@@ddandymannAlso, Wilson kept the United Kingdom out of the Vietnam War, that's a big accomplish having in consideration the bail out the U.S offer for direct involvement
Gillian Anderson really got Thatcher's mannerisms down cold, she seemed like the real deal. You couldn't help but pity her after her disastrous visit to Balmoral.
She was trying so hard for the voice , that she made Thatcher into a caricature. Worse , she slowed her voice down Unnaturally. Steve Nallon from Spitting Image would have done better
Anderson's performance as Thatcher was actually really bad. Really bad. Which is odd because I think she must be a good actress. But the voice, the mannerism, the gestures... she portrayed it as she probably would have been like a few months before she passed away lol. It felt like a deliberate, over the top caricature.
@frname7665 I agree in terms of her being portrayed as more of an older Thatcher, although I've always though Gillian Anderson is an incredibly talented and versatile actor and she still did an excellent job. It may be that she was specifically asked to portray her in that manner throughout. I do think she was more energetic in the early episodes and portrayed a more worn-down Thatcher in the final episode.
@@davidostrowski679 Clearly if the character wasn't Thatcher I would have thought her performance remarkable. She is clearly skilled. But yeah the portrayal was absolutely off.
In present day. From Winston Churchill to Liz Truss. When Elizabeth II became Queen her first Prime Minister is male. When Charles III became King his first Prime Minister is female.
What let me down mostly the last two seasons is the lack of focus on the Crown itself and proper portrayal of the PMs. Early seasons let them have their own episodes and the final season barely let them on screen.
I agree...I think the Crown was at its best depicting the political issues of each generation and the various issues facing Elizabeth during her long years of rule...but all that took a backseat once they reached the Diana part of the story haha :l
Exactly, the thing I loved about The Crown was it's portrayal of British politics. Season 2- Season 4 were splendid. I think that is what made the show interesting and added depth and complexity to it- the portrayal of the monarchy in the larger backdrop of the country's politics. Season 5 was fine & 6 took a huge backseat, it focussed too much on Diana and young William and Kate's relationship. It didn't maintain the balance between politics and the personal lives of the Royal Family members in the manner that the previous seasons did.
Agreed, I definitely would have wanted to see a better portrayal of John Major, in my opinion, he's a rather overlooked Prime Minister rather than a good or bad one, given his place between Thatcher and Blair, and that may contribute to his lack of own screen time on the Crown. Edit - Though then again, for the parts he was in, such as his conservation with Charles about "Queen Victoria Syndrome" he said were very inaccurate.
@@theoutsider8745 This is pretty accurate. See that's the remarkable thing about the 90's, in the West. No one cared. Diana really was the issue. It's truly amazing how care-free everything between '89-'01 really was....before Iraq, The Recession, etc.
S3 is my favorite season by far. It has the best PM and Aberfan the best episode of them all. Plus Wilson singing the raunchy limerick to the queen might be my favorite scene
Out of all of them in the series, Wilson was my favorite. He was the first Prime Minister to not talk down to her, and was able to sympathize with her-despite him being a socialist from a middle class background. IRL she was one of the few prime ministers she personally went to Downing Street with to dine with.
Ik he gets no love in real life and on the crown but I really like the one scene with Edward Heath speaking to the guy who wants to miners on strike to be heard. Heath’s speech about his back ground is great
That's alright, James Callahan didn't even make it on the show and the Earl of Home was only on it in while in his role as foreign secretary. Although in fairness both their times as PM were quite small.
My favourite (in the show) was Harold Wilson, I don't know if he was a good Prime Minister in real life, but at least the character seemed clever, cautious and almost wise
his only big mistakes were: - Sending the paras into Ireland (though in fairness I doubt he knew how it would turn out) - Devaluing the £ (though again he didn't have much choice)
My favorite moments of every Prime Ministers - Winston Churchill (I also like his "prominent Nazis!" line until one of the choirboys shut him up) - Harold Wilson (his delivery of Princess Margaret and LBJ's vulgar limmericks to the Queen) - Margaret Thatcher (her "ibble dibble" scene) - John Major (his face during the "Tampongate" scene like he was in a state of WTF) - Tony Blair (his coronation scene)
Then at end she had Liz truss and a lettuce and the lettuce was more effective ..and HM still Kept her promise right to the end still dignified …the government wouldn’t know efficient if it ran itself over

Australia could've done well without the royals quite frankly. Don't forget the British Empire used Australia as a prison island sending desperate poor people (convicts) that stole loaves of bread to try to survive because the monarchy had all the wealth. Not to mention they attempted genocide of the original Australians.
How u.g.l.y. the queen has treated Tony Blair. She was happy when he was humiliated. Why it is so hard for her to congratulate others and be happy for them? At 80 years old we'd expect any person to let down their ego just a bit
She was a queen. She thought she was more important than anyone and should be the favourite of the british people. Because that's how monarchs feel: superior, unaware that they are only humans like us, made of flesh, bone and blood and that will die slow and painfully in a hospital bed. But until that moment reaches they want to feel like demi gods, or protagonist of a fairy tale.
This is fictionalized. There is no record of how she really felt about any of her prime ministers (at least spoken words). You certainly can infer things based on things that occurred. For example, she attended both Churchill's and Thatcher's funerals. That would seem to indicate she at least had respect for them.
In 1940 (from May 10, at least), PM and junior coalition party leaders all opposed a genocidal power. What does the sovereign do both PM *and* HM opposition leader support a genocidal regime?
