy was it a savage. The first vehicle I bought, I was in 11th grade, it was 1995. A guy from the next town over ran a salvage yard and he was a Ford lunatic, so every tow truck, service truck etc was old school Ford.
He had a 1971 F350 Marmon Herrington 4x4 and he had built it as a tug truck for when the yard was muddy. 427fe from a Galaxie, np435 trans, divorced np205 transfer case, did I mention it was a savage? I lusted after the truck since I was probably 7 yrs old. Through a cosmic alignment of the stars, I was able to buy the truck near the end of my junior year and let's just say I was the clutch dumping King throughout my senior year. Just a fond recollection of my experience with the 427 and the beginning of my life long love affair with the 67-72 Ford trucks and the beautiful FE powerplants.
My parents had the 1965 Country Squire. 289/Cruise-o-Matic, but no AC. That single master cylinder was a hazard; the old man lost a brake line pulling into a parking space at the butcher's and hit the wall. In New England many of these were scrapped with rusted/broken frames. They failed just ahead of the rear wheels.
Beautiful car styling! Specially with the bucket seats and console in the middle! Still restorable!
I inherited my grandfather's 65 Galaxie 500. It had four doors. I liked the car, it was fun cruising it it. It didnt have front bucket seats.
My dad had a 1965 Galaxie 500 that he bought used in 1975. It was in really sweet condition. Color was kind of a burgundy. He drove it for several years before the motor gave out. Its one of his cars I'd love to have.

Hi Steve, When I was 14 Years Old my next store Neighbor, Miss Hancock, Had a 65 galaxy convertible, 289 She owned it from New, It was hit slightly in the Back, She was going to junk it, Growing up I was friends with Here son George ,I bought the car at 14 , But my Mother and father would not let me Keep it in the Yard, I remember being so disappointed, I had to sell It. But steve the car was in Great shape, Just Had to share. Great Video's like always

Super cool cars! As a young man I owned 3 different Galaxies. A 66 with the 289, a 67 with the 352 and a 69 with the 429. My favorite was the 69. It was bright red with a white hardtop and would pass anything but a gas station!
The 352 was dropped for '67, last year '66. It lived on two more years in pickups before being replaced by 360.
Mine was Cascade Green with beige bucket seats and black convertible top. What I liked about it was the fact that the back window was glass and not plastic.

Good deal! I hung onto my 66 fastback coupe, 289 car. Runs absolutely perfect. Building a 410 motor now for it. You are right these square bodies are super cool and carry a lot of grand National racing nostalgia.
My very first car I owned was a 1963 1/2 Galaxie XL I bought off my brother-in-law for $20.00 in 1971. It had the 352 two barrel engine with the MX automatic transmission and had 119,000 on the odometer. I used it as my auto shop project overhauling the engine.

That's funny because my second car in 1974 was a 1962 Galaxie 500 convertible with a 292 v8. Not an XL but a good car for an 17 year old. I payed $50.00 for it. I took that car everywhere .It was good as long as I kept oil in it.

@@willhorting5317 right, the prices really shot off after the stock market crash of 1987, since the art market was ready to burst its bubble and collector cars like V16 cadillacs were all bought up.
somewhere in the early or mid 1990's I nabbed my 1986 GT Mustang, registered turn key, for $2,500. Those days are going, going gone, too. now that gets you a parts car.

Don't remember seeing any 65 xl s in the 60s. In 66/68 as a teenagerI parked cars at a night club in Monroeville Pa and I drove them all, croslys to Bentleys. What a fun time! My dad had the 66 Ford HT 352 copper/brown

Hi-it's "that guy" again. The newly introduced LTD was the top of the line in 1965, and disc brakes became optional in 1966.
Re-the 352-X Code From 1964-66 the only 352 offered in the US was 9.3 compression regular fuel 4-Barrel, at 250 HP.
However, there was, for the Canadian market only, a 352 2-Barrel 220 HP version, I don't know the code. There were significant powertrain variations
between the US and Canada in these years. For example, in '65 there were no 289 full-sized cars in Canada, you went from the 240 six to the aforementioned 352, then 2 390s, a 300 HP version, and for some strange reason, the 330 HP solid lifter police version. This latter choice was listed in retail sales brochures in Canada, but not in the US, where it was a police only item.The 427 WAS however, available in Canada, too. Then in 1966, the 289 became available in Canada, but no 352, which was around in the US for 1 more year in 250HP 4V form.. In Canada in '66, the only 390 available was the 2-barrel Y-code regular fuel version,
whereas in the US the 4-barrel 315 HP Z-Code was also available.. 427 and 428 choices were the same for both countries. Why this was done I'm not sure, but I suspect it was a pre-Autopact local production issue. Before 1967, Canadian cars also had a shorter option list, with items such as the Safety Convenience Panel with power locks, Speed Control , AC,
AM-FM radio, etc not available. Finally in 1967, offerings were identical on either side of the border.

