      @@kevintemido there is no point going monk when you have nothing because you're not giving leaving anything. It's kinda easier.
      But to leave everything material when you have it - it's harder. So if you still decide to become monk, this decision kinda has more weight to it.

    For people who don't know, a close friend of Destiny killed himself when he was 19. This is something he's mentioned on his stream before; the suicide questions aren't necessarily coming from Reckful's death, on Destiny's end.

    • @SDot-tt8yf
      @SDot-tt8yf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +500

      You should add that it was Destiny's best friend/the person that got him into streaming, and that the friend approached him with the question of suicide/whether he should go through with it, and Destiny essentially went "it's your body, your life, do whatever you want bro," and then his friend killed himself on the train tracks the next day and so Destiny has wrestled with this ethical dilemma ever since, even though he was not drastically devastated by his friends death.
      Destiny's friend was going to be in trouble over dealing weed essentially, and thought that his life was over for that amongst other things and so he chose suicide as the route to go, but Destiny now believes that his friend was being far too fatalistic/narrow in his thought process and could have thrived in the future, especially in this digital landscape that Destiny has made his living in.
      He's always been fairly open about it, surprised he didn't just tell the story on this stream.
      It isn't very long.
      Also in the past he's said he now hedges on intervention in such cases, even if it isn't a strong stance, just more of a it's "probably" the best course.

      @@SDot-tt8yf after all you said I'm not surprised at all he didnt directly bring it up.
      I'm pretty sure his intention with this stream was to ask Dr.K questions rather as a 1-1 conversation rather than a interview. Nor did he want to be interviewed.
      So him not bringing it up seems intentional. He was not trying to be in the spotlight with this stream. He was making Dr. K the focal point cause of the knowledge he has.
      Instead of giving Dr. K something that would distract or make him want to focus more on destiny. Which led them in the direction they took the rest of the stream.
      Edit: I also get the feeling that Destiny took this approach to help better his view on the subject.

      @@Skizzeckz Yah, I figured that after the fact.

    I think when Destiny asked Dr. K what his end goal is with HealthyGamer the best answer is that there is no end-goal because the goal changes based on what the world requires of us. I think that's a beautiful way of looking at things. Your purpose can change based on what is needed at a given time but there will always be something worth fighting for/fixing/trying to help

      @mattwc93 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Kevin Che I don't know that it was dismissive, I am making an assumption here of course but it feels like Dr. K likes to hear the person's view on the question to better respond.

    • @deensama7718
      @deensama7718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattwc93 i think it's a response that can go either way, it can be dismissive or it can be like you said. usually i think he responds that way for the reason you mentioned, but sometimes i think it comes off as dismissive because the person asking the question was actually asking about something with deeper implications
      for example, i think destiny was asking more than what Dr. K answered, because his implication with the question was what's an appropriate response if you lack the information to help in the way they discussed OR you're not particularly close/intimate with that person. just to be clear: the answer that destiny provided seemed very specific and carries a lot of assumptions about the person in need of care; that destiny knows them, is very familiar with them, and has prior knowledge of interventions or 'pushes' to do something usually has positive results. i think destiny's question was actually something more like this: when do you know when they need help and how do you judge when it's appropriate to try and help them in a friendly capacity given the unknown quantities (such as not having prior knowledge of intervention being successful)
      i can take a guess as to what Dr. K would have answered had Destiny reframed the question in the way he wanted to ask, but we don't really know unless someone asks him
      i feel like a few of these types of questions popped up and were basically dismissed due to Destiny not wanting to take up too much time or get too deep into it, which is a shame because it could've been useful. i get that there was some time restraints though and there were obviously some questions where they did really dive deep so it's not that big an issue

    • @deensama7718
      @deensama7718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      also just to be clear i don't think the dismissal was anyones fault, i'm not applying a value judgement, i just think it's more like Dr. K can't read minds and so may have missed the deeper implications (or just didn't want to assume there were deeper implications, which is fair enough) and Destiny didn't feel it was important enough to continue press the issue for any reason, be it time restraints or just not being super invested in the question

    As someone who has struggled with depression and is a big voluntary loner I can attest to when friends stop asking if I want to hang out did hurt. My childhood best friend from time to time would just show up at my appartment in his car with a bucket of KFC and would demand I sit in the car and would drive me out to the airport to watch plains and eat and it was immensely helpful to my mental state. If he just called and asked if I wanted to go I would have said no 80% of the time and just stayed inside and play so him just showing up and applying a little pressure forced me to get out of my head and do something.

