1979 Dakar Rally, also known as the 1979 Paris-Dakar Rally was the first running of the Dakar Rally event.

The rally began on 26 December 1978 from Paris, France and finished on 14 January 1979 in Dakar, Senegal, interrupted by a transfer across the Mediterranean. Cyril Neveu won the motorcycle category on a Yamaha, while the car category was won by Alain Génestier in a Range Rover [ wikipedia ]
Of the 182 starters, 74 completed the rally

Yamaha blitzed it before factory specials became the norm .. XT500s 1st & 2nd in 1979 then 1st 2nd 3rd & 4th in 1980.

Вот он, настоящий Дакар! А нынешная хрень! Тогда на минемально подготовленной технике гоняли, а сейчас за каждой машиной целый табор техничек, полк технарей и на каждый этап чуть ли не новая машина! Да и от машин там мало чего остаётся, какие то самоделки! Пусть поганяются, как с конвейра сходят с минемальной подготовкой, вот тогда и выяснится, какая фирма лучше! Уверен доедут пару штук, и то с трудом! А то после каждого этапа новый двигатель, коропки и мосты!
Лакар давно потерял свою первональную зрелешность и превлекательность, какое то шоу с понтами!!!

Ein Stück Motorrad Geschichte 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. Sehr interessant wenn man die Entwicklung der Motorräder über all die Jahre verfolgt hat. Damals war die Enduro-Philosophie die: Alles was an einem Motorrad NICHT verbaut und montiert war, konnte nicht kaputt gehen, konnte nicht verloren gehen, addierte nicht zum Gesamtgewicht und kostete nichts. Das hat sich zum großen Teil sehr geändert. Bei kaum einer modernen und Enduro die ich Heute kenne, könnte man ausser bei einer Reifen- oder Kettenpanne noch etwas selbst reparieren! Es sind Hightech Maschinen die vollgepackt mit Elektronik und Assistenzsystemen sind. Allerdings muss man auch sehen das die Herstellungsqualität, die Fahrwerkskomponenten, die Bremsen, und alle wesentlichen Teile sehr viel besser geworden sind.

Like the conga line who summit Everest every season, the Dakar is now an elitist event ruined by too much money and corporate greed. These guys were adventurers who took it on without trucks full of mechanics and spare parts, state of the art mobile workshops and a massage for the riders at the end of the stage.

Yeah, I agree. But I am watching the Dakar 2018 now and I don't see this type of get out there and do it mentality. I just see good riders and drivers, but so much money behind them that it has killed the adventure.

The only way to ride in Africa is with a crowd.....rode several times down to the Cape of Good Hope and will never forget it. This was back when sex was safe and motorcycles were dangerous....LOL

Todays pampered Poodles that do this have every little risk, Heli's, GPS, Purpose built vehicles, service centres, cakewalk compared to this. None of them would last the first day in these circumstances.

For me, DAKAR no longer has the same flavor.
The real PARIS DAKAR, with real pilots, or almost all of them are amateurs, who do not have a factory assistance which dismantles and reassembles the vehicle every evening.
Now! When you watch a report on TV it only talks about the first 10, the others, the real adventurers, there are not even 30s of images.
(oh yes, when there is a death it's sad isn't it ???)