I'll beg to differ, Ford offered AM-FM as option beginning '63. I had one in a '64 and looked long & hard to find it.
I had an Oakville built '65 Galaxie 500xl with a 390/4 speed back in the 80's. Not a great handling car compared to other old cars I had from the era but it was a fun car with a good amount of torque
I like my old cars with a manual. I like the control you have anyways,like lifting off the gas and it slows down not like an auto that freewheels on ya.
Doesn't matter if it's a 4 or 3 speed manual but make it a manual.
That hadda make it more fun to drive, for sure.
I'm a Chevy guy, but.....as a kid I saw one and always liked the lines and styling. I still want one with a 390 and a 3 spd I believe they had. Excellent info!
Yup three on tree was common, any automatic was optional. I owned a '64 that was 390 & three on tree, at least before I converted to 4-speed. Also owned a '66 LTD with 390 & automatic. That car also had non-power drum brakes, discs were slow to catch on.

agree with you, when i grew up (back when i took pictures of cars with my 110 camera), second gen chevelles were popular since the SS396 models were still affordable...and i thought gee, the Galaxy is nearly the same size/weight since it was downsized for this generation. just build a hot enough 390....there was a tripower 401 hp model, so it wouldn't be hard back then. now it's like building a flathead :) I still believe Ford could have really built a 390 to compete with the Chevy 396 and Mopar 383, but Ford wanted you to spend more for the 427/428. not that the 390 was a slouch in 1967 with 427 ft lbs of torque, if you lived in a small town where the 396's came in 325-350 hp, you had a chance.but against an L78....
going off memory, i think 1963 was when Galaxy put synchros on the first gear of the three speed, so they advertised now the car had "three gears" since no one wanted to shift into an unsynchro'd first gear. in the earlier years, you could get an overdrive off the 3 speed, that would be a fun car to show up in at a cruise night. not cheap to build, but would stand out as something different.

I remember reading years ago that the full size 1965 ford was as revolutionary to the 1964 etc as the 1949 Ford compare to their previous models.

My relative back in the late 1960's early 1970's had a 1966 galaxie 500 2 door white w/ red interior. The tail lights being more square. Always thought it was a sharp looking car. Came with a 289/ automatic . Had a little under the dash switch you could flip the sound from the front to the back . For a ten year old that was amazing at the time.
I am a GM and Mopar guy, however this is one of the Fords I do like.

Great find in the period road tests. I remember my elders at that time considered things like AC and power steering as excessively complex and heavy for a performance car, and likely to cause extra maintenance issues. It wasn’t until the 1970s that my father trusted power windows enough to accept that option in a new car.
so true! when we were kids, we thought, "wow, AC costs 20 hp?"
then we get older and say, "eh, it only takes up 20 hp"
rat rodders love to hate on billet street rods from the 1970's, but they don't get that was the original hot rodders who survived and became empty nesters. after years of hardtail beezers and harleys, they wanted a more comfortable hot rod with a reliable targetmaster 350 under the hood.
it happens to all of us :) i moved out of my small town at age 18, saying, "this place sucks! it shuts down at 6pm, there's nothing going on, there's no kids my age". now i'm back and i say, "i love this place! it shuts down at 6pm, there's nothing loud going on, there's still few kids around playing midnight parts...."
In Northern Wisconsin in the 1960s nobody bought their cars with air conditioning. My father complained that the power brakes of the era were too sensitive so he would buy a car without that if available.
Still one of my top favorites, definitely from my favorite era of NASCAR
Had a buddy with a '66 Gal 7 Liter, Buckets and console. Loads of fun.
I had one of these in highschool. Bought it at a yard sale for $150. Drove the wheels off it, sold it for $500 a year later. Mine was white with the 390.

My parent had a white 66 Galaxie 500 two door hardtop with a 390 big block, factory a/c and power windows/locks/seat! Bought slightly used from Ford factory worker who bought it new and built at Norfolk, Va Ford plant!😁🛠️
My first car, 64 Ford XL500 Convertible
A friends Mum had inherited 2 1967 Galaxies here in Australian(from her Dad).
One was an Aussie delivered Fisher body 4 door (used Oz Fairlane steering gear to do the conversion & modified dash), and also a Green 2 door that came from an Alameda Ford dealer, it had cool rear quarter windows that wound down on a diagonal into the rear guards.
Both had a 390 & Auto, bench seats & air con
My Grandfather bought a 1965 Galaxy 500 fastback new. It was a light blue metallic color with a black vinyl roof and had dark blue interior.
My Father who was a mechanic installed an aftermarket under dash A/C system in when it was about a year old.
My Grandfather owned the neighborhood tavern. He must have felt cool sporting that car around.
I remember ridding in it as young kid and taken by its beautiful lines.
My parents had one, great memories.
An auto shop buddy from high school had a 65 Galaxie 4 door with a 352 4bbl double pumper with dual exhaust. From the factory! It was a FOMOCO carb!

