  • We explore Fort Canby, a U.S. Army fort built in 1863, located at the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington State.
On this episode of Searching for History, we delve further into Pacific Northwest history by traveling to Fort Canby. Fort Canby is one of three forts that made up the harbor defenses that were built to protect the mouth of the Columbia River. Fort Canby, in Washington State, was first built in 1863/64. Situated at Cape Disappointment, in Cape Disappointment State Park, just south of Ilwaco, this is the most northerly and westerly of the three forts. In this video we visit Fort Canby’s battery Harvey Allen and then hike over to the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, once the site of a Civil War era artillery battery. This is the first of a three-episode series about the Columbia River harbor defenses. We begin with Fort Canby and then in the following episodes, we visit Fort Columbia and then Fort Stevens. Join us as we visit and hike Fort Canby.

This was a fun video. We were there about 6 years. Very informative. A black bear ran down the road in front of us too on that trip.

Do they allow access after dark? A shot of the milky way from the north over the light would be awesome!

It is inside Cape Disappointment State Park, which has a campground that is northwest of the lighthouse. The problem would be finding a clear night. A lot of the time the coast here is socked in with fog and or marine layer. August would probably be the best chance for the right conditions.

@@searchingforhistory Ah I forget that the PNW has wrong kind of weather for my thing.... Who knows, maybe when I make it that way I'll get lucky. Lots of buck list shots up there lol.

@deimosastro East of the Cascade Mountains, the arid part, cloudless skies are common.
