This is the remarkable story of the two most powerful women in Britain in the 1980s. For over a decade they quietly waged a war against each other on both a personal and political stage. The Crown Season 4 showed us how they disagreed on sanctions against South Africa.

She fought harder for South Africans than she ever fought for her own people. Probably because it was so fashionable at the time.
I have been a monarchists all my life but the royal family behaves like woke idiots I am willing to consider abolishing the whole damn thing, and put in place a monarchy without a monarch!!
Here is the explanation for all of this. . The Queen may NEVER oppose her PM is issues of governing. What she can do is in private, confidential audiences encourage or warm the PM --- if asked- on what she feels is appropriate. She may be able to refuse a request for early elections by the PM if she feels that a new government can be formed -- and if a vote of no confidence has not be held (The Lascelles Principles). The rub is this -- If The Queen (or any Monarch) is outside of the UK, and in another Commonwealth Realm (say The Bahamas) where she is also Head of State, she can act on the advice of the PM of that realm (in theory). As Head of the Commonwealth, the Queen (and King Charles) are also acting in support of all Commonwealth memebers -- but actually opposing her PM in the UK in any event will result in a severed Constituional Crisis.

Thatcher was right. Many Black South Africans opposed sanctions, as did many African-Americans. (I never count the big mouthed and out of touch politicians). In the end, governments are rarely hurt by sanctions, only the people that are supposedly being "protected".

The reality: Both Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were out of touch with public opinion with respect to South African apartheid. The Queen had to push back against Thatcher's opposition to sanctions; Congress had to override a Reagan veto of sanctions. Even Newt Gingrich disagreed with Reagan on this issue.
But in the end Thatcher and Reagan were right. Look at South Africa today.

@@Frank-pc2rs-- Well let's see: a peaceful transition to a colorblind society in South Africa with majority rule and no cataclysmic bloodshed; 30 years of free elections and transfers of power (even the USA can't claim that anymore), and still the most vibrant economy on the African continent.

She's very young at those times. It'll take years to gain political knowledge and confidence to act morally.

There was no "war". QE2 signed whatever paper was shoved in front of her face, the end. This show started off well but they dramatized it more and more as each season went on.
It’s insane that they just invented a war between the queen and the prime minister. In real life they really liked each other, the queen bestowed a lot of honors on her and went to her birthdays, gave her a state funeral.
I really liked the crown prior to this, some historical inaccuracy or dramatization is necessary in shows, but this was just too much: blatant lying for political purposes.
Actually this is loosely based on some factual historical references like the palace did leak queen elizabeth displeasure with thatcher
This is the reason why I have been skeptical of the programs that are featured on Netflix.
They didnt invent the war, it actually did happen. The rift that formed is infamous, why not do actual research instead of claimimg the truth is a lie. Their spat, however, did not ruin their relationship in the show or in real life.
I thought it's widely known that they had a rift n Queen even thought she was over stepping on Queens domain. And during the war n after consequent victory celebration Margaret tried to take a leading role n alot of credit making Queen look second to her....but in the end both of them really admired each other n it is showed in the series as well

I’m wondering if you understand how much money that royal yacht and those castles bring back to the UK. The average Briton pays roughly £2 less in taxes because of the monarchy than it would if the monarchy didn’t exist, largely because of tourism and the money the British government makes from the Crown lands.