Mom had a '67Galaxie fastback 390 as a first car, yellow with black vinyl top. It had a leak in
the roof, right over the driver. One day my dad said he was taking it to get fixed and came home
with a new Hornet.
A friend drove a 1963 & 1/2 500XL with a white vinyl top over btonze. I drove a '65 Park Lane convertible with buckets & that console, & a tac on the Metcufy Multi drive.
A guy I used to run around with in the late 70's had a 65 500XL that he dropped a 428 in, funcar!
From about 1958 all the way to 68 Ford had the optional "Equa lok" limited slip differential. An extremely rare option. They were all 2 pinion gear 28 spline differentials. New for 1969 they came out with the "traction lok" they were offered in 2 or 4 pinion and 28 or 31 spline configurations.
Nice car. I remember one older guy still driving his green Galaxy in Norridge in the early 2000's. Good condition, unrestored. A time capsule.
Had a friend in high school had a black '65 with the headlight covers. He had put some nice rims and wide tires cleaned it up real well, was a great looking car and impressively fast for a large four door.
Sweet car . Always been a Chevy guy but in my later years have come to really like the styling of those Ford's '65 -'67 Fairlane in particular

Back in the early-80’s a guy I went to high school with had a ‘65 Galaxie that was in beautiful condition! Light blue with a white hardtop, a nice set of chrome reverse rims and RWL tires - even though it was a four door it had a perfect stance and was considered to be one of the “cooler” cars in our high school parking lot! A few years out of high school he jumped out of an airplane and his parachute didn’t open…….🪂
I bought a new 1963 Galaxie 500 XL, 390 (terrible engine,lifters pumped up at 4,600 Rs), 4 on the floor with console, MANUAL steering and brakes. Believe it or not, the steering and brakes were fine, my wife at the time drove the car with no problem.

Very good. The first car a bought was a 65 Galaxie 500 2 door. Only mine had the 250-6 and manual steering and brakes.
No 250 till '69, & they are physically smaller, used in Mustang & Fairlane. The 240 was base Custom/Galaxie engine. First year for 240 was '65, prior used 223 that was derived from Ford's first 215 OHV 6cyl engine introduced in '52.
@@tombryant1104 I was going to say this. The 240 is a de-stroked 300. I have a 240 in my '77 F150, even though the last year for the 240 was 1974 - think my truck was assembled from a parts pile, and its 300 went elsewhere... At least I have the higher-compression 240 head.
I stuck a screw driver through a spark plug hole and hand-cranked a revolution, and the spark plug only moved close to three inches. A 300 would be close to four inches of stroke.

My father ordered and purchased a 1965 Galaxie 500 2 Dr. Red with black vinyl interior with a 289 engine that over heated all the time the engine was 2 small for the car. It had no air-conditioning so I remember long hot trips with vinyl seats. And got my finger crushed on my left hand still deformed to this day because he closed the driver's side door on my finger in March 1965 I was 2 years old.
Today, someone would sue Ford saying that the doors were too strong and win a lawsuit. One night, my parents were picking me up from religious instruction/released time after school and I got in the back seat of our 1983 Coupe DeVille. I wasn't all the way in and my mother closed the door full force and it got me right in the ankle. Yikes. LOL. We all survived....
As an eight year old (1957) we went on a vacation trip , straight shot Pittsburgh to Niagara Falls. Got there, parked right at falls, I got out of the car and slammed the door on my thumb. Ouch vacation.
Those Galaxies were nice cars held up well also.
Cool,I really like those buckets.I have a 65 custom 500,clean no rust,3 on a tree.I found a nice 65 c5ae sideoile shortblock,,what a dinosaur ,kinda putting together a R code,but those factory header type exhaust manifolds cost a fortune,and those Pyrex headlight covers cost almost as much as the car,if you can locate a set.The 65s are a nice riding car also since in 1965 they switched to the coil spring rear suspension. Keep up the good work Steve.
Thanks Guys! That car would have been beautiful when new. All the designs with the stacked headlights that were canted forward on top looked great, like the were charging forward.
A good friend of mine had a Galaxie 500 XL with a 390 and a 4 speed. A great looking car that could really keep up with the traffic.
1st car I ever drove was 65 Galaxy 500. My brother let me drive it in a big sand pit. Did I mention Dukes of Hazzard was all I watched on tv? Saw a sand ramp and hit it. Never got to drive that car again..
My first car was a 67 Galaxie 500 2 door . The fastback hardtop roof was shared with the LTD and XL but they had much smaller quarter windows . The non power brakes with power steering was actually the common set-up as I remember only those with the optional front discs needed the assist - the big drums were very self energizing . Mine was Candy Apple red with a black vinyl top and the deluxe red interior which was much like the Mustang Pony interior minus the horses on the tooled inserts .In 67 there were 2 390 2 bbls . The Y code was 265 horses since it was limited by the FMX trans and the H code which was 275 with the C6 . I still remember the idle spec as 425 rpm in drive and it was smooth and silent just like those ads comparing the big Ford to Rolls Royce.Big 67s are rare even back in the 70s because of frame rot issues with the 67 - the boxed rails rooted away behind the front torque boxes turning them into C body Mopars or F and X body GM cars .
I really like the 1965 Galaxie. I built the AMT model that was available at the time.
Plymouth also did the stacked head lamps from 1965 - 1968. It's almost as though they copied each other.
Looks like that 65 Galaxie, would be a good project for someone, always like it's body styling.
Oooohhhh Those Beautiful Trapezoid taillights. In High School had dad's car out for lunch--Flat Tire. Slotted Bumper post jack right rear, Wooops car rolls forward, top of that jack right into that Not so Beautiful Trapezoidal taillight. LOL Lucky I was able to get one from the Salvage yard to replace it on my High School salary from "Dog-N-Suds" Once More A Beautiful set of those Trapezoid Taillights. lol lol

