glad you've moved on from that job, next one will be better. I'm a landlord and had to fix handrails, i would have drilled in 80mm push in 2 plugs per hole and buy 75mm longer screws. often a 40mm plug is mostly in plaster and the fixing will fail again, best regards

Little tip Darren, get yourself an envelope with a V tab, open up the envelope a little then tape the V of the envelope to the wall underneath of where you want to drill, and all the waste will fall into the envelope, no need for hoovering then, work smarter not harder😜👍 hope it helps, try it next time 👍

Thanks for the tips. If the whole has become really crumbly and it just won't hold regardless of how many shims you put in, is there any substance you can put in there to act like cement? I'm hoping there's something you can buy in a tube, put it in, followed by the plug and then leave it for a while to set? Living in an old victorian terrace, this has happened to me a few times, including with my wall hung headboard which the kids have ripped off on more than one occasion.

Knowing what it's like having older kids in the house. I suggest coach bolts going through to the outside wall. 😂
I’ve used a hot glue gun to fill in holes in crumbly walls for a coat hook and a handrail. Works perfectly and is very secure.

How about the same situation in a hollow wall, again have to use the same size screw because of the fixure.
