    love the learner’s mindset - so hard to challenge yourself to detach from success/failure but Hazel really shows how valuable it can be to think of improvement as a goal, rather than any one boulder.

    Really cheering for you at the 20 min mark where you went try hard -- congrats. Letting go is rarely about running out of energy/grip, happy to see you winning that battle, great effort.

    I love how ya'll are really addressing a struggle that doesn't get enough attention and provide great logic/exercises on how to work on the mental game. Outside of climbing, I'm also a gamer (and do e-sports casting), and this comes up there too, if you lose your mental game you start performing poorly so being able to "keep up your mental" is super important.

    This is great! I would normally expect a video about trying your hardest and maximizing effort on the wall taking a super energetic, kind of macho tone. This was completely the opposite, just a nice calm and relaxed discussion but still encouraging some really intense and intentional effort.

    Lovely video! Hazel is an amazing mental coach 🥰
    About the fact that most people do not care how hard you climb: mostly true! However, there are times at which people do care about what you do (and I think this is a lot the case with professional climbers as much as with youtubers). This is because we are social animals and for us belonging is important. If this is the case, there are two options: you can try to surround yourself with people that embrace your values or, if not possible, you accept that people will think what they think and give greater value to the people's opinion you care the most about. It can be painful. It can take time. But it is worth it since it will help you stop avoiding things just for fear of judgment.
    And how do we do that? MORE FEET FIRST BOULDERS! 🤩🤩🤩Experiment, do stupid stuff, and enjoy with supportive friends 🥰

    It was really enjoyable to watch just how hard you tried and improved in this episode. When you said about laughing it off when you weren't as successful as you would have liked in previous climbs in the past, it really was interesting. Somehow seeing your defeats (and non laughing it off thinking what we might think) but desire to keeping trying hard and having fun in this video were so much more interesting to watch than your other videos, to me. You could see you were really in the zone more, which was lovely! Well done! (A complete non-climber here, but loves watching and being inspired by people like yourself!)

    As a viewer, I'm also not that interested in seeing which particular boulders you send or not. What I enjoy seeing the most is you challenging yourself and learning new things! I think this video really showcased you moving out of your comfort zone and it was great to see. I just got back from holiday and then was ill for my first week back home. I still don't feel 100% and have been scared to go climbing, because I don't want to feel like a failure. This video was really good for me to go "who cares if I'm not at my A game? I'm gonna ease into it and have fun!"

    You looked kinda like a whole different climber by the end of this video! Crazy that it's really just "try harder" but I think the whole giving yourself a score from 1-10 on how hard you tried, then trying +1 or +2 harder is a great mentality tool.

    It’s always cool to see this episodes with good coaches and nice tips, but it’s kind of exhausting that “self doubt” is the brand of this channel. I feel like it’s years of learning the lesson of trying hard and believing yourself every episode only to deer eye “self doubt” the next. No psyche at all, no joy.

    • @hannahmorrisbouldering
      @hannahmorrisbouldering  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There’s a whole bunch of joy and psyche, just maybe I express it in a different way to you’re used to. What I would say is that every episode with a coach or a pro climber sets up a session dynamic where I’m the one learning from someone who is objectively more skilled and talented at climbing. I’m not there to push self-deprecation as a brand, but there’s very little ego surrounding ability going on. Plus, I’m British - it’s kind of our way 😅
      I do have self doubt around climbing sometimes, and sure it comes through in videos. Being about self perception and mental approach, this video it’s especially relevant to touch on self doubt. I am having fun regardless.

    I was hyping for the webinar but it is a whole setup to sell the course. The "free" stuff she talked about the whole time are locked away behind a 200$ paywall and it is crazy how she used a mindset webinar to make people hyped about a pdf page then crush their imaginations and respect for climbing with a paywall...

    LOVE this episode! I’m a therapist myself and I teach some of these coping skills to my own patients but for some reasons I never thought about utilizing them in my climbing session. A lot of things you discussed in the video resonate with me. For example, feeling embarrassed to try and fail a Boulder when there are a lot of much better climbers around, fall off from a problem and see it as a failure and ruin the rest of my session. I definitely need to practice these coping skills in my future climbing sessions and be more aware of my own intrusive thoughts. Please do more content like this, would love to learn more. I did have one bit of video feedback - I’m not sure if others feel the same. I understand you are tying to maximise content in your videos (conversation and footage of climbing), but in this video particularly I found when hazel was talking over footage of you climbing I actually didn’t even end up hearing a word she said cause I was so focused on watching you climb 😅 not sure if maybe you could do like a split/mini screen for the conversation so maybe it’s easier to absorb both? • @hannahmorrisbouldering
      @hannahmorrisbouldering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I’ve been rating attempts in following sessions to try and see if I’m really trying my absolutely hardest when I reach a sticking point on a boulder. Most of the time, I’m not! Really cool measure to check in with yourself as you climb.