    • @megeles

      That's the kind of thing that could come off as a boundary violation to a lot of people. When you reject people (and saying no to plans over and over is a type of rejection) they will eventually get the message that you don't like them. Have you tried making plans with the people who used to call you? Have you tried putting effort into your relationships?

Much of what you talk about in regards to Karma and Dharma seem to have some interesting overlap with Sartre's idea of "The Situation" that he pairs with the idea of a human being's freedom. Really appreciate these more spiritual/philosophical based conversations. Would love to see you try to compare/contrast Western philosophical ideas with your idea of Karma/Dharma/Etc.

    1:19:34 and the few minutes afterwards is probably my favorite section.
    Actually maybe the entire stream after that point is my favorite.
    I have no idea how I work. I've been in therapy a couple of times for years at a time, and neither time did I really get around to figuring out how I work. It was mostly about trying to treat certain issues in my life at the time. Figuring out me more would be good.
    I kinda feel like the study about mdma and psilocybin could be tied to the convo around ego and EQ. Maybe it's just because I'm tired, but the idea of hallucinating some being in that way, feels a lot like people are peering into their own psyche a bit. I imagine there's potential for great relief in finding some sense of understanding about your emotions and it seems like it wouldn't be unreasonable for people to characterize their emotions or ego in some way while on drugs.

    I think it may be helpful if Dr K distinguished between his understanding of karma, and what is generally understood about karma. It's like saying "that's because of a previous life" but actually meaning "that's because of things that happened before you were born".
    Using "a previous life" or "karma" as explanations, comes with the weight of the generally understanding of those words, which doesn't seem to be what Dr K. Actually means, and that meant that they were talking past each other a little bit.
    It would be like me saying "yeah, I believe in an afterlife" but actually meaning "my actions will influence the world once I'm gone". That's not the generally understanding of an afterlife, so that language would cause more confusion than clarity.

    I guess I've been an addict of both opiates and videogames. I've been clean for 2.5 years after a few years heavily addicted to fent, and my video game addiction was years before that, playing games online 5-10hrs a day for multiple years. I don't really know where that would put me on any addiction spectrum, and at the time I never really thought of it like an addiction, but after going through my opiate addiction and listening to the psychology behind video game addiction I can see the parallels, especially when I neglected so much in my life while for gaming.
    Although, in my experience, opiate addiction is a lot more physical in nature. Sure, the psychological attachment is what keeps you doing the drugs, but eventually your body doesn't function properly without it. It feels important to make that distinction, because the road to recovery from each problem is going to be very different.
    All the best to anyone out there struggling with either problem. Change starts in small steps, then it's one foot in front of the other.

    For that conversation at the end about psychedelic experiences having a high reporting rate of an experience with a higher being - the non-drug-induced psychotic break from reality I had a few years ago, I felt the presence of beings that I thought wanted to communicate with me. I remember specifically at one point feeling like... whatever they were "telling" me, I was responding with "variety is the spice of life" like that was the answer and I was heating something up in the microwave and it dinged, and I perceived that as like "ah! light bulb moment! I understand what you mean."
    I also felt like there was this interconnected system of beings throughout the world that could connect with each other and were like telepathically linked, and I kinda felt like, in that state, I was one of them.
    Wild shit.
    There was also a wide array of other shit I was thinking and ended up needing to be hospitalized for it, but it was an extremely fascinating experience, and I'm really glad I was able to have it, even though at the time, there was a lot that terrified me at the time and I scared my family.
    Anyways, I thought it might be something worth noting; idk if the beings people felt connected to while on psychedelics might be strictly linked to drugs... idk if my non-drug-induced experience was similar to what they experienced..... I'm curious about that, though.
