The industry-standard, that sets absolutely no standards. They've done nothing to make the MIDI Editor better. I've been waiting for 15 years, for a piano roll for drums and editor, where I can name each key what I want, like Cubase does. I still use Perpetual PT, but 2021.6 was the last version I'll ever use. When the day comes to upgrade my hardware, I'll be moving on to something else.

Reason DAW is dope and there devices look and function great. You can do audio pitch correction in the piano roll and they have many ways to program drums in devices and piano roll. I can make any type of beat with just the stick sounds. The only big problem with Reason is that it doesn't support VST3.

BUT, I found Studio One was close enough + it has a bunch of other features, workflows, instruments that also put it on par with Logic Pro X/Cubase etc. Once you try doing anything else in PT aside from audio editing, it's quite outdated.

I left Pro Tools when they took away the upgrade path from Pro Tools 8 in a "press release" that they buried in a newsletter about something completely unrelated, mid way through Pro Tools 11's life when I had no reason to expect it. Literally bought the upgrade two weeks after my eligibility had been quietly taken away, and support's response to me, an intern at the time, was to rebuy Pro Tools for $899. What a rancid company.

The fact that Pro Tools, which has been entrenched in the industry for decades now, is about 10 years behind Steinberg in terms of features and functionality is a disgrace considering the cost. Avid are trading on a legacy, and short changing their customers in the process. I reluctantly went from PT12 BACK to Steinberg after many years. No platform is perfect, but honestly...you're only implementing custom Key Commands after 33 years, and calling it a selling point? And forcing HDX users, which is MOST studios, into the higher price bracket?

I really hope avid reads all these comments, I was thinking about switching to pro tools since I’ve been doing more professional work. But after reading the comments here I’m just gonna stick with ableton and studio one, pro tools just costs way too much money for what is offered. The only reason I would buy pro tools is because everyone else uses it and says it has the best audio quality. But like, if I listen to songs that were mixed in other DAW’s I can’t tell the difference. The industry needs to grow up and let everyone just use the DAW’s they want. Got a bit of topic lol, but thanks comments :)

Mitch is as good as they get when it comes to describing music gear and software but even he can't make Protools sound good anymore. I understand you guys have to push the new PT format because it's just business. But Avid can kiss my tush after what they've done to the perpetual license owners. They won't go M1 native because it will make their carbon and DSP products obsolete. So the good news is that if you were current as of today...you can let it lapse and still get the best version you're ever gonna get. And plus, Mitch...we all know you use Studio One...because you're not a sucker. I refuse to pay even more now for an inferior DAW. Reaper and Studio One have topped the mountain. This is just Avid trying to scrape up any money they can before they lose stock value. WE ARE TIRED OF KEEPING AVID ALIVE....today they spit in our faces once again. And it's the last time for me.

Its just they aren't offering Perpetual plans to anyone who doesn't already own a perpetual plan.
With that being said...AVID has really dropped the ball...and I see no reason to upgrade to the 2022.4 since I already use AKAI for drum grooves...and I have lots of Synths...so I don't need whatever basic synth that is. Also...I already know the shortcuts I need to know for my workflow...so having the ability to change that...just doesn't make sense. Yeah, but once you update...you will lose your perpetual license and forever be a slave to the subscription model. A few years ago I was given a free year of subscription as part of the loyalty rewards. Almost 20 years of loyalty. About a week after I took it I realized they took my perpetual away and had to fight to get my license back and give them their garbage sub package back. They tried to pull a fast one on me and I caught them. Read the fine print...you will lose your perpetual.

@@weschilton It's not ending for current customers that already own the perpetual license - it's only ending for new customers who don't already have a perpetual license. I've had a license for years and so I don't count. You're right about new customers though.

@SomebodyPickaName - I stand corrected and owe you an apology. You are correct. After spending a bit of the afternoon trying to find out what happens to my perpetual, it does appear that you'll be able to keep it. They literally took away the version I had and replaced it with Studio. So at least till the end of the year I'm covered. But curious as to if after the 1st year they bump the price up to 300 for the perpetual. Kind of like how they upped the fee from 100 to 200 after the sub service was introduced. We'll see....but yes, you were absolutely right.

I often think about the “industry standard” comments every time PT gets talked about. But imagine…if you will…someone who knows nothing about the industry, you spend some time showcasing all the daws, and they have to try to guess the industry standard DAW as of today.
My current opinion is there can’t be any good argument for PT as industry standard anymore. I will give credit to it as the foundation which most other daws built upon.
I am currently using Studio One and Love it.

I don't understand the whole track category thing. "Audio track", "Instrument track", "aux track" thing. I've been using Reaper for nearly 10 years now. In Reaper a track is just a track....you just command or control T your new track first and then you can do whatever you want to/with it once it's in your project. Set it mono/stereo/surround, you can set it to send and receive infinite tracks/destinations, and you can put audio, video, MIDI, photos, GIFs all on one track with several different instruments loaded on it if you want, all running at once. The last of which is great for blending sounds together without creating separate tracks for each individual sound element, like a piano with electric keys for example. The more I watch videos of other DAWs, the more I realize how lucky I've been to have avoided this whole landlocked track type system that seems to continuously dominate the DAW industry.