    The mental game is a tough one. I really liked how you gave it 100% !! It was really cool to see you become more confident through the climbs ! My mental state varies a lot. If I feel alone in my corner of the gym or with beginners or friends, I can be very playful. If it's crowded or a bunch of very skilled and powerful climbers are on the wall, I'm having a reaaaally hard time just lifting my butt from the mat. Learning that feeling afraid means I'm thinking "I can't handle it" helps me channel the pride of "of course I can handle it, we've been through so much harder things in life" and push through it sometimes. But it's also okay to set myself up for easy success sometimes and just go when there are less people 😂

    Truly enjoyed this Hannah and Hazel, thank you. My husband and I are 69, started at 64 (top rope) we did not know climbing was an option for us, we love it. We go twice a week. Our grades are 5.7 to easy 5.9 (UK MVS 4b to HVS 4c)
    The mental game is "on" my mind as strength is limited and some fear of injury. Technique and mental aspects are more important, so I really appreciate the mental tips, re-framing goals, less weight on outcomes vs learning/fun, being mindful, super helpful!
    Problem solving in the moment, I see now, a great reminder. Before a route, I always "think" of all sorts of good stuff I'm learning, techniques, footwork, breathing, etc. but more often than not, once on the wall they fly away, I'm rushing! and therefore not thinking of creative moves to move up the wall at the cruxes.
    Hannah you are correct re newer climbers being intimidated, everyone is more skilled & stronger, use to it by now, but I like Hazel saying a playground and it is, and our climbing journey "is" as valuable as anyone, well said, and retained.
    We tried introducing friends but they are too scared so, we motivate each other. We sometime "cheat' on beyond-our-level routes with easy routes running beside, we can try more challenging holds, footwork and tactics.
    I love your channel Hannah, informative, motivating, down to earth, friendly with great guests and friends.

    I've always admired Hazel's climbing and her mind strength. Fear definitely holds me back as much as strength, so it's good to think about training for it too.

    I was there a few weeks back at matchworks trying the same problems. Its really interesting to see a professional try the same routes and how they read it. The mental game is a big one, it often helps me to do the moves I’m struggling with using different grade holds just to build trust on new style of holds and then piece the route together

      That’s a really effective technique I think. I often add and take away holds as I need them or as is helpful to figuring out the boulder as a whole and find it really useful. ☺️

    Thank you for the amazing video Hannah! 🙏🤩 I loved hearing Hazel's mindset and this was the positive approach to try hard that I needed to hear! I'm a perfectionist and an overachiever so my success/failure mindset tends to suck the fun out of climbing. I'm sure that with Hazel's tips I'll be able to enjoy my climbing sessions in a new way.
    In addition, wanted to say that I love your videos and have been a fan of your channel for quite a while. Your content is informative, relatable and helps make climbing a better and safer space ❤🥰

    "...manage y energy levels a little bit..." Great statement. I'm working on a hard project and I've started realizing that I need to find rest spots and take advantage of them on longer climbs. Terrific thought, Hannah.

    Hey, really glad to see you working on your mindset game! It lets your strength and technic shine!
    I loved the tip of grading your effort from 1 to 10, and also it being ok not to give a 10 at a first go. I'll try to use it more often!

    Had my first session back in a month, pinched nerve in my shoulder took me out, stayed super low in the grades after talking to a pro about it and I'm really glad I listened; I went home feeling much better than expected with almost zero pain and still fully enjoyed my session. I say this to emphasize how grateful I am for all of your content, affording your entire audience the perspectives of so many experienced professionals is an amazing service to every climber that finds your channel. Thank you!

      Really great to hear your shoulder is doing better, injury is so frustrating! It’s always really rough coming back to it because you just want to jump straight back in where you left off, but hopefully easing in will pay off! Thanks so much for the kind words too - really do appreciate it 🥰☺️
