    • @SmartHomeJunkie

      No, it works without Hub using your phone or Home Assistant. You only need the Hub of you want to use it with Google Home and such. I explain this in the video 🤷🏼

  • @davidhill8151
    @davidhill8151 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. I assume the Home Assistant with the Bluetooth dongle needs to be within Bluetooth signal range of the blind. Is that correct? My HA unit is on the opposite side of the house from where my office window is located.

    • @SmartHomeJunkie

      Yes, correct. You can also use Bluetooth proxies to extend the range.

    • @SmartHomeJunkie

      Bluetooth proxy should work as well. Basically you should have some sort of Bluetooth connection to Home Assistant. I use a dongle for that, but as long as Bluetooth signals can be retrieved by Home Assistant, I expect that you should be fine.

    I bought 2 of these about a month ago for my office and they work great. I installed HA on my gaming PC with the intent on transferring it to mini-pc or a raspberry pi (if they ever become available), it's a temporary solution to learn how HA works and cost saving for now. My HA instance is done via Oracle VM Virtual Box, but the virtual box refuses to see the bluetooth adapter that came native with my motherboard. So I have not been able to get these working with HA. Any suggestions to get HA/Virtual Box to utilize bluetooth that is already available, because I haven't found any information on it. Or maybe I'm just dumb, /shrug

    • @SmartHomeJunkie

    Nice!!! Do we have to use the Switchbot app if we don't have a Switchbot hub or can it all be done from within Home Assistant? Also, what USB dongle is needed?

    • @SmartHomeJunkie

      You need the app to set it up, but you do not need the Hub. See the description for the dongle that works with Home Assistant.

    Great job as always, Ed! Funny timing, because I just finished installing my first blind tilt 12 hours before you released this video! I've got it working great with the native SwitchBot app, but now of course I want to integrate it into Home Assistant.
    I have a large home, so my NUC running HA is a long distance from the blinds. Do you have any recommendation for my situation? I looked at the Bluetooth dongle you linked, but I don't think running a 300 foot USB cable for it would be wise :D
    Eventually I hope to have about 15 of these switchbot blinds throughout my house, all locally controlled by HA with zero cloud dependency.
    Any recommendation is highly appreciated!

    • @FrankyB295

      You can use ESP32 Bluetooth proxies.

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's great to hear! Look into Bluetooth proxies with an esp32. This way you can cover your whole house.

    • @BallsworthBallsbury
      @BallsworthBallsbury ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SmartHomeJunkie thanks for the recommendation. I was hesitant to use ESP32 because I'd never used them or ESP Home. So decided to first try using a Shelly Plug instead, because the HA docs said they were supported as Bluetooth proxies. But I couldn't get the Shelly to do the trick, so I returned the Shelly and finally decided to try ESP32. I should have tried ESP32 to begin with, because it's working like a charm. I struggled a tiny bit to get the right firmware installed on the ESP32, but other than that, it was easy.
      Now I just need to find a case for the ESP32. It's not a very aesthetically pleasing solution having bare ESP32 devices sitting around, something my wife quickly pointed out 😂
      If you know any good ESP32 cases or tricks for hiding them away, I'd love to hear about it!
      Thanks as always my friend, you are a gift to the HA community

      Thanks! Yeah, I prefer Zigbee too, but since we have Bluetooth proxies, Bluetooth is not that bad anymore. But Zigbee is still the faster option at the moment. Switchbot is going to support Matter shortly. I am excited about what it will bring. In the beginning it will only be their Hub.
