  • Hazel Findlay is not just one of the best and boldest female trad climbers around, she's one of the best regardless of gender. But, what makes Hazel truly special is her down-to-earth personality, which shines through in this video. Join Cedar Wright as he follows Hazel up two of her hardest sends in Yosemite Valley; 'The Book of Hate' (5.13+) and the second ascent of 'The Pre-Muir' (5.13+) on El Capitan. Beyond the climbing, Cedar also gives us a look into what makes Hazel tick: what it's like to be a female in a predominately male sport, what it's like to make your living from climbing, what motivates Hazel as a climber, and what it's like to have your pick of the boys.

LMAO she is the actual cutest thing I've ever seen. I like how she doesn't take herself too seriously.

Everyone fails, they fail over and over again, till they learn the correct way to do something. That's where experience comes from. A Master climber is someone who has failed, or has seen failure by others, in just about every single way, and learned from the experience.

I wish I could take her advice more easily. I took a climbing course right before deciding to remodel a house and move, which consumed like a year and a half right before covid BS started (a busy time for a healthcare worker). Im trying to find climbing partners now to get back out there and really finally get in to climbing and mountaineering, but Im afraid to be 'that guy' that just drags down an otherwise fun day with his newness.
It sucks to live in your own head but its so hard not to.

jeffries848 I know darn well what the difference is. Please read the whole set of comments before concluding that somebody is an idiot. When Ms. Findlay refers to "soloing" something I think we both know what she's talking about. She sure was doing a lot of standard free climbing in the piece (and not soloing), but do please pay attention to the context of the conversation before concluding I wasn't paying attention to the video.

All this talk about the difference about men and women and the difference between male and female climbers ... and being up on El Cap ... and yet not one single mention of Lynn Hill doing he first *free* ascent of The Nose back in 1993? It would take five years before the next person was able to repeat the route. Lynn also did the route in under 24 hours and I took TEN YEARS before anyone (male or female) could repeat this accomplishment. Lynn's climb of the The Nose Free was so ahead of it's time, she didn't rate the crux pitch (the Changing Corners) as hard as they really are -- which I think people now rate 5.14a/b. It is still a route that is very rarely repeated and it proved that women climbers (at least Lynn anyway) could climb just as hard if not harder than men.
Also a little disappointed that they don't talk about the history of the particular route they are climbing (Book of Hate). Book of Hate was one of Randy Leavitt's many futuristic climbs ... he did a particular number of big corner climbs like this (thus the route names "Book of Hate, Book of this, Book of that ..." and the route requires state-of-the-art smearing and balance moves. This was possibly Randy's grandest achievement ... 5.13d smearing. Maybe it's just me, but I do like to hear a bit about a route's history and the first ascent.
