Dave has said that he sung this as if he was singing a lullaby to his baby daughter. It's a beautiful song that has brought me so much comfort. I'm so glad you liked it too!

I feel like your reaction to this album is going to make those of us who were a bit meh about exciter appreciate it more fully.
Now you're definitely going to want to watch one night in Paris. Martin really comes into his own as a performer.

Exciter is when I realized DM had graduated. They were no longer at all pop.
They had artistic freedom. Sure, I wish Alan could have been there with them. It wasn't meant to be.
Depeche Mode is the story of Martin's song writing and Dave's vocals. Everything in between is just gravy.

You are approaching this moment to hear it live!!!! Excited! No pun intended.

I love the tender, vulnerable way Dave interprets this song. He sounds fantastic, and I was pretty impressed with his hitting those high notes. And yes, they played this live. This song was beautifully played at that One Night In Paris concert that was referenced earlier. 2001 was Martin's peak sexy-ness: teeth fixed, handsome face, hot body, fabulous hair, and his voice was absolutely gorgeous!

Excellent reaction Seph! I'm glad to hear someone listen to these albums with an open and honest mind. You're just sitting back enjoying the ride without unfair comparisons to the "Wilder" era. As someone who has listened to DM off and on most of my life and has been influenced by their music, I find it's easier to listen to post Alan DM albums with no expectations. Then we can truly listen with an open mind. I have found gems from ALL of their albums with that viewpoint. There are songs that speak to the heart on every album they ever made. As an overall album I think Exciter is one of there best post Alan works.

SEPH!!! WoW ... Yeah! This is ... Definitely ... Gorgeous... Beautiful... Ethereal! The Lyrics, the music and the singing. THIS IS a Diamond! I PROMISE Seph that YES, You WILL hear this live! It does sound Even Better Live (It's Possible)!! Dave, and Martin especially are in rare, magnificent form for this! Now, you definitely NEED to react to **ONE NIGHT IN PARIS** from October 2001. Stunning stuff man!
❤In Love with your reaction. 💜 I love that you LOVE the song which makes me love this song even more! As you can see, there are definitely glittering gems ahead for your aural pleasure my friend. There are a lot of precious jewels on All ahead, again, don't pay attention to the nay-sayers. So EXCITED for you that We're sharing this wonderful DM journey with you!! It's making me remember WHY I fell in love with them in the first place and LOVE them even more than I thought i could already!! Cheers friend!!!!

I find it's easier to listen to previous DM albums with no expectations. Then we can truly listen with an open mind. I have found gems from all of their albums with that viewpoint. I'm glad to hear someone find they under rated DM work and are "rediscovering" it! There are truly deep songs on every album they ever made. I think Exciter is one of there best post Alan works.

I've been smitten with DM since 1982. First we were told they would be a flash in the pan.
Then, as if predicted by the music gods, sure enough their lead song writer and musician says, "F this, I'm out."
Martin and Dave regrouped. They managed to put out an album on the cuff, and then up the anti and sign the legendary Alan Wilder.
People forget. At that moment, DM could have brought in anybody. Anyone.
They chose Alan Wilder. They knew he was gifted.
Better yet, Alan and Dave became absolute best mates.
It wasn't until the drugs. The drugs and the alcohol.
But they survived. Everym album. Every song they put out after Songs of Faith & Devotion is bonus.
Their Redemption Arch is half their story.

Such a tender and sad track... Seph you´re an angel as the same as Martin ;-)
When Exciter was released I was 23 and I didn´t like this track so much...
But as I go through life and became father of kids you´ve soften yourself, listen to your heart and soul and suddenly you realised, that your favourite songwriter wrote song about you 😀

The R.E.M. song you might be thinking of is "Everybody Hurts". It has a similar slow tempo with a delicately picked clean guitar, and an introspective, emotive vocal.
"Oh, I need your tenderness... oh, I need your touch... oh, I dream of one caress..."

This was my brother's favorite from this album. I love the strings and Martin's guitar. To my mind this is the first time the guitar was continuous throughout the whole song. Excitor is one last albums I love as a whole, and one of the reasons was the variety between songs. I call this their California chill LP. A lot of fans don't like it.

  • @FredrikAndersson597
    @FredrikAndersson597 ปีที่แล้ว

I thought I liked this song at first when the record came out. But with a little time and perspective, it didn't hold up, for me. After the time of the album's release, I basically never played it.
Hearing it again now many years later maybe gives it a little boost, but I still think it's tough, uneventful and quite ordinary for its melody.
This is thus not a Depeche mode booster for me - even though I belong to those who most appreciate Depeche mode's dark/depressing songs.

Yeah, that's clearly the best song from the DM album I liked the least. In fact, 20 years on, I only (occasionally) listen to this song and to "Freelove". "Goodnight Lovers" and "Comatose" are okay, but the rest of the tracks are pretty much skips for me.
