  • From the live album of the so acclaimed English pop rock group The Smiths. It was released in September 1988, just over a year after the group split. The recorded show was performed at the National Ballroom in Kilburn, England, on October 23, 1986. A staggering and unique band performance by Morrissey, Johnny Marr (guitar), Mike Joyce (drums), Andy Rourke (bass) and Craig Gannon (guitar).

I was at this gig. Being 17 years old at the time, most gigs I went to involved drinking so much I could barely recall the performance. Fortunately, for this gig, travel delays meant we only had time for a couple of pints, so as a result, I have a very clear memory of it. Very grateful for the effort that has gone in to synching the professional audio with the amateur video.

It's all water under the bridge now, but they really are a sad story......Marr and Morrissey's fuckin egos tore everything asunder. There are even factions to this day, who despise either Morrissey or Marr. They are a great example of how difficult it is to keep something musically great going.

'Loud loutish lover treat her kindly, though she needs you more than she loves you.' and 'It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind.' are two of the greatest lines in music.

    • @drjohnclare

Hands down the best performance of any singer, guitarist, drummer, bassist, best performance of a song or any music or band. The comments of this convinced me to keep returning to this clip.
The intro gives me chills, Morrissey's singing of 'the soil falling over my head' has so much emotion.
And also, 'while they're in each others arms' is executed amazingly, I don't think any of the other versions give justice to this part.

For 2 years I would listen to this song and fall asleep almost every night. Longing to be loved and accepted. Wanting desperately to not feel so forgotten and alone. Soon after that horrible couple of years I found who I thought was (and pathetically still do) my soulmate. It was absolute bliss. We dated for just under two years. I was happy. I felt loved. Her too. I was more confident than I felt ever in my life. It was truly magical. For the first time in my life I felt true true love. And to feel it towards you. That my friends is one of the most special feelings.
She friend zoned me. All of the sudden she changed, I saw it coming but couldn’t do anything about it. Especially because I brought it up multiple times in those last few months. But she denied it and said we were fine. Until one day she dumped me. She wanted to stay friends, did for a little. But I couldn’t do it. To hear her say she didn’t mean to “lead me on” and she can’t be in a relationship “right now” cut through my heart and into my soul. Dating for almost 2 years yet she was leading me on. She could be in a relationship, just not with me. Everything she ever told me was a lie.
Then to watch her move on so fast. To see her not cry or be affected at all by losing us showed me how stupid and wrong I was to believe someone could love me.
I now find myself returning to this song and it breaks me down. But in a completely different and much more painful way. I walk with a heavy heart now. I know I need to love myself and find comfort in myself. I have been doing really well in that department. But there is a piece of me that is hurt, missing. I felt a love that I don’t think will ever leave. Even now. I’ve had a few girlfriends but none like this. I thought I finally found the one. But she was lying to me the whole time I guess. I still feel horribly blindsided by her. I still can’t believe it. She took what little trust I had in others and in my self and squashed it.
I wish I could stop feeling this for her. After all she’s done and me cutting her out. I still can’t stop. I don’t think I’ll love like that again. And that’s okay. I am okay with being alone. I’m slowly accepting the solitude and loneliness. Accepting the constant endless pain. Not in a negative way but just in a “life is pain” way. I don’t know. This song is absolutely fantastic

I remember the first time I heard it on the Rank album. By far the best version. Still makes my spine tingle when I listen to it as I often do. In fact, pretty much every song on Rank captures the emotion more effectively than the studio versions. I often wonder what more The Smiths would have created has they stay together a few more years. Magical.

  • @g.s.5196

I distinctly remember when I first heard this song.
I had heard snatches of Smiths’ songs before, but never actually listened to them, and there was this late night radio show I always listened to while driving back home, alone.
The album was coming out and they premiered quite a few songs, including this one, and I went Wow, you just nailed it, man: that’s me, that’s the story of my life…
But I also remember thinking, This powerful, haunting voice gotta be studio magic; no way you can hit and keep those notes, and modulate between them so effortlessly.
Well, this recording just proved me wrong.