My dream 65 Ford would be the labeled as the “Custom” not the Galaxie. It would be the 2 door as this in the dark burgundy, non-metallic paint, with black interior. It would have the 427 cid, with a 4 speed manual. It would have those clear headlight lenses that fit over the stacked headlights. I remember the simple dog dish Ford hub caps, to set off the wheels. That would be awesome!
These Galaxies were available in Australia as four door sedans with a choice of 289 or 390 engines and automatic transmissions.
Why four doors that kills it.
@@terrencegiordan2775 we had sedans only due to the low production numbers. Galaxies were marketed as luxury cars and only sold 500-1000 units annually so to have two body styles ( coupes and sedans) would not be economically viable, add to that was the fact that four door sedans were the big sellers. We did have private imports of different body styles that were very expensive as on top of the price of the car you had import costs and taxes plus the cost of converting to right hand drive.

Great video on an awesome car! My dad's buddy bought a loaded 500XL in 1965 in tropical turquoise with a white roof. What a car, it looked fantastic compared to everything else in the neighborhood. When I got my licence I went to look at used one with my dad and when he opened the hood it was all engine, he said "No way" and crushed my dreams but maybe saved my life. Cheers!
These cars drive so much nicer than the 64 and previous, rear leaf spring cars. Really a totally different driving experience.

Just a few other points: 1) While they weren't strictly stacked, Continental Division had diagonally mounted headlights in the 1958-61 Mark III, IV, and V, sort of like the Buicks from the same era. 2) You mentioned how well the Mustang sold in it's first 18-month model year, but remember that Chevy sold well over twice as many Impalas alone, not including Bel Airs and Biscaynes, in that car's 12-month 1965 model year. Apples to oranges, I know, but still, it kinda puts things in perspective. 3) How about an episode about the Buick Special Sedanet beside today's Galaxie some time? I've always loved that bodystyle! 4) While I'm making requests, dd I see a Loewy Studebaker sitting at the Galaxie's 4 o'clock? A talk about that would be great! Thanks, Steve, your Junkyard Crawls are lways entertaining, and I often say to myself, "Hmmm... I didn't know that". And I like to think that I know a lot about cars! (Although there's a chance that I might be able to outgun you about Corvairs, having had a dozen of the little guys over the past 43 years!)

My parents had a 1965 Ford station wagon. I got my license in that car. I rememberbthst car fondly!
Wife’s aunt had a 65 galaxy and had a terrible time with the paint edges get flaking off Ford repainted it once then after that they just sent her a chat and told her good luck. We owned 66 galaxy 500 XL. Just like the one you just showed and we loved it I can’t remember where I sold a car and I sure wished I had it back.
I had a 66 model with 390, ac, and two door and factory duals. Still have the title and all the paperwork for it plus build sheet.
Rode in one back in the Sixties. I remember the ride as good. The LTD model above the one portrayed had a bitchin ride they say. Thanks for these here videos.

I've been waiting for the Galaxie 500 video. Very under rated cars when I take my 66 Galaxie out a lot people never knew they existed or the people who do know them get excited see one and even more shocked see a 2 door fastback.
