I've discovered that any performance led by Ari Rasilainen is worthy of a listen.

Wow! Each time I hear it, that forceful first movement becomes a spellbinder and, from the very first bars, I'm utterly captivated. The mighty Adagio (9:09-22:04) is also enchanting but its mood, vaguely pastoral-cum-mystical and ultimately overpoweringly majestic, charms in a completely different way. A Vivace, mercurially playful and bursting with unrestrained joy, also oozes a kind of charisma that is totally irresistible. Brilliant Symphony that features a great part for horn. Not to be missed! Furthermore, I can guarantee you'll want to go back to the beginning and start all over again.........

The first performance of this in the United States was the NY Philharmonic, conducted by Willem Mengelberg, in 1928. The next year, it got its second performance by the Portland Junior Symphony in Portland, Oregon, conducted by Jacques Gershkovitch. At that time, there was still some lingering of the romantic era, despite Stravinsky and Ives and Schoenberg and Webern and Berg who had changed much of the face of classical music with atonality and dissonance and whatever else. Atterberg is sadly all but forgotten today but he lives on, online mostly. I've never heard any performances of his works in the US; maybe he's played more in other parts of the world.
